Chapter 38 -44: Memories from Six Years Ago (15)

Isabel Smith was startled. She had only kissed him once, and he fainted. She was panicking, and eventually, a passer-by reminded her to call 110.

When they arrived at the hospital, Isabel discovered that Percy Stanton was allergic to mangoes. He was given an anti-allergy shot by a doctor who seemed chaotic, and then placed in a hospital room, saying he should stay overnight for observation.

That night, Isabel stayed by Percy’s side, never leaving.

When Percy woke up, it was already late at night.

At first, he was a bit confused, and then remembered what had happened, after which his mood became quite bad. He felt that he had been extremely unlucky lately, as he kept bumping into Isabel, who was like a jinx to him.

As he had a mango allergy inherited from his father Quinton Thompson, he couldn’t touch mangoes since he was a child. The jinx girl, however, had had mango milk tea before kissing him.

He opened his irritated eyes and saw the girl who had fallen asleep at his bedside. It was late autumn, and although the hospital had a constant temperature, she was still slightly cold without a quilt, causing her body to tremble slightly.

He thought to himself, “Why should I care if she freezes to death?”

Then, he turned his gaze to the side and saw a plate of cut apples on the table. The apples were cut very poorly, with large and small pieces, crooked and ugly.

Without thinking about it, he knew she was the one who had cut them.

He snorted coldly and looked away. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Isabel’s hand by the bedside and noticed that several band-aids were stuck to her fingers.

He frowned, sat up from the hospital bed, and saw the trashcan filled with paper.

He lifted the covers, got out of the bed, and grabbed the paper from the trashcan, seeing that the paper had large areas of red on it.

Standing in the hospital room, he looked at the poorly cut apples and her fingers with band-aids. His emotions changed dramatically.

Then, he experienced a feeling that he couldn’t tell whether it was heartache or anger: “If she doesn’t know how to peel apples, why bother trying?”

He stared at her sleeping face for a while before walking over and picking her shivering body up, placing her on the hospital bed, and getting in bed himself, holding her in his arms and covering them both with the quilt.

His movements didn’t wake her, and she slept soundly.

Her hair and body fragrance, however, kept rushing into his nostrils, making it impossible for him to sleep all night.

The next day, when she woke up and saw him, her face instantly turned red. Then, as if receiving a shock, she sprung out of bed, and carefully examined her body. After making sure she hadn’t been violated, she walked back to him with her head held high, and asked, “Classmate, what’s your name?”

Before he could reply, her phone rang. As she answered, he could hear a middle-aged woman’s scolding voice on the other end saying that she hadn’t gone home all night and wanted her home now.

Isabel hung up the phone, saying “Uh huh” and “Ah” throughout the conversation. Possibly worried about her mother being angry, she quickly said to Percy, “Classmate, I have to go home now. My mum is angry. Next Wednesday is my eighteenth birthday, my adulthood ceremony. If you’re willing, could you lend me your company for the night as my dance partner?”

At that time, Percy, like now, was very arrogant and was dead set on saving face. Even though he was secretly overjoyed, he maintained a cold attitude and nodded, signaling his agreement.

Isabel immediately waved her hand, saying, “I’ll send a driver to pick you up that day. See you next Wednesday!”

Then, she hurriedly left.

However, on the following Wednesday, they did not meet.
