Chapter 543: -51- Rumors

"It has been proven that the world will keep turning without anyone, and the adaptability of people is also extremely strong. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

From the time King Louis V began the Great Purge and harshly stripped many vassals of their titles, apprehension reigned throughout the Royal Capital. The nobles worried about getting caught in the crossfire, while the common folk feared being arbitrarily labeled cultists by the City Guard Team and the Local Judging Forces.

Yet, less than a week had passed since the purge, and Lutecia had returned to its former tranquility as if the Great Purge and the extensive scrutiny that enveloped the city had been illusory.

The reaction of the commoners was still somewhat understandable.

After all, in the Great Purge, Louis V had tried to minimize the impact on commoners, targeting only the pieces of the Blood Demon Church within the slums.

What surprised Charlotte, however, was the reaction of the nobility.

She had thought the nobles’ dissatisfaction and rebellion against the king would last a long time, that they would perhaps even unite in the face of Louis V’s relentless pressure. Yet, once Louis V had pacified them with a portion of the reclaimed noble wealth, almost all of the other nobles had calmed down.

They continued their salons, their singing, and dancing; although discussions of the Great Purge were still common, these had also turned into idle chat and complaints after meals and drinks.

The inertia and short-sightedness of the New Moon nobility were more outrageous than Charlotte had imagined.

Charlotte could roughly guess what the nobles were thinking: they figured that King His Majesty’s strengthening of central power was fraught with difficulties and that even stripping some nobles of their titles would not significantly affect the big picture.

As long as the fire did not burn themselves, as long as the king still remembered to share benefits with the nobility, many nobles saw the king’s central power as merely an intermittent strengthening of the royal family’s authority.

"Politics wanes with the death of its people," has always been a political tradition in the kingdom. With no heir as strong as himself, Louis V’s age has perhaps lessened some of the nobility’s worries.

’When the new king takes the throne it will be fine. As for now, just endure it a bit longer.’

This was a sentiment even Charlotte had heard.

However, Charlotte did not think that everything would go according to the wishes of the nobles.

It’s true that Louis V was getting on in years, but his determination to strengthen central authority was firm, not only for the sake of the Royal Family but also in preparation for Holy Presence Day.

To be able to build a lavish palace like the New Moon Palace, Louis V’s belief in strengthening central power was certainly not a whim, but a result of long deliberation. Charlotte believed that what the nobles could think of, Louis V would have considered as well.

Moreover... Charlotte believed that Louis V must also have countermeasures in place.

However, that was no longer Charlotte’s concern.

Now that she knew about Holy Presence Day, she should shift her focus to strengthening her own forces and power. As for the New Moon Kingdom, there was no need to get involved.

Her Royal Authority Contract with Louis V and her declaration of singleness would buy her plenty of time.

As for the future...

If the moment truly came when the gods descended, the old order would undoubtedly be shattered. How to rise amid the turbulent winds of the continent would depend on one’s own abilities.

Charlotte chose to go to the Royal Family Library for the same reason.

Knowledge is power. Some knowledge she might not need, but the Northern Lands do, as do her believers.

The carriage slowed to a stop, and Charlotte collected her thoughts.

"Mistress, we have arrived."

Sebastian’s respectful voice came from outside the carriage window.

Charlotte nodded slightly as a sign for her maid Sherry to open the door, then she stepped out of the carriage.

Lifting her head, she was greeted by the sight of a towering, majestic tower.

The tower was built of some black colossal stones, its surface faintly etched with ancient and complex magical runes, the weathered marks showcasing the passage of time.

This was the Royal Family Library of the New Moon Kingdom.

The Royal Family Library is the oldest library in the history of the New Moon Kingdom, tracing its origins back to the Yonette Empire, initially as the repository of the Yonette Imperial Mage Tower.

After the fall of the Yonette Empire, the Imperial Mage Tower was inherited by the Valva Family, who sealed some forbidden books and converted the Mage Tower into a library.

The library’s collection was said to exceed two hundred thousand volumes, from Transcendent materials, to the various histories and biographies of the continent, to literature, art, and alchemy, it had everything.

Most alluring amongst the library’s collection were the various Transcendent Books hoarded by noble families.

These were the tomes that recorded how to awaken Bloodline Powers and how to develop Transcendent strength.

This was also the main reason for Charlotte’s visit, aside from historical material.

Transcendent power originates from bloodlines, and although the Castel family controlled many Transcendent Books, the quality was not very high, and most were specifically suited to the Castel bloodline and not suitable for widespread use.

Since Charlotte intended to build her own force, developing Transcendent power was imperative. Granting Divine Grace to believers was one aspect, but she could not rely solely on Divine Grace to enhance her followers’ power. Providing the tracers with various "Secret Manuals" was also one method.

The pathway to Transcendent ascension was controlled by nobles... So, offering believers a path to Transcendent ascension constituted a form of "Divine Grace," conducive to more people starting on the Transcendent path and strengthening the power of the Northern Lands.

Charlotte did not have much time, and she could not pick and choose believers to develop into priests who were suited to Holy Power, like the Holy Royal Court did. Thus, the best way was to bloom in full, to enhance the power of all believers as much as possible, and in turn, by leveraging the strength of her followers, to enhance her own power.
