Chapter 72: Ch 72: Shopping for the engagement ring

The atmosphere in the imperial palace was tense this past week.

Despite it being a happy time where Prince Kaiden and Lady Sera were preparing for their long-awaited engagement ceremony, the mood in the palace was not as happy.

And the reason behind it was Prince Kaiden, who was often seen walking around with a lost expression on his face. That sometimes happened even when he was with Lady Sera.

Even now, when they were shopping for an engagement ring, Prince Kaiden looked lost in his thoughts and reached for a golden ring that was one size too big to be for Sera...and was in a male style.

"Prince Kaiden, I told you that I don’t like styles like those. And that one is clearly too small for you. But if you like that stone...maybe try this one?"

Sera pushed a bigger and more lavish ring toward Prince Kaiden to take. It caused the smile on his face to fade just a little as he took the offered ring.

He looked at the ring he had and then the one Sera had pushed onto him, and they looked like a set...

’The smaller ring will look better on Shuu’s finger. He won’t be able to take anything much heavier with his bony fingers. As for the matching set...maybe I should buy it to make sure no one else does.’

Just the thought of someone else wearing matching jewellery with Shuu was one that made him want to buy everything in here so that it would never happen.

’Maybe I can gift Shuu more than one pair and keep the other one for me. I am sure he will be shocked if I always somehow manage to match him...I might need to spy on him a little...’

Prince Kaiden’s thoughts were going down a dangerous path, but he did not feel like he wanted to stop.

If anything, he felt like he wanted to kidnap Shuu and keep him close. It would be much more entertaining than whatever he was currently doing and also—

"Prince Kaiden, are you paying attention to me? I am asking you how this ring looks on me. Does it look that bad that you cannot even reply to me?"

Sera looked ready to cry as she held her hand out. The ring she had picked was a size too big for her and far too clunky on her finger. It did not suit her well, but he could tell that she really wanted it.

"Isn’t that a little too big for your hand? Maybe a smaller ring will be better. That way, it won’t hide your beautiful hand."

Prince Kaiden’s words caused Sera to giggle, and she put the ring down. She immediately felt better after his compliment.

"You are right. I should look for a ring that is more my size. What about the ring you liked? Maybe I should try that...?"

Sera reached for the ring in his hand, but Prince Kaiden immediately felt like he had to pull it away from her.

He closed his hand around the ring and pulled it away, leaving Sera with a confused look on her face.

"I don’t think this ring will be able to do your beauty justice. So how about we look for another ring? If you don’t like any of these, then we can commission a new one as well."

Prince Kaiden told Sera, and she giggled, forgetting all about what was worrying her.

"I don’t mind commissioning a new ring. But I also feel like it would be a waste of time. I want to be engaged to you as soon as possible. So I will pick a few rings from here and ask for a second opinion from my friends." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Sera sounded happy as she picked up more than a dozen rings to get a second opinion for. Prince Kaiden looked at her fondly, but truthfully, he had a feeling none of the rings she would pick out would match the fondness he had for Shuu’s ring.

’I will give the ring I picked out to Shuu in the evening when I go to visit him. I am sure he would be surprised to see me visiting him like this.’

Prince Kaiden was in a good mood as he went back to his office. But his mood became sour as soon as he ran into Sera’s father.

"What are you doing here, Count Diltz? I thought you were too busy with your other work?"

The count looked at Prince Kaiden with a serious look on his face before he bowed to him.

"I am not here for much. I just submitted some paperwork from my territory. But that being said, maybe you should finally change the way you call me, Prince Kaiden. After all, you and I are going to be family pretty soon."

The cunning snake of a man told Prince Kaiden, and he wanted to deny that. But Sera’s face flashed across his mind, and he paused.

"I will change the way I address you after Sera and I are married. But you will never be my true family. The only connection we have is that you are Sera’s father and nothing else."

Prince Kaiden’s words were calm and cold. It showed just how much he disliked the man in front of him.

But Count Diltz did not look angry or sorry. If anything, he looked just as calm as he had before.

"Ah, is that so? I feel a little sorry to hear those words. I will try and make sure to change your mind about myself. After all, it will make Sera incredibly sad if we don’t get along."

The count was trying to manipulate Prince Kaiden with his words, and the more he spoke, the angrier Prince Kaiden got until he could not take it anymore.

Count Diltz noticed this and decided to take his leave before Prince Kaiden could explode.

In the end, Prince Kaiden was left all alone in the hallway with only one thought on his mind.

’I really want to meet Shuu right now. I wonder what he is doing right now?’
