Chapter 74: Chapter 64: Completed

"So you’re the two who wanted to see me?"

Fu Shouxin looked at Ren Xiaotian and Chen Chuan. He had heard that a client wanted to see him, so he had his men show them in.

This underground arena was located near the city center, so he had to deal with people from all walks of life. The old gang rules weren’t enough to solve every problem. This was especially true for clients, who were well-connected and had significant influence. He avoided offending them whenever possible. As long as there were no core conflicts of interest, he would usually show them some respect.

Chen Chuan sized the man up. Although he was also a leader of the Blood Mark Gang, Fu Shouxin was completely different from the brutish and crude Fatty Guo.

This was a well-groomed, middle-aged man. His sideburns were neatly trimmed, his face cleanly shaven. He wore a casual, imported suit with a plaid tie and polished black leather shoes, looking every bit the part of a high-society gentleman.

Fu Shouxin invited them to sit and had his men bring them each a glass of wine. Leaning back on the sofa, he gestured with his hand and said, "So, what can I do for you two?"

Ren Xiaotian said, "We want to take An Qingqing with us."

"Oh, that?"

Fu Shouxin said nonchalantly, "If you can convince her to leave on her own, I certainly won’t stop you. We’re very principled about how we do business here."

Ren Xiaotian said, "She refuses to leave. I hope Mr. Fu will make her."

Fu Shouxin let out a dry chuckle. He sat up a little straighter and looked at them. "Let me be blunt. You’re not the first people to come looking for An Qingqing. But she is our guest—a guest who’s here to give us money. Why would we possibly drive away a paying customer? I’d be thrilled if she stayed here forever. Your request..." He leaned back again, spreading one hand. "Is impossible."

Ren Xiaotian then took out his revolver and placed it on the coffee table in front of him. The surrounding security guards and gang members tensed up, some of them reaching for their own weapons.

Fu Shouxin raised a hand, signaling them not to move. His expression was strange, almost amused. "What’s this? A threat? As clients, you should know what kind of place this is. Did you think you could scare me with a single gun? Are you here for my entertainment?"

Ren Xiaotian said in a flat tone, "If you don’t let her go, I’ll walk out that door and fire into the air."

Fu Shouxin hadn’t paid it much mind, but his expression changed abruptly upon hearing that.

Ren Xiaotian continued drily, "Someone will hear the gunshot, call the police, and the Patrol Bureau will come."

"Fuck!"

Fu Shouxin swore, looking at Ren Xiaotian. "You’re serious?"

He knew exactly what the Patrol Bureau was like. Their funding came directly from the state, not the municipal Administrative Affairs Hall. On top of that, they were a tight-knit group, so they wouldn’t give the Blood Mark Gang any face.

When they showed up, they wouldn’t care what had actually happened or who fired the shot. They would definitely use it as an excuse to search for firearms and extort a hefty sum from him, or just shut his place down for a few days. Even if he pulled some strings to get it reopened, it would still cost him a fortune.

The key was that his own operation wasn’t clean. He couldn’t afford an investigation. The losses would be far from trivial.

Chen Chuan now understood Ren Xiaotian’s strategy. Since matters concerning the Patrol Bureau fell within his own area of knowledge, he chimed in at the perfect moment, speaking in a calm tone:

"Mr. Fu, your arena is located on the border of two districts. You might normally use this loophole to evade regulation, but once a shot is fired, the Patrol Bureaus from both districts will be mobilized.

You’re about a ten-minute drive from the Daping District Patrol Bureau, and even closer to the Baofeng District Patrol Bureau—only seven or eight minutes away. They’ll be here within ten minutes, guaranteed. A venue of this size... you won’t have time to clear out, will you, Mr. Fu?

You should understand the Patrol Bureau’s procedures, Mr. Fu. From what I know, Captain Wei of the Bao Feng District is known as Wei Oldhu. He’s famous for his implacable hatred of crime and his daring methods. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see him, would you?"

Fu Shouxin’s expression flickered. He considered detaining the two of them right there. The problem was, for them to dare come see him, they must have had people waiting outside. That would only make the situation bigger and harder to explain away.

People who carried guns around were either desperate fugitives or they had a Weapon Permit. The latter was even more trouble. It meant they were from Wuda, and that came with far too many complications.

He’d never encountered a situation like this before. Usually, those powerful enough to cause him trouble wouldn’t bother, and those who weren’t powerful enough wouldn’t dare to cross the Blood Mark Gang.

He thought for a long moment, then raised his hand and beckoned a subordinate over. With a grim face, he ordered, "Go cancel Room Seven’s booking and send the person out."

The man nodded and left with his men.

Ren Xiaotian picked up the gun from the table, put it away, and stood up. "Mr. Fu, goodbye."

"Let’s hope we don’t meet again," Fu Shouxin said, still sitting. His expression was sour. "You’re not welcome here anymore."

Ren Xiaotian said, "There won’t be a next time."

Fu Shouxin sneered. "I certainly hope so." He barked at his men, "What are you waiting for? Escort our guests out!"

A large group of Blood Mark Gang members immediately surrounded them. As soon as they stood up, the gang members herded them out like they were escorting prisoners.

Neither Ren Xiaotian nor Chen Chuan paid it much mind. They knew it was all for show. After all, the job was done; they had to let the host save a little face.

Once outside, the two of them met up with Lin Xiaoti. Chen Chuan caught a faint scent of algae oil on her, and with a flash of insight, he instantly understood.

An Qingqing hadn’t come out yet, so the three of them waited.

Chen Chuan reflected for a moment. He thought Ren Xiaotian’s tactic of using leverage was incredibly clever. In the end, they hadn’t needed to lift a finger; they had used the Blood Mark Gang to solve the problem for them.

It seemed simple, but it required a good understanding of both Fu Shouxin’s psychology and the Patrol Bureau’s methods. More importantly, you had to have the confidence to pull it off.

He said to Ren Xiaotian, "Senior Brother Ren, I’ve learned something today."

Ren Xiaotian looked at him and said seriously, "Use the rules to fight the rules." After a moment’s thought, he added, "Your own safety is what’s most important."

Chen Chuan couldn’t help but nod.

Lin Xiaoti chirped from the side, "Listening to Master Ren is always the right choice."

After the three of them had been talking for a little while, An Qingqing and her female bodyguard, Xiaozhen, walked out. An Qingqing’s cheeks were puffed out in a pout.

Lin Xiaoti went up to her. "Miss An, we meet again! Time to go with us."

"Was this your doing?" An Qingqing crossed her arms, huffed, and said, "Fine. Beat Xiaozhen, and I’ll go with you."

The muscular female bodyguard had just stepped forward when she saw Ren Xiaotian pull out a gun and aim it at her. She froze instantly, expertly raising her hands. She looked back and said, "Miss..."

An Qingqing looked at the cold-faced Ren Xiaotian holding the gun, then at her bodyguard’s pleading eyes. She muttered something under her breath and said, "No fun. Fine, I’ll go with you. But I’m not riding in your car. Xiaozhen, you drive me back."

’A Weapon Permit really is useful,’ Chen Chuan thought to himself.

Given permission, the bodyguard immediately ran to get the car. A moment later, she drove up in a red Hongfeng sedan. An Qingqing walked straight over, pulled open the door, and got in.

Ren Xiaotian then asked, "Is it done?"

Lin Xiaoti said with a grin, "I checked. I was going to drain a little, but she only has enough algae oil to get home. She can’t go anywhere else."

Hearing this, Ren Xiaotian said no more. He called for Chen Chuan and Lin Xiaoti to get into the SUV. The two vehicles pulled onto the road and headed toward South City.

The trip was uneventful. They escorted An Qingqing all the way back to the residential area where the wealthy An family lived. Ren Xiaotian had Lin Xiaoti make a phone call, and not long after, a man who looked like a butler came out to sign the papers.

Ren Xiaotian then handed a sheet of carbon paper to Chen Chuan. With that, the assignment was officially over. Whether An Qingqing ran off again in the future was no longer their concern.

On the way back to the university, Chen Chuan learned through conversation that Lin Xiaoti was a year younger than him. She had been learning Fighting Skill from her master since childhood and was planning to apply to Wuyi next year. Given her connections and skills, it seemed they would be schoolmates next year.

The car returned to the dormitory entrance. Chen Chuan said goodbye to the other two and, as usual, called Cheng Zitong first. When the call connected, Cheng Zitong heard that the trip had been a success and said to him:

"I’ve checked your file. You had one assignment when you first enrolled, and your evaluation was ’Excellent.’ This one should be fine as well. That means you’ve completed your goal of three assignments. The next step is to master the Force Technique as soon as possible."

Chen Chuan answered steadily, "Teacher, I’ll do it as fast as I can."
