Chapter 40: Jyselle’s Challenge

After he met with King Gaëlf, Levian made his way to the Goldtree Academy training grounds.

He was given access to the grounds without trouble.

After all, his name as the true elf had spread.

He had become recognisable, at least in Goldtree, the elf capital.

Once inside, he was met with a sight that took him by surprise.

First, Archmage Supreme Jyselle was standing on the sidelines, watching a duel that was taking place in the centre of the room.

It didn’t take long for Levian to figure out who one of them was.

Diana?

Diana Emberbury, dressed in red robes that matched her red curly hair, was facing off against a blonde-haired elf in the white uniform of the Academy.

The two mages blasted at each other with pure blue mana. Their forces clashed evenly, neither getting the best of their opponents.

It was only when Diana pumped her magic with a golden essence that she was able to start pulling ahead.

She threw a ball of radiant energy that her opponent was forced to block using a pure mana barrier.

Then, when the student was about to mount an attack of her own, she was shocked to find that Diana was no longer in front of her.

The red-haired woman had summoned a gust of wind, sending her soaring into the sky. From there, she summoned a golden spear in her hand and launched it like a javelin towards her opponent.

The blonde-haired student’s eyes went wide, and she tried to raise another defensive barrier, but the spear broke through with ease.

Before it managed to crash into the woman’s face, Archmage Supreme Jyselle raised her hand and simply clenched her fist.

All of the magic in the room vanished.

Diana fell to the ground gracefully carried by the wind. She wore a triumphant look on her face, whilst her opponents was filled with a mixture of fear and rage.

The room fell silent, as Jyselle glared at the two women for a moment.

"Thank you, Anubis. You may leave now." She then spoke suddenly.

The blonde-haired girl bowed her head respectfully, anger still evident, before strutting from the room.

Diana had not yet noticed Levian, so he continued to linger by the door until the cold atmosphere went away.

"Anubis is a High-Silver. If you want to achieve your goal, then you’ve got to defeat such opponents faster." Jyselle’s spoke sternly to her student, Diana.

Diana nodded her head. "I’m sorry, Supreme. I didn’t want to..."

"To hurt her?" Jyselle interrupted. "Did I not tell you to treat your sparring partners as if they were your enemies. Do you think I became Archmage through showing mercy?"

Diana pouted, and her head lowered to the floor. There was clearly a sadness in her, after being reprimanded by her teacher.

The blindfolded Archmage let out a sigh and softened herself. Then, she patted a hand on Diana’s hair.

"Cheer up, you did well. I’m sure your husband thinks so as well."

Diana suddenly looked and turned her face towards the door. She found Levian standing there with a smile, and her face suddenly lit up.

She ran over to him, faster than he had expected, and wrapped her arms around him. He did the same, wrapping his arms around her waist, and the two enjoyed each other’s embrace.

"You’re back... You reckless man, you’re back." She said, voice quivering slightly.

Levian laughed as he pulled away from the hug. "Oh come on. A few enemies aren’t enough to take down a commander."

He then gestured to his flowing red cape with the Goldtree symbol on it, to which Diana stared with admiration.

"It’s beautiful... I knew you had it in you to be a leader. There aren’t many men who can do what you did."

"I could say the same about you. You’ve already broken through to silver in just a few days?"

Diana’s cheeks blushed at the compliment. "Just... trying my best to catch up, that’s all."

"Yeah, your timing is actually pretty good Lee." Archmage Supreme Jyselle suddenly cut in from the sidelines. "Mind if I call you Lee?"

"...I would rather you not. That’s what my brothers called me."

"Ahh yes, and we all know what happened to them."

Jyselle began to circle Levian, and even though she wore a blindfold over her eyes, she seemed to be looking him up and down.

Levian could only stand there, tense.

"My estimates put you at around mid-gold, but you’re definitely much stronger if we include your unique race. Your strength must match a commander’s... are you up for a little challenge?"

Diana shared the look of worry on Levian’s face. "B-but he’s just returned home."

A challenge from Diana was an intimidating thing, however Levian would be a fool to turn down an opportunity from one of the most powerful women on the elven empire.

"Sure." He conceded. "As long as it doesn’t kill me."

Jyselle laughed. Something about death seemed to amuse her.

"Oh, nothing as serious as that. In fact, it will help both you and your wife."

The woman stopped circling and offered her a challenge.

"Take your wife, Diana, into a gold-ranked portal, and help her breakthrough to gold. I’m sure you will also be able to reap benefits from it, being gold yourself."

Diana’s face looked as though she was about to protest. So far, all of her ranking up had been achieved through sparring, and lessons from the archmage.

To enter a dungeon already would be a real risk to her life.

Levian however, couldn’t help but smile at the idea. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Archmage Supreme Jyselle is definitely platinum rank or above. I completely forgot that she would have access to TRUTH, and be able to open up dungeon portals...

Inside, I can get closer to High-Gold, and I might even be able to earn my elemental charges for the Godforge, taking me one step closer to my Primordial Weapon.

And then, one last idea popped into his head.

"L-levian, why are you smiling like that?" Diana asked with scepticism. It didn’t do much to change Levian’s mood.

"Diana, you are a mage right?"

The woman nodded her head and answered shakily. "S-sort of. My class is... complicated. I will explain later."

"Good enough. I’ll make you a mythical weapon. You will be the first person that I’ve done this for."

Her eyes went wide, and her body seemed to freeze in shock.

Before she could answer, Levian turned to the blonde-haired Jyselle.

"I accept your challenge, under one circumstance. Open a Platinum Dungeon for us. Gold will be too easy."
