After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 153: What He Wants to Do
"I can! I can drive!"
She quickly scrambled over from the middle into the driver’s seat.
Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs had already climbed onto the roof of the car.
Fireballs rained down on the surroundings.
In the darkness, Nina Jacobs simultaneously activated her Earth Element Superpower.
A nearby telephone pole by the roadside instantly toppled over, crushing a horde of zombies.
At the same time, it significantly blocked the zombies swarming from behind.
More and more Fireballs gathered around her, quickly forming a brilliant Fire Serpent.
BOOM!
The Fire Serpent coiled rapidly around the car.
As it struck down the Strength Element variant zombie, it also ignited the other zombies nearby.
The people inside the car were stunned beyond belief.
"So she’s this powerful."
Holden Shaw gazed at the figure above.
Slender, yet powerful.
Even though the situation was incredibly dangerous, she showed no signs of panic.
He felt he had to do something, too.
Nina Jacobs caught a figure appear out of the corner of her eye.
"What are you doing?"
She hadn’t expected Holden Shaw to get out of the car.
"I used to not know what I was doing, but now, I know exactly what I’m doing. You guys just go on ahead. Don’t worry about me. If I’m still alive, I’ll come back and find you."
Holden Shaw unwrapped the gauze from his hand.
Before Nina Jacobs could say a word, he sprinted toward a withered thicket to the left.
To lure the zombies toward him, Holden Shaw shouted as he sliced open his palm.
The scent of blood quickly drew away the surrounding zombies.
With zombies still roaring around her, Nina Jacobs tore her gaze away.
She controlled the Fire Serpent to blast through the few zombies in front of them and shouted:
"Drive!"
Hearing Nina Jacobs’s command, Pascal Paige slammed her foot on the gas and plowed forward.
The car quickly disappeared into the darkness.
Meanwhile, the abandoned hotel was already surrounded by zombies...
The car bumped and jolted along the road in the dead of night.
The headlights only illuminated a distance of about two meters ahead.
They had clearly escaped, yet everyone in the car was unusually silent.
"Will he come back?"
Wendy Marshall broke the silence.
They had been driving for nearly half an hour since leaving that dangerous area.
But there was still no sign of Holden Shaw outside.
"It’s hard to say, but not entirely impossible,"
Nina Jacobs replied.
If he were an experienced Speed Element Superpower User familiar with the surrounding environment, escaping wouldn’t be too difficult.
Besides, the system had just sent a notification; she had received four bottles of Healing Potion for saving people.
Besides Pascal Paige, she had indeed rescued four people.
’Pascal Paige survived in my past life, so Holden Shaw must be one of those four.’
"I don’t even know his name."
Pascal Paige didn’t dare to stop.
She kept glancing at the rearview mirror, hoping to see the Speed Element Superpower User appear, but there was nothing.
Another wave of silence fell.
The car finally reached the foot of the mountain.
The surroundings were quiet, and even the zombies that had been behind them were long gone.
Only then did the people in the car dare to breathe a sigh of relief.
"Rexton Mountain... We’re here."
The group looked ahead.
In the dark, Rexton Mountain was an even deeper shade of black than the night sky.
It stood before them like a tall, silent sentinel.
"Everyone, look over there."
Just then, Yvonne Willow pointed back in the direction they had come from and shouted.
The road to Rexton Mountain was a continuous uphill stretch.
So even though they were stopped at the foot of the mountain, they had a clear view of the distance.
"The camp... is it on fire?"
Jessica Vance covered her mouth, staring at the fiery glow in disbelief.
"Then Mindy and the others... does that mean they’re...?"
At this thought, no one spoke.
Pascal Paige sighed.
Normally, she would have felt sad for the other women who didn’t make it out. But when she remembered the angry looks those women gave her when she decided to leave, and everything that had happened recently, she suddenly felt a sense of release.
"That was their own choice,"
Pascal Paige said.
’Jonathan Thatcher is a piece of work. Some of them would resist constantly. Others would submit, or even try to curry favor. All of that was understandable. After each time, she would use her Superpower to heal her injured sisters. But she never understood why some of them questioned, mocked, or even grew jealous of her. It wasn’t until Nina Jacobs appeared that she realized why. Someone wanted to drag her down with them.’
A shiver ran down her spine at the thought.
’If I hadn’t trusted Nina Jacobs just now...’
"Are you very familiar with this area?"
Just then, Nina Jacobs, who was beside her, turned and asked.
Nina Jacobs had just noticed that Pascal Paige seemed extremely familiar with the route they had taken.
Even when faced with a fork in the road, she always chose a viable path without hesitation.
"Pascal used to be a tour guide on Rexton Mountain. She’s quite familiar with the whole area,"
Wendy Marshall replied.
"This is my hometown. I only got my tour guide license to earn a little extra money on the side. But I’ve been climbing Rexton Mountain since I was a kid, so coming here is like coming home."
Pascal Paige had stayed here ever since the apocalypse began.
She was even the one who first led people to take shelter in that abandoned hotel.
Nina Jacobs nodded.
Her original destination had been Rexton Mountain.
She just hadn’t expected that Pascal Paige, whom she had rescued on a whim, would turn out to be a local guide.
"Don’t worry, there’s another path down the other side of the mountain. We can leave that way first thing tomorrow morning."
Pascal Paige proactively reassured the group.
They could all see it.
The road they came on would be impassable for a while, as the only route was now swarming with zombies.
"There’s a visitor’s lounge just ahead. Should I take you there?"
Pascal Paige pointed in a certain direction.
The car wasn’t very big.
With a big guy like Wayne Warner, it was already extremely crowded.
There was a lounge just a short walk away, and she figured it was better than all of them being crammed in the car.
"Is it safe? Won’t it be dangerous?"
Wendy Marshall asked nervously.
They had heard back at the camp that there might be zombie animals on Rexton Mountain.
But after all this time, the camp never seemed to have been bothered by any.
"Take us there. It’s still early,"
Nina Jacobs said.
’If we stay in one position in the car all night, we probably won’t have the energy to explore Rexton Mountain tomorrow.’ Besides, with her Five Senses Enhancement, she didn’t detect any danger nearby.
Pascal Paige drove the car directly to the entrance of the visitor’s lounge.
Wayne Warner was the first one out, clearing away the toppled billboards and dead trees in the area.
After confirming there was no danger inside or out, Pascal Paige opened a side door in the lounge.
It surprisingly led to a few clean and tidy staff dormitories.
"I used to stay here overnight often when I was guiding tours,"
Pascal Paige said, feeling a wave of nostalgia.
It had only been a little over two months ago, but thinking back now, it felt like a lifetime away.
"Um... thank you both for getting us out of there. If it weren’t for you, we would have definitely..."
Jessica Vance was on the verge of tears.
Right then, she just felt incredibly lucky to have met Nina Jacobs and Pascal Paige.
"It’s getting late. Get some rest."
Nina Jacobs had intended for them to take turns on watch tonight, but Jessica Vance and the other two insisted on standing guard all night.
"How could we possibly sleep? We’re too excited. You two rest up. We’ll be on guard outside, so don’t worry,"
Wendy Marshall said with a smile.
The few of them were actually all Superpower Users, so standing watch wouldn’t be a major issue.
"We’ll leave it to you, then."
Nina Jacobs had no objections. After entering a single-person room, two Little Zombie Rats scurried out through a crack in the window...
