Chapter 17 - 17 - The Vampire Demon

"What the fuck is going on?!" Zion stood stunned at the sight before him. The assassin, which he clearly sliced in half, was now regenerating.

He saw how beaten, disheveled, and bloodied the person was. Their body, pale as if it lacked blood. Their ears were slightly pointed, but not to the extent of an elf. Fangs sprang from their mouth as it was agape, gasping for air.

"So you really are a demon, a vampire at that." Before the vampire could fully regenerate, he pulled him in close using aura force and stabbed the vampire in the heart. Surprisingly, the vampire didn't die, at least right away.

"You annoying piece of shit!" The vampire yelled.

"What do you want with me?" Zion feigned ignorance.

"Don't act like you don't know! The treasure hunter was working for us! However, thanks to you're meddling, our plans were ruined because of you!" He coughed up blood, feeling the holy power tearing apart his insides.

"So it's true you're after the relics to invade the middle world. You're strong though, strong demons shouldn't be able to cross over."

"Haha, what's your definition of strong? Strong for humans, or strong for demons? You middle-worlders are weak! So weak that a low-ranking demon like myself can give you trouble."

'He's a low-ranking demon? Then that imp must be a regular demon with no rank. If he's only a low-ranking demon, I don't want to know how strong a mid or even high-ranking demon would be.'

"Thanks for the info, I'll plan accordingly." He increased the holy power in his blade, burning the insides of the vampire.

"Y-You didn't accomplish anything. There w-will be more, m-more powerful than me, and you will w-wish you had died by hands. We're everywhere, even where you least expect it! You won't know what hit you until it happens. Heheheh hahahaha! I'll see you in hell!"

Zion didn't even respond, he simply poured more holy power into the vampire's heart and watched as he started to combust.

"Bleughh! Remember my name, the vampire assassin Carl. I'll save you a seat in hell." After finishing his sentence, he turned into a pile of ashes, but not before Zion severed its head so he could have evidence of demons being in the middle world.

"Another fucking Carl!" Zion dropped to the ground, taking a minute to catch his breath before heading back to his instructor.

"This is an intricate barrier that can hold even a Transcendent Stage Cultivator. My power alone won't be able to break this." It had been a few hours, and Professor Heather wasn't able to break the barrier, so she called the headmistress. Raven attempted to break the barrier and while she did manage to weaken it, she still couldn't break it.

"It's as if my mana is being eaten by it."

"Step aside." Zaleena, who came because she heard from her sister what was going on, rushed to the scene to save her son.

Pulling her sword out of her sheath, the blade hummed with her mana, and with one swift motion, she completely split the barrier in half, the mana spiraling out of control warping space for a few moments.

"Figured you two would come." Zion came out holding the vampire's head from its hair and tossed it toward his Mom and Aunt.

"What's this?" His mother asked.

"A demon, a part of the Vampire race. He attacked me because he knew I was the one who stole the map and compass for the relics."

"How the hell did a demon infiltrate the human kingdom? How was he even able to evade the church?" Zaleena questioned.

"Don't know, but he said that demons are everywhere. Infiltrated places we wouldn't even know or think of. He said that I wouldn't know what hit me until it already happened."

"Demons infiltrating the kingdoms and taking it over by the shadows sounds like the war that happened thousands of years ago." Raven and Zaleena both started thinking of what to do next.

"Mom, can you take this head to Reina? My first true encounter with demonic energy wasn't pleasant and my body is aching because of it. Also, since this guy knew about the compass and map, which happened to be in our territory, I think some demons may be there."

"I got it. I'll also try to uncover clues related to demons re-emerging."

"Check the monster horde that should be coming in a few weeks. Maybe the recent increase in them is due to the demons." Zion theorized

"Noted."

"I'll check the academy to see if any of them has infiltrated it. Archdemons share their power with their underlings to spread their influence, so if they are in the academy, I can't have the students be caught up in their schemes." Raven spoke

"And the church?" Zion asked

"We won't let them know for now, but if the situation gets out of hand, then we'll have to get them involved. The church specialises in demon hunting, so they would also be our best bet for finding out what's going on." Raven knew involving the church wouldn't be the best thing for Zion.

"However, it's still too early for the world to know you're an Apostle of the Goddess of Light. We'll continue with our plans and make adjustments along the way. Focus on finding young talents and becoming stronger yourself." His mother said as she kissed him on the cheek while his aunt healed his wounds.

The students were forced to leave when the headmistress arrived so it was only the three of them at the Fractured Plain entrance. Zion yawned and entered the carriage that belonged to his aunt and fell asleep on her lap.

His mother huffed, puffing out her cheeks in frustration as her sister playfully teased her about Zion choosing another lap to nap on during their journey back to the academy.

"Demons are infiltrating the middle world, this is just like how the war started 10,000 years ago," Raven said as she rubbed her hand through Zion's hair.

"Do you think we should talk to mother?" Zaleena asked

"No, we should be able to handle a few stragglers. However, if it's a full-scale invasion, we'll head back home."

"I'll contact you later. My territory might have a demon lurking in it and I'll have to kill it before it causes any problems."

"Be careful, Demons are naturally stronger than dragons after all. Don't let your guard down."

"I know." Zaleena smiled then disappeared into the night.
