Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 312: You Already Know I’m Not Her
Clara quickly stepped back as Andrew walked past her towards the wall, he pressed a button on the wall and in a while, Katie arrived In the room along with the newly hired nanny.
"Master, I heard the nursery bell so I brought the nanny over." Katie said. "This is Eliana, she’ll be taking care of the young missy from now on."
The nanny, a humble looking woman bowed slightly. She had been hired by Elder Sterling and she was undoubtedly the best to care for the child.
Andrew didn’t glance at Clara, he handed the child directly to the nanny.
"Take care of her." Saying that he walked out of the room.
Clara glanced at the child who was quiet in the nanny’s arms.
She felt a stinging pain in her chest. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
What did Andrew mean by she wasn’t worthy of holding his daughter?
It couldn’t mean what she thought it did.
Clara quickly went after Nicholas following him into the master bedroom.
"Andrew." She called standing at the door.
Andrew who was undoing his tie stopped, he tilted his head but didn’t fully look at her.
She walked up to him knowing that Andrew was very close with Anne, considering how affectionate he was to her a while ago, so why couldn’t she be too. If it was just a suspicion she would throw him off it with her looks.
Like an attentive wife she came to stand in front of him, reaching out her hand to help undo his tie but as if disgusted at her attempt to touch him Andrew suddenly raised his hand grabbing her by the wrist.
Clara felt her heart slam before slowly looking up into his eyes, however a smile suddenly appeared on his face.
"What did you say our daughter’s name was again?"
As she heard his question, Clara’s heart beat heavily.
Why was he asking about the name? Could it be she had messed up by saying that name? Was that why he was suspecting her right now?
"Her name is... Elizabeth." Clara stuttered slightly before gripping her head as If she were feeling dizzy.
"Oh, I’m so tired. The doctor said I would get headaches and lapses in memory sometimes." Clara added, in case she had messed up by naming the baby Elizabeth, this excuse could make Andrew rethink his suspicion right?
When Clara heard nothing, she opened her eyes only to realize Andrew was no longer standing beside her, she turned to find him by the bed holding a small note in his hand.
"And you decided to name my daughter Elizabeth, because you saw it in this damn note, am I right?"
Clara’s expression fell at once, her heart slamming hard.
"What are you talking about Andrew? I thought...I thought I remember you wanting to name her that. Ah, my head hurts, I think I’m remembering things wrongly, the doctor said that would happen." Clara said hoping it would work and Andrew would quickly drop the topic.
"Did he? I’d like to hear the doctor tell me himself why you’re having headaches and lapses in memory. Why don’t you come over here my wife?"
Andrew held a hand to beckon her over.
The first half of his words made her anxious, but the latter half made her delighted.
He believed her right?
Since he called her his wife so lovingly, it meant he believed her.
It was a good thing the doctor who followed her from the hospital was her person, Elder Sterling wanted to hire some doctors but Clara had insisted she felt comfortable with this specific doctor and begged the old man to let him attend to her, who knew the old man loved and doted on Anne this much, he immediately gave in.
With the track record Anne had left, life would be perfection for Clara by taking her place.
Elder Sterling loved her, Andrew adored her, she would get absolutely anything and everything she wanted.
Clara walked up to Andrew and he helped her sit in the bed, to continue carrying on the pretense she held her head as If she was still having a headache.
"You can tell Katie to call my doctor, he is still around somewhere, he’ll tell you why I’m going through this right now." Clara said weakly, lying on the bed and resting her head down, but secretly a smirk raised her lips. It was quite unsettling to see such a calculating and devious look on Anne’s face, but the face might look like Anne’s, however deep inside was someone with a corrupted heart.
"Why take the trouble, my doctor will check himself." As Andrew said this, he didn’t even give her a chance to react before calling Shawn.
Clara immediately sprang up from the bed hastily, her eyes wide.
"Andrew...why call your private doctor? It’s just a mild headache, it might even be a side effect of childbirth." She said, warily looking at Shawn who was coming closer and closer as he entered the room.
"It might be, but let Shawn tell us that."
Shawn nodded at Andrew as if they’d had a conversation prior to this, before he sat at the edge of the bed to examine Clara.
"Your hand please, Mrs Sterling." Shawn said the words with hidden malice in his tone.
Clara hesitated, tightening her fists into the sheets.
Damnit! If she let him examine her, he would find out that she didn’t give birth. Was it possible he would know that from her pulse alone? He would have to examine the private parts of her body to know that right? And she doubts Andrew would let that happen.
Thinking about that, Clara brought her hand forward to Shawn.
Shawn took her hand and began to examine her pulse.
"Usually, hospitals keep birth mothers and the babies in the hospital for at least 24 hours to examine for any birth complications, why did you insist on being discharged immediately?" Shawn queried casually.
"I just hate being in hospitals." Clara replied.
"I see." He said while checking her blood pressure.
Clara was very nervous, but she kept a straight face.
"How heavy is your bleeding?" Shawn asked again.
"What?" She knew nothing about what was being asked, so she looked clueless for a second.
"Postpartum bleeding, is it too heavy?" Shawn asked again.
"No, just normal."
"And how would you know what normal is exactly, Mrs Sterling?"
New birth mothers themselves had no idea what was going on in their bodies, they wouldn’t know if something was normal or not and most times, women who had just given birth usually contacted doctors very frequently with questions whenever they noticed something strange in their own bodies.
In fact, there was no definitive spectrum of normal when it came to postpartum bleeding, every woman was completely different, some women experienced heavy and intense bleeding and others experienced mild bleeding, doctors at the hospital usually made it a priority to inform birth mothers of the things that would happen to their bodies in that span of few days after delivery.
If Clara had truly given birth, she would naturally have noticed so many unusual things in her body which she would never think was normal, so her lie was easily spotted by Shawn.
Hearing Shawn’s comment about how she could know it was normal, she was suddenly rendered speechless. Unable to give an answer, Clara turned to Andrew with a pleading look in her eyes.
"Andrew, I’m really tired. Can I get some rest now, please?"
Andrew didn’t reply to her, instead he said to Shawn.
"My wife says she’s been having memory lapses whenever she gets a headache, is that normal or is she completely losing her mind?" Andrew queried as he walked away from her side strolling across the space in the room. His tone seemed heavy with sarcasm as If he was toying with her and not actually making an inquiry with the doctor.
Shawn chuckled, "As a doctor I might say it could be normal in some cases. But as your friend I’d say she is completely losing her mind."
Shawn was already in on the situation happening at this moment, so he was aware that the woman in front of him hadn’t given birth at all. Her blood pressure indicated it and he had felt it from her pulse as well. Which meant, Andrew’s suspicion was right, she wasn’t really his friend’s wife.
Clara’s eyes went wide, looking from Andrew to Shawn.
"Andrew..." She called again but he cut her off, still speaking to Shawn.
"So what do you think is the better punishment? Feeding her to hungry sharks so they can take slow bites out of her body, or tearing her head off her body?" Andrew asked as he suddenly stopped walking, his eyes zeroing onto Clara who watched him with wide open eyes.
At that moment, his phone rang and he hurriedly picked it up.
No one heard what was said at the other end, but an emotion of desperation showed in his eyes, which changed to relief a second later. He let out a long shaky breath of relief, one would think tears would pour out of his eyes until he swung a sharp, dark gaze to Clara.
"Andrew, what were you talking about, who do you want to punish?"
The moment he began to walk back to her, Clara knew the plan had fallen.
That look in his eyes...it felt like he wanted to skin her alive.
This is not how he looked at who he thought was his wife a while ago.
He already knew!
How had he come to know so fast, he didn’t even spend a full day with her yet and he already knew she wasn’t Anne?
Did he really love that bitch this much?
Even if he knew, Clara wouldn’t let him hurt her, not when the real Anne was in her hands.
That was right!
Anne’s life was in her hands.
Clara smirked before saying, "Let me guess, you already know I’m not her right?"
Andrew suddenly stopped in his tracks.
