Chapter 146: Ch 146: You looked my way

In the end, the tea party had the opposite effect of what everyone wanted.

Instead of showing which side they should take in this new conflict, it just made everyone aware that Emperor Kaiden still had Shuu in his mind and heart.

But the people who had been strictly raised on the temple’s teachings and had blind faith in the temple’s words found this to be disrespectful.

Still, they could not say that in front of the hero himself. So they waited for a little longer before making a judgment.

There was still time for Emperor Kaiden to come back to his senses and see the error of his ways. They just hoped that it wouldn’t be too late by the time he did see that he was wrong.

__________

"Princess Danielle, the tea party was lovely. Thank you for inviting us to it."

One of the ladies sitting beside Princess Danielle told her in a light and flirtatious tone. Her flattery went through Princess Danielle’s ears and then out immediately. She had been raised in such a way that she felt happy when she received compliments, but she did not dwell on them for much longer.

But unlike her, Lady Canarie was different.

Unlike Danielle, she had been raised with much more love and care, but her upbringing had also been much less strict and restrictive. That was why her understanding of social norms was a bit abnormal, and she often made mistakes, like speaking up when she did not need to.

And this time was no different.

"Do you all know that I helped Danielle prepare for this tea party? It makes me happy to see you all enjoying it so much."

Canarie spoke with a cheerful voice, and the people around her immediately gave her startled expressions.

But Canarie either did not notice, or she did not care that she was making people uncomfortable with her presence. She stood in front of them proudly, with her head held high.

Before Danielle could break this awkward silence and bring everyone’s attention back to her, Countess Switz clapped her hands and stood up.

"You are right, Lady Canarie. You have done marvelously. I am sure our emperor will acknowledge your efforts soon as well."

Countess Switz praised Lady Canarie immediately, and her words made Canarie flush. This was the first time she had been acknowledged by someone, and it made her feel shy and appreciated.

"Thank you for your kind words, Countess Switz. I will make sure I live up to your expectations in the future as well."

Lady Canarie assured the Countess, and Danielle immediately felt irritated by her cousin’s easy promise.

Countess Switz’s face held a small smile, and she nodded.

"Of course, my lady. I am sure I will need your help soon. And I am also certain that by then you will have Emperor Kaiden beside you. After all, it is only a matter of time before he falls for your charms."

Countess Switz had a swift tongue, and she knew how to use it as well.

The more she spoke, the more Lady Canarie seemed to fall for her words.

"Hmm, it’s getting late. You ladies should start heading back now. I hope you have a pleasant day ahead."

Princess Danielle put an end to this conversation before it could venture into dangerous territory. The only one who did not notice this was Canarie, who let out a pout as she looked at her new ’friends.’

"Aww, do they all have to go now? I wanted to spend a little more time getting to know them-"

"Canarie, it has gotten late. We need to let these people head home now."

Princess Danielle reminded her, and Lady Canarie pouted but gave a polite bow as well.

"I see. In that case... Thank you for your presence. It was a delight to have you all here today, and I hope you come to visit us again."

Lady Canarie played the role of a benevolent host well. Even if she was not the one who hosted this tea party, she behaved as if she were the mistress in charge of it all.

Seeing her insolence, a few noble ladies smiled behind their fans and sneered. It did not go unnoticed by Princess Danielle, and she gave the ladies a glare, causing them to look away.

Of course, the person in the middle of it all did not notice and happily smiled at the leaving ladies.

Sigh

’Canarie has a lot to learn. Had it been Shuu, this hostility would not have gone unnoticed.’

Princess Danielle suddenly missed Shuu. But she quickly shook her head to throw these thoughts out of her mind.

__________

"Rin, Caelis, it’s time to head back."

Shuu stood up once everyone else had left, and he turned toward the kids sitting beside him.

It was a miracle that they had managed to sit so still throughout the tea party, and Shuu could not help but feel worried.

One-year-old kids were usually filled with energy, and this pair was no exception. Usually, it was hard to get them to sit still for even a little bit. But today was different, and Shuu... felt really worried.

Between the two of them, Caelis was more open with him, so Shuu decided to start with him.

"Caelis, is something wrong?"

Shuu asked his son, but Caelis looked uncomfortable. For a minute, Shuu was not even sure if he would get an answer or not.

But then Caelis looked at him with a determined face that looked off on a child as young as him.

"Shuu-! Don’t like...! Can we... not do... tea parties? Don’t like... people..."

Caelis seemed to be concentrating to get his words right, and it looked adorable to see such a young child trying to get these words out.

Shuu felt a twitch in his heart as he looked at his adorable kids.

Unfortunately, he could not do as they had asked of him.

"I know that these tea parties are a little... annoying. But they are needed to make friends. You will understand when you are a little older."

Shuu assured the kids, but he himself did not believe a word of what he said.
