Chapter 576: His Name is—

He Juan waited with bated breath. He could feel his heart pounding in his throat and the lack of oxygen sent a throb of pain to the base of his skull. But none of that registered with him at all, for all of senses were wholly attuned to the movement of the Omega’s lips, from the quick puffs of air he breathed out down to the slightest quiver of the pinkish flesh. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

He had no idea that his heart could sink with such excruciating dread when the Omega finally breathed out a single word after what seemed like half an eternity, "...Yes."

One word – it was only one fucking word – yet He Juan felt like he could see his entire world crumbling apart before his eyes.

A laugh slipped out of his lips, unbidden. It was full of bitter irony. "Fuck..." he cursed softly, covering his eyes with a palm. In doing so, he missed the glimmer of tears hidden beneath the bunny mask as the Omega gazed at him, full of sorrow, grievance yet also a hint of anticipation.

Fuck you, He Juan. Fuck you and your memory loss! Foul curses flooded He Juan’s mind, directed to none other than his past self. Why? Why must he do something like that? And see where it led him? He had not only implicated an innocent omega in his mess, and he had also... he had also betrayed his mate! The one and only omega he should cherish above all else in his life!

Every piece of the puzzle finally clicked into place in his mind. The inexplicable urge to return to China, the fragments of memories that haunted his dreams, the aimless longing with nowhere to turn to...

It was all triggered by the past He Juan’s lover, a random Omega he wanted absolutely nothing to do with!

Oh God, he had never felt as disgusted with himself as he did now. He felt so filthy, so unworthy. He wanted to cut open his skin and bleed himself dry if it could wash away the remnants of his sins.

To think that he had sworn... to think that he had once sworn on his life that Mu Yuze would be his one and only. Even if the Omega rejected him, the best he could do was to stay celibate for the rest of his life instead of—

"Why don’t you ask?" The omega’s voice cut through the whirlwind of his thoughts, soft yet also tinged with emotions He Juan could not decipher, nor did he have any intention of delving deeper into it. "Don’t you want to know who that person is?"

"No," He Juan’s voice came out more like a growl, startling the other person. But he couldn’t afford to care about it now, not when the call of destruction was singing in his veins. He had to destroy something – anything – or else he might attempt something stupid like jumping down from the window to atone for his infidelity.

"No, I don’t want to know." He barked out a laugh, cold and anguished. "It’s not like I will love them like I used to. It’s impossible."

He Juan turned away, missing how the Omega staggered backward as though He Juan’s words had physically struck him. He missed the flash of disbelief, hurt and anger in the Omega’s black-blue eyes. He missed them all, for he was too consumed by his own hurt.

"Get out," he hissed, his previous courtesy nowhere to be seen. His clenched fists trembled from the effort he exerted not to overturn the entire room upside down. "Get out of this place before I tear you apart. I don’t have the slightest intention to deal with the police, so the least you can do is make yourself scarce. Now!"

He believed his obvious threat and the murderous rage emanating from his body was enough to drive the Omega away. After all, the man should have known better than to provoke a wrathful superior Alpha teetering on the edge of madness. But once again, the Omega acted against his expectations as he continued to press further,

"Why? Why is it impossible? Is that all your feelings amount to? You—"

"Shut up." He Juan’s knuckles cracked, his eyes turning bloodshot. His headache intensified with each word the Omega said, but more than that... more than the pain on his body, his heart felt a thousand times worse. It was like poisonous barbs had wrapped themselves around the most tender part of his heart, stabbing the rotten flesh and squeezing every droplet of blood from within. However, he’d rather die than to acknowledge it. Why would he feel heartache for a random Omega whose face he couldn’t even recall? Had he finally gone insane to the extent where his own body would betray him too? He Juan really wanted to laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all.

Alas, the brazen Omega was not finished. "You even promised to court him, to cherish him as long as you live, to marry—"

BANG!

A furious growl erupted from deep within He Juan’s throat as he seized the Omega by the neck and forcefully slammed him down on the mahogany table with the force enough to break bones. "SHUT UP!" his voice thundered. "Can’t you hear me?! I told you I don’t want to know so shut the fuck up!"

"—to marry him," the Omega was hellbent on concluding his sentence, or to be more precise, on making this place his graveyard. "His name... his name is—"

He Juan tightened his grip, feeling the flutter of the pulse as the Omega gasped for breath. It would be so easy to snap this fragile neck, and oh he was so tempted to do it now. If this man thought he was still the kind and gentle He Juan who viewed himself as nothing but an ordinary civilian, he was sorely mistaken. At this moment, He Juan was a man without a bottom line. He wouldn’t mind killing one or two Omegas to appease his wrath.

His voice dipped low, laced with venom. "It seems like you really want to die. You—"

The thick clouds outside shifted, allowing a slender ray of moonlight to grace upon the Omega. And He Juan’s words instantly faltered as he observed the tears streaking down the omega’s cheeks and the bruise on his bottom lip where he had bitten down too hard.

For one suspended second, He Juan felt his thoughts tumble in disarray at the sight of those tear-stained cheeks. Why... why was this person crying? Why would he—

Impossible— this Omega— could he be... the past He Juan’s lover?

He Juan had not even wrapped his head around that staggering possibility yet when the Omega gripped his wrist, almost breaking the skin with the pressure of his nails. And it was that pinprick of pain that managed to jolt He Juan out of his chaotic reverie, enough for him to notice that the Omega’s mask had been knocked askew due to the harsh handling, revealing a pair of extremely familiar black-blue eyes.

In that heartbeat, He Juan was struck dumb.

He knew... he knew these eyes. He could recognize them anywhere. He knew them the way he knew the back of his palm, the way he sensed blood pumping in his heart. He would still recognize them even if he was scattered to ashes, even if he returned to the soil and became one with Earth. These soulful eyes filled with so much hurt, sorrow and indignation... these beautiful eyes that had once haunted his dreams at every waking moment seven years ago...

"His name is... Mu... Yuze..." the Omega choked out each word, his lips tilting into a self-deprecating smile. "Are you going to... abandon him... for the second time... Gege?"
