Arthur opened the system panel, his heart racing as he scanned his status and that of the Osborn family.
While his personal attributes had seen a modest increase, thanks to his relentless morning workouts and combat training with Silvester, what truly caught his attention was the family’s progress.
They had leveled up from a Level 2 Founding Family to a Level 3 Rising Family!
But that wasn’t all; their assets had skyrocketed to an impressive 300 billion Unicreds!
This figure didn’t just represent cold hard cash; it encompassed properties, vehicles, patents, trademarks, the whole shebang.
Over the past few months, the Osborn family had been on a buying spree, acquiring valuable real estate left and right.
Among their prized possessions was a staggering 10,000 square kilometers of land that they are currently developing, a piece of property worth trillions!
Arthur couldn’t help but smile at the thought; this land could serve as a safety net for the Osborn family should anything go awry with the system. After all, who knew how long this blessing would last?
Shaking off his daydreams, Arthur focused back on the system panel and blinked in disbelief at the new missions laid out before him.
The main mission? Develop every industry under the Osborn banner until each boasts a market valuation of 1 trillion Unicreds.
Sounds easy enough… right?
With about fifteen industries in play and numerous subsidiaries under each umbrella, this task felt daunting, but Arthur shook off any doubts. He was determined to tackle it head-on!
Next came three side missions: dominate Aegis District’s underground world; monopolize at least one industry with a grip of 90%; and deal with Christopher Campbell.
Out of these options, dominating Aegis District seemed like the most straightforward challenge, at first glance.
Neo-Luminara may be known as Aurelian Federation’s third capital city (and its smallest), but it was no small fry, it sprawled larger than China itself and housed over a billion people!
Each district there was akin to an entire province back on Earth, bustling with tens of millions of residents.
Aegis District stood out as one of Neo-Luminara’s top three districts, a hub for business and technology where massive corporations thrived alongside elite families like Arthur’s own.
Yet beneath this polished surface lay darkness—a stark contrast between those living in luxury and those trapped in crime-ridden shadows.
Imagine a world where the sun rises over Panterra’s skyline, casting a golden glow on glass towers.
Inside these towering structures, men in tailored suits sip espresso, animatedly discussing stocks and vacation plans. In manicured parks nearby, children laugh, their innocence seemingly shielded by an illusion of safety.
The streets gleam, not just from diligent municipal workers but from an unspoken agreement that nothing unsightly shall tarnish this postcard-perfect image.
Here, everything appears orderly.
Here, everything seems kind.
News anchors beam as they report on yet another economic boom and a drop in crime rates, while charity galas hosted by the elite fill the social calendar.
The worst scandal? A politician’s affair or a celebrity’s drunken escapade, entertaining gossip rather than genuine threats to society.
People sleep soundly at night, convinced that justice is blind and that laws protect them; they believe monsters exist only in stories.
But what if I told you that beneath this polished surface lies a darker reality?
They don’t see the strings being pulled behind the scenes.
They don’t notice the bribes that keep their streets "safe", not from crime itself but from its very appearance.
They remain blissfully unaware of girls vanishing through nightclub backdoors or bodies buried beneath construction sites, all while deals are brokered in the shadows of their golden-lit restaurants.
As they dream peacefully, the city breathes its true name: a beast fed on blood and silence.
In the Aegis District’s dark alleys, footsteps echo from men who vanish with daylight. Here, loyalty is bought with fear; power is wielded through violence; survival demands actions that those living on the Bright Side could never fathom.
Gangs carve out territories not marked on maps but etched into flesh; black markets thrive where their pristine world crumbles to dust.
For instance: A CEO’s daughter posts a yacht selfie at the same time a child smuggler unloads cargo in the same harbor.
A senator or mayor gives a speech about "justice." That senator’s son runs a rape ring, covered up by his father’s influence.
A news headline: "Crime Rates at All-Time Low!" A gang burns bodies in a warehouse to keep the stats clean.
Arthur sat quietly in the backseat of his car, lost in thought, a storm brewing behind his deep-set eyes. If he was to dominate Aegis
District’s underworld, he knew it would involve killing, something he detested, but this was a mission issued by "the system." Would it punish him for completing it?
He couldn’t say for sure if this first side mission was truly as easy as he had initially believed.
Determination flickered within him like a candle flame as he said to Evolon beside him.
"Gather intel on all the gangs, criminal organizations, and forces operating in Aegis District," Arthur commanded, his eyes narrowing with determination. "I want a complete investigation of the underworld."
"Sir, it’s already done!" Evolon’s voice chimed in almost immediately.
"Report!" Arthur urged.
"According to my data, there are approximately 200 gangs and criminal entities in Aegis District," Evolon replied. "Of those, 10 are top-tier, 70 fall into the middle tier, and the remaining groups are low-tier operations led by those at the top."
Arthur’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. "That many? I had no idea the underworld was so vast here!"
"Evolon, are any of these gangs backed by powerful figures?" he asked cautiously.
"Affirmative, Sir. Most of these gangs receive support from wealthy families and high-ranking officials who use them for their illicit activities. The top ten gangs are backed by the most influential families in the country.
In fact, these branches have extensive networks across the nation and even beyond, their power and influence within the underground world of the Aurelian Federation is unparalleled," Evolon explained rapidly.
Arthur’s expression turned grave; this side mission he thought would be simple was proving to be anything but. It was just as complex as his other two missions!
The system had tasked him with dominating Aegis District’s underworld, a feat that would inevitably put him at odds with some of the country’s most powerful families.
Offending them could mean disaster for his Osborn Family.
"I need to plan this carefully," Arthur muttered to himself as he gazed out of the window, deep in thought.
"Evolon, can you list the top ten families backing these criminal organizations?" An idea sparked in his mind.
"Certainly, Sir! They include: Whitmore Family, Kensington Family, Sinclair Family, Lancaster Family, Campbell Family, Harrington Family, Fairchild Family, Montague Family, Blackwood Family, and Davenport Family," Evolon reported while projecting data on his phone screen.
"These families have centuries of history; their roots run deep within Aurelian Federation society. Notably, one member of the Whitmore family served as President for two consecutive terms."
Arthur gulped audibly as beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
He quickly poured himself a glass of red wine and downed it in one swift motion.
"Damn! System! Are you trying to kill me?" he exclaimed inwardly.
What does it really mean to have a family member serve as the Federation President for two consecutive terms?
The Whitmore Family certainly knows how to instill fear.
Compared to them, the Osborn Family feels like nothing more than an ant, easily squashed beneath their heel.
"System, can i not complete side mission 1?" Arthur asked hopefully, his eyes gleaming with desperation.
[Host, you may refuse side mission 1; however, be warned: all family properties and assets will be halved as punishment!] The system’s cold voice echoed ominously in his mind.
Arthur’s expression darkened instantly. It hit him hard, this system was forcing him into a corner.
If he didn’t comply with the mission, it wouldn’t take long for the Osborn Family to crumble back into obscurity.
"Damn! What a broken system!" he exploded again, frustration spilling out in a flurry of curses.
Completing side mission 1 meant crossing paths with families that were practically titans in this world.
Just the tenth-ranked family alone could obliterate the current Osborn Family with a mere flick of their wrist, not to mention those in the top five; even a sneeze from them could spell disaster for Arthur’s family!
