Chapter 80: Chapter 50: Eating Wontons

After closing a big deal, Chen Wanqing didn’t shut her shop and go straight home.

It was already time for lunch, so Chen Wanqing decided to take her little cousin out for some wontons.

Yuzhu didn’t want her cousin to spend money and kept insisting, "Let’s eat at my house. Lunch must be almost ready. If anyone’s treating, it should be me. I haven’t even given Miss He a gift for her engagement yet!"

Yuzhu was wise beyond her years, and when she spoke with such a straight face, it made one wish they could have a daughter exactly like her.

Chen Wanqing, who adored her, replied with a smile, "You’re still just a little girl. It’s the thought that counts; I don’t need a gift from you. Besides, your parents gave me a silver hairpin for my engagement. And on top of that, I just closed a huge deal and I’m feeling happy. Are you really not going to give me the pleasure of treating you to a meal?"

"But... but..."

"But you need to tell your family first, right? Then I’ll walk you over."

In Qingshui County, there was a tradition that the new mother’s family could only visit five days after she gave birth. It was called "the five-day visit."

Since her second aunt lived with her own family, the question of her maternal relatives coming to visit was moot.

But her second uncle had married into his wife’s family, and the members of the main Chen household looked down on him for it. Her father, however, being the eldest brother, had always had his back.

Over the years, whenever the Qian Family needed anything, her parents always pitched in with money and effort, making sure her second uncle never lost face.

Take the five-day visit, for instance. Even if her father was too busy to go, her mother never failed to observe the custom.

Today was the fourth day since her second aunt had given birth, and her family hadn’t paid a visit yet. As she was from a younger generation, and an unmarried one at that, it would be even more inappropriate for her to go. Therefore, she could only ask after them from the Qian Family’s doorway.

But unexpectedly, just as she was locking up her shop, the elderly master of the Qian Family walked over.

Qian Yuzhu jumped in excitement and ran straight to the old man. "Grandpa, I told you I could get home by myself! You didn’t have to come get me."

"Of course I do. You’re still just a little tyke."

Yuzhu giggled, linked her arm through the old man’s, and told him she wasn’t coming home for lunch because she was going to eat wontons with her cousin.

By then, Chen Wanqing had walked up to them. She curtsied, greeted him, and then said, "I haven’t had a chance to take Yuzhu out in a long time. I thought I’d take her for a little outing today." 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

"You’re Yuzhu’s cousin; you can take her out whenever you please. But lunch is already made at home, so why don’t we all eat first before you go out? Come on, Wanqing, come home with us. Your grandmother knew you were opening the shop today and made all your favorite dishes. She even roasted a chicken and stewed a whole fish."

Chen Wanqing politely declined, but the old man insisted. When she still refused, he saw he couldn’t persuade her and ambled on home by himself.

Chen Wanqing led Yuzhu to a restaurant called "Fresh Pork Wontons" for lunch.

The plaque hanging above the shop bore those three words. Don’t be fooled by the small storefront; it didn’t even have a proper sign. In fact, the "Fresh Pork Wontons" plaque itself was a gift from a regular gourmet patron.

But the fact that a patron had gifted the eatery a plaque was a testament to how delicious the food must be.

The "Fresh Pork Wontons" shop specialized in three varieties: Fresh Pork Wontons, Fish and Pork Wontons, and Shrimp and Pork Wontons.

The Fresh Pork Wontons, as the name suggested, were filled entirely with pork. For the Fish and Pork Wontons, minced fish was blended with a certain ratio of pork. The Shrimp and Pork Wontons followed the same principle, simply swapping the fish for shrimp.

Chen Wanqing’s favorite was the Shrimp and Pork Wontons, while Yuzhu clearly preferred the pure pork variety. Chen Wanqing ordered a bowl of each, along with some small, flaky pastries and a cold side dish to nibble on while they waited.

Unexpectedly, before the wontons had even arrived and after only a single bite of pastry, a familiar figure suddenly caught her eye.

The man started when he saw her, too. After a brief pause, he immediately began walking toward their table.

Seeing her cousin freeze, Yuzhu asked anxiously, "Are you choking, Cousin? Slow down! These pastries are good, but they’re so flaky the crumbs always get stuck in my throat... Huh? Cousin, who are you looking at?"

Yuzhu finally sensed something was up and turned to look behind her. When she saw who it was, her eyes went wide with delight.

A guess formed in her mind, and she called out tentatively, "Brother-in-law?"

Amid the bustling crowd, Zhao Jing nearly stumbled. A blush rushed to his cheeks like an incoming tide, instantly flooding his entire face.

He gave a light cough and nodded at Yuzhu, not bothering to correct her that it was too soon to be calling him "Brother-in-law."

Zhao Jing did his best to compose himself and asked Yuzhu softly, "You must be the cousin from the Qian family, correct?"
