Chapter 96: A New Enemy

However, only after a few steps, Haruki was hit with another dizzy spell accompanied by a bit of head. He reached to touch and massage his temple to ease the headache as he continued taking one staggering step after the other.

This was not the first time he was drinking such a wine but this was the first time he got so drunk. It is truly the mood that determines how fast one gets drunk. He wanted to go upstairs but when he could not trust that he could grip the handrail tight enough to prevent falling down the stairway, he stopped.

He sat down on the starting step and rested his head against the starting newel. He frowned glancing back at the multitude of steps he would have to cover to get upstairs to his room for a change of clothes.

He sighed and rose up from the step. This time, he did not attempt to stubbornly advance upstairs for cautious of not unreasonably setting himself up for a visit from the grim reaper. He staggered to the guestroom and crawled under the covers before he finally passed out.

Kiyoshi came to wake him up just in time for him to prepare for the family meeting they had. When he dressed and arrived at the house, he went to his office first after eating his breakfast. He ordered Ren to bring Souta in.

Souta walked into the room and bowed deeply. His gaze didn’t rise to look at Haruki even after he was told to sit down. Haruki looked at the man seriously hoping to get a detail out of the man’s minor or major actions.

He sighed when he got nothing he decided to ask instead, "What made them release you?" Haruki asked his voice calm yet a bit cold like a seasoned investigator.

Souta seemed to be taken aback by the sudden question because this time, he raised his head to look at Haruki but dropped his gaze almost immediately. That was enough time for Haruki to see the deadness of the man’s gaze.

After the first torture he had with Kiyoshi, the man looked scared out of his witness but it would take something a lot more traumatizing to leave anyone with such a dead stare.

"Why were you released?" Haruki asked once again when Souta left his question unanswered.

"Did you want them to keep me or kill me?" Souta murmured in a low hoarse voice that was barely audible.

Haruki narrowed his head and tilted his head slightly subconsciously. He wondered if the man’s voice was that way because he had cried through the previous night or it could have been because of screams while in captivity.

"I asked a question," Haruki spoke sternly disliking the man’s response.

"I understand why you gave us up to him," Souta said with that same voice that sounded as though his throat was irritated by being forced to speak. "And I understand I am an eyesore, and will also understand if you decide to finish the job yourself."

"I didn’t give you up to anyone. Your father found people he was familiar with to save him from going to jail and when he got released, he was scared that I would come for him so he took you and your brother with him to their death."

Haruki took the extra effort to explain things to Souta although he felt if Souta hated him, there was nothing he could do about it and that would just mean an additional enemy to the countless enemies he was certain he had.

"Your father started the business years ago, imagine the number of people just like yourself that he made fatherless or even orphans. This was something I could not overlook but I could not bring myself to hurt a family member by the family law so I tried to use the law but your father got his way out and got killed as an act of vengeance."

"I said I understand!" Souta shouted but his voice wasn’t loud. It sounded hoarse and muffled. "I said I understand," he added between clenched teeth still without meeting Haruki’s gaze.

"I am glad you understand that. You step the man up for an accident and that was what led to his death and putting the family in a difficult position. It will be impossible for you to return as the descendant of this family you are but I won’t punish you with the family law."

"Why?" Souta raised his head for a few seconds to meet Haruki’s gaze again.

"I guess you have been punished enough." Their family was headed towards becoming fully legal most of their family laws were not legal and some were too inhumane to be considered at all by a sane human so Haruki could not bring himself to use any of them at this moment.

The man looked down at his hand and muttered, "It was all my fault. If I had never plotted that vengeance then they wouldn’t have known his blood type."

Haruki could not hold back a sigh even as he tried to maintain a cold countenance. It would be a lie if he said he was not pleased with the fact that he was done handling the most troublesome family members.

However, there was a fresh nagging feeling that troubled him a bit. He had thought that the father and son duo were too troublesome and handling them might be a bit difficult considering they had roots buried deep in the underworld even more than Haruki but their case was handled all too easily by using someone else’s blade.

It could be the prime minister but for a man who suggested Haruki gave him his body to avenge his son’s death, he did not see the man as someone who would take the first step to avenge his son. He had a son in a foreign country and didn’t even bother ensuring his son was safe.

A prime minister’s son went missing while solo travelling and no one noticed. What would have been expected was for them to be aware he was in danger even as soon as he had the accident that got him injured.

Well, all these would not be out of place if the man didn’t give a damn about this son of his. When Souta was excused from the room, he looked at Ren as the sudden build of impending danger rose rapidly.

"I need you to investigate that prime minister’s son. Was he the man’s legitimate son? Was he adopted? Find out about their closeness as family members and what his other children think about this son."

Ren was not expecting Haruki to ask him to investigate something that was long resolved. He parted his lips to ask Haruki for the reasons but he ended up pressing his lips together.

Just before Ren could leave, Haruki stopped him with yet another order, "Investigate the race track properly. Interview the mechanic who touched the car he drove and find out exactly what damage he should have caused. Check the track for anything that could have led to an accident or make it worse."

Ren left and Haruki walked to the conference where the elders of his family sat waiting for him. When he walked into the room, he felt perhaps not everything was under his control as he had imagined and perhaps all that happened with his granduncle was simply him dancing to someone else’s tone.

He held back a sigh and prevented his hand from rising to comb through his hair as he maintained an indifferent appearance. He could be overthinking. He prayed that was the situation because that would mean he was in control and less trouble to go through to punish the person behind it all.

It was yet another hectic day as the meeting continued into lunchtime and end finally ended with the eldest of all his grandfather’s siblings still living going on his knees to beg Haruki to avenge his brother’s death.

Haruki could feel a fresh throbbing headache execute his well-being. He couldn’t reach for his temples, he looked at the man as he held back from massaging his temples.

"Someone exerted vengeance on your brother for the crimes he committed, I want to assure you that as much as I want to, I can’t do much because it won’t be a vengeance anymore, I will simply be starting an unnecessary war. It could turn out to be a diplomatic one and you should know how much I hate dealing with such issues."

Haruki hated how everyone had been forcing him to speak more than he desired, making him explain himself over and over. He wanted vengeance too for the insult of taking two people’s lives for one life but with the new feeling he had, he could not help but feel he was dealing with someone more dangerous.

The man who was on his knees raised his head to look at Haruki with a deep frown on his wrinkled face. He seemed to be cursing Haruki multiple times on his mind but Haruki walked past him and left the room without caring.
