Chapter 568: Only Me

Uh-oh. Kang Guanyu gulped nervously.

It seemed like he had said something wrong, or else why would the temperature in the car instantly plummeted past the freezing point? Meeting Mu Yuze’s gloomy eyes through the rearview mirror, he discreetly rubbed the goosebumps rising on his arms and showed a sheepish grin, "Hehe, Comrade Mu. I didn’t mean to discriminate against Omegas. Of course, they’re not ’little’, they’re all big and mighty. Big and mighty!"

Beside him, Li Zhi palmed his forehead and resisted the urge to smack this silly guy for how oblivious he was.

Mu Yuze continued, still with a deadpan tone. "Finish your earlier sentence. What do those Omegas want to do once they catch a glimpse of XIU?"

Kang Guanyu’s mouth formed a solid ’o’ as realization struck him. Shifting nervously in his seat, he responded in a careful tone, "I–I swear I didn’t mean anything by that. You know how XIU is. He is tall, handsome and charismatic so it’s not strange... for those Omegas to..." his voice became smaller and smaller as he watched a layer of glacier cast over Mu Yuze’s features. In a bid to salvage the situation, he hurriedly added, "But don’t worry, Comrade Mu. I’m sure that he likes you alone!" He even winked and added a finger heart in the end.

This time, Li Zhi finally couldn’t bear it anymore and slapped Kang Guanyu on the back of his head, earning him a yowl. "What the fuck are you talking about?" He hissed through gritted teeth. "We’re not here to seduce him like those Omegas! XIU is a criminal, keep it in your mind!"

"Geez, I know..." Kang Guanyu grumbled softly as he rubbed the spot he had just been hit.

Li Zhi stated with a dark expression, "Since we can’t reach XIU through Prime Minister Liang, we can only resort to this method. Try to draw him out and leave the rest to me and the others."

Kang Guanyu chimed in, "Hey, doesn’t this remind you of the undercover mission Mu Yuze did with—" he promptly sealed his mouth shut when Li Zhi glared daggers at him, feeling slightly aggrieved.

Taking a deep breath, Li Zhi then turned to Mu Yuze, his gaze sharp and scrutinizing, "Are you sure you can handle this? I don’t want to see your emotions get the best of you like last time, Mu Yuze."

"I’m sure," Mu Yuze responded in a heartbeat, his expression nothing but resolute and unwavering. "Last time, it’s an error on my part and I guarantee it won’t happen again, Captain. You can suspend me after this if you find me committing the same mistake. Besides, if there’s someone with the highest chance of success for this mission, it can only be me."

His bold declaration prompted Kang Guanyu to snort in amusement, while Li Zhi sighed with resignation. "Fine, I will hold you to that. Don’t let me down, Officer Mu."

When the clock hit 11 pm, a report came through Li Zhi’s walkie-talkie. "Captain, all teams are in position. Over."

"Received, over," Li Zhi acknowledged. He looked at Kang Guanyu and Mu Yuze, nodding, "Good luck."

Both Kang Guanyu and Mu Yuze nodded in return before they got out of the car. For this mission, the two of them were chosen because one, it was easier to move around during the special event if they took the ’Omega camp’, and second, aside from Mu Yuze who was a literal Omega, Kang Guanyu was the person closest to the description. He had a slim and slender stature, a harmless appearance, and moreover, his weak pheromones made it easier for him to mingle with the Omegas.

They walked toward the club with Kang Guanyu in front with Mu Yuze trailing behind, maintaining their act of not knowing each other. But of course, they had been briefed beforehand on what they were supposed to do, so nothing would go wrong in the process. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Mu Yuze raised his head to take in the tall and elegant building before him, and he felt his heart racing at the notion that he would meet He Juan soon. Clenching his fists, he took a deep breath to calm his frayed nerves. Keep your cool, Mu Yuze. You must not mess up now!

He went to join the line and when his turn came, he reached into his pocket and pulled out an elegant black card adorned with a golden phoenix symbol. The police already had one genuine card at their disposal after Zhao Xinya’s murder case, and it wasn’t difficult for them to replicate another.

The bouncer gave the card a brief inspection before granting him entry.

And as soon as he stepped through the door, a surge of deafening music greeted him along with the disco ball that emitted a dazzling array of flashing colors.

The layout of the club was similar to the one he had visited in Yuyang City, but of course, the one in the Capital would be grander and more spacious, easily accommodating up to a hundred people on the dance floor alone. He wrinkled his nose subtly as the mixture of perfumes, liquor and smoke assailed his nose.

In front of him, Kang Guanyu seemed to get into the mood and swayed to the music, quickly blending into the crowd of dancing bodies. He disappeared from sight in the matter of seconds. Mu Yuze was not worried, though. He walked at his own pace, trying his best to avoid contact with others and slipping away from those who took a second glance at him.

Again, he couldn’t help but recall the only time he had gone undercover with He Juan at Phoenix Ablaze in Yuyang. Back then, He Juan had held him close and protected him so well that no one had the chance to see his face, let alone approach him. Mu Yuze had never felt so safe and secure in a noisy and crowded place before, with his face buried in the crook of He Juan’s neck, inhaling the man’s intoxicating scent and—

He hastily shook his head when he realized where his mind had wandered. Focus, Mu Yuze! He chided himself. Now is not the time to reminisce!

He successfully made his way to the lounge and plopped himself down on an empty chair. The bartender greeted him with a courteous smile, "Long day, Sir? You look frustrated."

Did he? Mu Yuze had no idea. Rather than frustration, it was more accurate to say that he was buzzing with tension and anticipation. Even his fingertips were shaking ever so slightly. He could no longer tell whether the vibration coursing through his body came from the thundering music or the rapid pounding of his heart.

Licking his chapped lips, Mu Yuze had the sudden urge to place an order, "I’ll have a Long Island Tea, please." It was the same drink He Juan had ordered last time.

The bartender responded enthusiastically, "Coming right up, one Long Island Tea!"

While waiting for his drink to be prepared, Mu Yuze discreetly observed his surroundings.

Had he been an ordinary civilian, he might have thought that the club looked busier than usual before leaving it at that. However, being a police officer, he noticed a few people who behaved peculiarly. They dressed better than others, their expressions oscillating between giddiness and nervousness. They navigated the crowd with firm steps as though they knew exactly where they were heading. And sure they did.

"Your drink, Sir." The bartender said as he slid the glass across the counter.

Mu Yuze nodded his thanks and took the glass filled with brown liquid that resembled tea. Under the bartender’s gaze, he took a small sip, stood up and hooked his finger. The bartender blinked in surprise, but still leaned in eagerly to offer his ear regardless.

Mu Yuze came near and whispered the secret code that would take him to an entirely different realm, "Alice in Wonderland."

Alice in Wonderland— that was the name of the special attraction in this club.
