Chapter 261: Chapter 261: The Confederation

"It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. Assassin!" A soldier saluted Crow and reached his hand out.

The other soldiers gasped. They were familiar with the Psychics in the Atlas Seven being super entitled and arrogant. They definitely wouldn’t try to get to know Assassin like that new recruit.

To their surprise, Assassin nodded at the soldier and shook his hand.

"Woah. Assassin is much more friendly than the other Atlas Seven members." A soldier whispered.

Another soldier nudged his arm, telling him to shut up.

The commander of the group walked forward, "I’m the commander of these soldiers, Assassin. Unlike you, they aren’t Psychics. But they will do their best to help you in this mission."

Crow typed something on a digital device on his arm. A mechanical voice replied, "Stay on the outside perimeter. Me and Spots will take care of everything."

The device allowed Assassin to talk with other people that didn’t know sign language.

"Understood!" The commander nodded.

This mission was outside the territory of the Union. Mater and Crow were flying to the Confederation, or more precisely, what was left of it.

Before the Great War, the world was dominated by three great power houses. The Federal Union of Valeria. The United Confederation of Consil. And the Formius Imperial.

The Union survived and became the leader of the current world order. The Imperial was no longer the dominated force it once was but still held great power because of its history and lineage.

As for the Imperial. It was destroyed during the war and many parts of it were corrupted beyond repair.

What was left of it still existed during modern times but the Confederation was only a fraction of what it used to be.

These days, other countries treated the Confederation as a battle field and a resource site. Because of its unstable state, the amount of NCEs and other supernatural forces were several times higher than uncorrupt countries.

This allowed the Union to have a stable source of NCEs and their designated NES.

The Union didn’t do this out of pure greed either. The corruption needed to be kept in check. Otherwise, a second Great War could fall upon them at any moment.

The aircraft stopped at a military base outside of a corrupted town.

The Confederation’s soldiers were already there to greet Mater and Crow.

This mission was a Government Contract exclusively to Psychic Organization. The aircraft and soldiers were provided by the Union. While the Psychics were from the Atlas Seven.

"So this is the Psychic?" The commanding officer of the Confederation said.

Crow typed the device again and let it speak for him, "I am. What’s the issue?"

"A pragmatic man? I like you. I am Colonel Donovan and I am the commanding officer of this temporary base. Come. Let me show you what’s happening." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

The Colonel led Crow and Mater to an outpost overlooking the town from afar.

There were many giant spheres spinning inside the towns. Specters roamed the area freely without any restrictions.

"Our scout reported around 100 NCEs out there. The townsfolk are all dead. A few of them have turned into RCEs so the total enemy count might reach 200. You should watch out." Colonel Donovan said.

"RCEs?" Crow replied with the device.

"Right. Those are rarer supernatural entities so you shouldn’t know about them.

RCE is Reanimate-Corrupted Entity. The usual NCE stems from the soul of a living being. An RCE originates from the entire body and soul. They are, in a sense, resurrected back to life. But not into a human but an ugly and hostile monster."

’RCE? Undead? Not really. Undead is a different kind, totally different from specter. It might just be a different type of specter.’ Mater stroked his long extended leopard’s whiskers.

"What is the process for the RCEs?" Crow replied with the machine.

"Kill on sight." Colonel Donovan said.

"Understood."

"How many men do you need with you?" Colonel Donovan said.

"Just me and Spots will do." Crow patted Mater’s back.

"Alright. If that’s the case, you will need this." Colonel Donovan gave Crow a rectangular device. "Place this machine in front of a Void Gate and it will close it. The enemies won’t let you do it though so you have to be prepared."

The Void Gates, portals leading to the Void, the arch nemesis of the entire world. Each of those giant spinning spheres was a Void Gate.

"Are you sure you don’t need reinforcement?" Colonel Donovan said.

He had worked with many Psychic Organizations in the past. The Atlas Seven contained a few powerful Psychics but they were notoriously incompetent.

"Don’t worry, Colonel. If I die, I exempt you from any responsibility." Crow replied with the machine.

He hopped onto Mater as they rushed out of the military base.

"Heh. I didn’t worry about that." Colonel watched Crow disappearing into the far distance, "Assassin seems different from the rest of the Atlas Seven."

"What is an RCE, Master? Are they a wraith?" Crow said.

"Not sure. We just have to meet one." Mater growled.

They were no longer in view of the military base. Now they could do anything they wanted without the worry of exposing themselves. Mater and Crow kept the Mimicry Mask on however just to make sure.

Soon they saw a resident of the town.

"Ah... I know what they’re referring to. That is a revenant." Mater growled.

A revenant. A corpse returned from the dead. Some could retain their mind and personality. But most of the time, they would turn into mindless hostile creatures just like a wraith.

The resident had red broken lines running on their body. Their eyes had the color of dark orange and their skin was pale.

Crow hopped down from Mater’s back and summoned his Nether Swords. He used two curved swords on each hand.

"Leave it to me, Master!"

Crow turned into a strip of darkness and dashed through the revenant. His swords went through the revenant and cut it in two. It might be a different type of specter but it wasn’t strong.

The revenant was still a low level Rank-1 and it couldn’t withstand even one strike from Crow.

It fell to the ground and growled one last time before being crushed to death by Crow’s boot.

"Come to papa!" Mater opened his mouth and sucked out its Chaos.
