The royal court was in full session. After almost a year of peace and silence, it was finally filled to the brim once more as they all welcomed the ’companion’ sent here by Princess Danielle’s father.

The beautiful female with caramel hair and green eyes stood in front of Emperor Kaiden and the court. Her eyes looked at Shuu with curiosity and disdain before she masked it all and had a small bow.

"I present my greetings to Emperor Kaiden and his court. My name is Canari Hanerson, daughter of Duke Hanerson and also Princess Danielle’s cousin. I am honored to have been chosen as your companion."

She bowed to show her respect, but no one spoke to let her know that she could raise her head.

She tried to look up, but Emperor Kaiden seemed to have no interest in her as he continued to look at his companion sitting beside him.

"Tsk."

That voice finally broke the silence and Princess Danielle stepped forward.

"I am glad to have you here, Sister Canari. However, there is a little problem with your claim. You see, this lady here is making the same claim as you—that she has the mark of the companion as well. But as per customs, there can only be one companion. So we are going to have your mark checked."

Princess Danielle clapped her hands and the Saintess stepped forward.

With the High Priest gone, she was the sole person of authority in the temple. But she still needed to be in Emperor Kaiden’s good books for things to work out for her.

"I will verify the claim of your marks."

She announced and everyone turned their attention toward her.

The Saintess took a sharp breath before she looked at the pair in front of her. She extended her hand toward their marks and checked.

Both were real marks and she coughed to hide her nervousness and pulled her hand back.

"I have checked on these marks and they are both real. But since this is something that is not possible, we can only assume that the Demon King is trying to play a trick on us. Under such circumstances, we cannot accept such a claim from these two parties."

She declared and everyone fell silent.

A new doubt crept inside all their minds at this new news.

"Hey, now that I think about it, wasn’t the old Companion chosen under a prophecy as well?"

"Yeah... and what’s more, it was a long-standing prophecy while this one is..."

"It must be the Demon King. There is no way we can acknowledge something like this."

The public sentiment changed all of a sudden and Saintess Rosalyne let out a sigh of relief. She had done what she could for the situation.

But the two chosen ’companions’ were not happy. Especially Lady Elysia, who immediately protested this claim.

"Hey-! This is not fair. These marks are not a lie. Especially mine, which is not a lie. My god specifically came to me and told me that ’I’ was the chosen one."

She insisted and people spoke even more.

"You heard her, right? She said God and not the Goddess."

"Should we have them executed? This is ill-omened..."

People questioned and Lady Elysia suddenly felt like she had made a mistake. But she refused to take a single word back of what she had said.

Finally, Saintess Rosalyne decided to step into this mess once more and her eyes looked at the two candidates standing behind her.

"Since it is related to the Demon King, the temple would be more than... Ahhh..."

The Saintess suddenly clutched her head and the goddess’s mark appeared on her head.

Emperor Kaiden, who had seen her like this last time, suddenly felt like he had to stop her. But no one dared to get close to the Saintess currently.

[The child born to be the companion shall become my helper and a new fate shall be laid out in front of the hero. Shall they refuse to comply, it will bring forth a disaster...]

The Saintess collapsed, her body no longer being able to take on the pressure of that external power.

Everyone stopped to look at what happened with a wide-eyed look. They talked among each other and wondered what they should do about this situation.

Suddenly, another possibility came to their minds.

"Hey, is it possible that this is not about the Emperor but... his companion?"

"The Saintess told us that this might be the Demon King’s interference, but it might be the goddess’s will?"

"What is going to happen now?"

Once again, all eyes turned to look at Emperor Kaiden to see his reaction. They all wanted a reason to tear into him and make sure of his position.

But the Emperor remained quiet and gave them all a blank look.

"This court session is over. The only person I have and will acknowledge as my companion is Shuu."

He declared and decided to exit the hall with Shuu walking behind him not too far away.

The two chosen companions gave Shuu a resentful look as they watched him leave. They had both fallen in love with the Emperor and the mark was not making things easier for them.

Their jealousy was displayed clearly for the world to see.

And yet, everyone knew that there was nothing to be done here. The only one who had any say here was Emperor Kaiden, and even he seemed to not care about the prophecy.

No one said anything, but they all watched the Emperor leave with a calm look in his eyes. Something bad was likely going to happen soon...

’Fucking hell. What a turn of events. Just what is going to happen in the future? Also, should we change sides now?’

People were weighing their options regarding the current situation. But they all had one significant question.

’What will happen to the position of the Crown Prince now? Would it still be Prince Caelis... or would that change as well if a new companion were to marry Emperor Kaiden?’
