Chapter 560: Check your blood pressure

"Do Kim and Jenny know?" Andrew asked finally. "And May and Ford?" He assumed that they did. The families had all grown close.

"Kim tried to talk Noah out of going to see your ex, but he wouldn’t listen to her. Nicole stayed by Kim’s side as the two of them watched over the interaction, ready to jump in if anything happened." Thomas told him. That wasn’t that surprising, but Andrew was glad that they were getting along well.

"And May and Ford?" Andrew prompted. The silence that dragged on the other line had Andrew’s arms shaking. Why? Was it something bad? Had something bad happened?

"May nearly had a heart attack when she heard the news. She was on bedrest for a few days." Luis admitted. "She didn’t want us to tell you, but I just don’t feel right not telling you. She’s better, back at work, but it was quite a shock to her. Ford was against not telling you or alerting you, but it was just a spike in her blood pressure that was so severe she passed out." Andrew felt his body shake.

His lips trembled, his eyes wide as he processed the words. She’d fainted? Hearing the news?

"The Doctors, are they-"

"Will is taking care of her personally, Andy. She’s in good hands, and when he isn’t with her, our trusted people are with her. She’s getting the best care, and the best medicine. Even if she kicks up a fuss that we aren’t letting her pay a penny for it. Family doesn’t pay in these circumstances. Plus, her insurance is enough to pay the Doctors, we won’t take anything more than that." Luis’ voice washed over Andrew. Calm. Soothing.

Andrew took a few deep breaths, Maxwell turning in his arms to rub his face against Andrew, his scent filling his nostrils. It was a calming moment, support and love all wrapped in one.

"She got enough rest?" Andrew asked and Amir was the one who spoke up.

"Andy, you know her, do you think we were able to keep her down for long? Ford was only able to get her to rest longer because he threatened to call you." Amir said, a twist of humour to his voice. "She’s doing better. Rose has been with her, and so has Jordan. They both decided that they weren’t going to let her push herself too much. She’s going to have to change the way she was living since she’s had the accident. Don’t feel bad, Andy. The Doctor did say it was only a matter of time before her lifestyle up until now caught up with her." Andrew tried to believe Amir, he did.

There was just no way he couldn’t blame himself for something so serious happening to May.

"Well, if that’s the case, all of us should be worried. May worked a high stress job, just like all of us." Maxwell muttered. Thomas laughed.

"Trust me, it was rather humbling to realise that none of us are safe from time and aging." Thomas said. "Least of all someone like May. Ford is taking it in stride, and taking the health regiment that Will gave him seriously as well." Thomas chuckled. "That man...I thought he was soft, but when it comes to May and his family...well, he’s a good man, and that’s all that matters." Thomas sounded impressed and Andrew relaxed slightly hearing that.

If Ford was doing okay, then that would mean that May was doing okay. They should call them after they finished up their call with the Becketts.

"Is there anything else big that we need to know about?" Maxwell asked. After a bit more chatting, it appeared that was it and Maxwell and Andrew who hadn’t said anything of their mating thus far shared a look.

"Oh, by the way," Andrew started casually, and he heard someone inhale sharply on the other side of the phone. It sounded like Ben, and that only made Andrew smirk to himself. "Maxy and I have some news of our own, but we don’t want to take up too much of your time. We do have to call May and the others after this." Andrew played it up, Maxwell giving Andrew a dirty look over his shoulder, but his eyes were warm.

"Yes. We would hate to do that." Maxwell emphasized. "Anyway, Andy and I are now mated. We’ll take more later, alright? Love you!"

"What?!"

"Are you seriously hanging up?"

"Go Andy!"

They did seriously hang up, both men falling into laughter, their eyes bright as they did so. It felt good to tell them but to also not dwell in the moment. It wasn’t how Andrew had planned to tell them. He had imagined a more formal setting, probably lunch or dinner, but after all of the news that he had heard...he felt like they needed something like that.

They hadn’t even cracked the surface on what had happened to his father or other family members. Andrew hoped that they didn’t think that Andrew hadn’t noticed that they had skirted the issue. Just giving Andrew the basics and hiding the rest. He would get everything out of them eventually.

After the two took a moment to chuckle at their revelation and respond to the angry texts they got, and a few smooches out of the way, they then tried to call May and Ford. May picked up on the second ring.

"Hello? Andy? Maxy? Are you back home? You said that you landed safely, I just wanted to make sure you’re actually home." May’s voice didn’t sound different in the slightest and Andrew felt his chest ache.

"We’re home. Safe and sound. Not even turbulence was that bad coming in, and the house looks good because Maxy is smart and had someone come in to help keep the house clean." Andrew said, squeezing Maxwell in his arms tightly. "How were you guys while we were gone? Is everything okay? How is Fern doing?" Andrew asked, prodding, careful. He didn’t want to come out of the gate swinging saying that he had heard what had happened.

Maxwell squeezed Andrew’s arm back, rubbing his arm gently.

"Oh, we’re just fine. Fern’s doing great, hitting all the milestones. The Doctors are happy with their development. Rose and Jordan have come to stay with us for a short while, just because they missed us. You know, very calm." May was playing it off calmly. Being very nonchalant about it.

Andrew could feel his anger rising, knowing that May was lying to him. He didn’t think that was something that May would do to him, but here she was, lying to Andrew. At least, that was what he was feeling. He was getting ready to call her out when May let out an exhausted sigh.

"No, sorry. That’s not true. I’m sorry Andy, I lied. I just...don’t want to worry either you or Maxy with my own problems when you’ve just come back from your honeymoon."

"You’re worrying us more if you don’t tell us." Maxwell spoke up softly. "We just got off the phone with my parents, Amir and Ben and they let us know you collapsed. May, you shouldn’t have even tried to hide it from us." Maxwell sounded more like he was scolding her more than anything else and Andrew knew that would be embarrassing enough for her.

May let out a heavy sigh.

"What are you sighing for? Oh! You’re on the phone! Who is it?" Rose’s voice could be heard over the phone and May let out a chuckle.

"The lovebirds are back from their honeymoon and I’ve been ratted out immediately." May admitted begrudgingly. Rose let out a soft gasp.

"Oh! Andy and Maxy! How was the honeymoon, you two? I’ll have to go tell Jordan and Dad personally since we just put Fern down for the night. And Mom, there was no way you were getting away with it. I warned you, and Dad warned you that Andy was going to sniff it out. He always does when someone is injured." Rose said pointedly. May’s responding laughter told Andrew that she knew that as well.

"I know." She said bitterly. "I realised as soon as the words left my mouth but I just couldn’t seem to stop myself from lying about how I was fine." May admitted. Andrew felt the tension leave his shoulders, Maxwell’s hand patting Andrew’s arm for comfort still.

"As long as you realise that you can’t hide this from us. You’re getting treated at our hospital, May. Andrew’s studying to become a Doctor. No one was going to keep this from us, especially since Andrew can sense these things." Maxwell defended Andrew, and Andrew felt warm that Maxwell was in his corner.

"Are you doing alright? Actually? I heard you fainted and it’s related to blood pressure?" Andrew asked. May chuckled while Rose ran off to let the rest of the house know that Andrew and Maxwell were on the phone. During that time, May told them about what had happened.

It was a miracle that they had caught it. Because May had fainted at the prison there were medics nearby. May had thought that maybe it was related to the fact that her rut was just around the corner but when they took her blood pressure, that was when everything got serious.

May had high blood pressure. Diagnosed, confirmed at this point. Andrew felt his face grow grim as he heard her words, knowing how dangerous it was to have it. May knew that she was going to have to change her lifestyle a bit.

May did leave a rather healthy lifestyle comparatively, but she was going to have to try harder. More exercise, cleaner eating, taking the medication that she was prescribed. The big one was stress, and May just laughed at that. She was still working, but that was because she hadn’t fully found someone who she could train to replace her. The company knew that she wanted to retire but she was too important to just let go.

With this medical situation that happened, her company was on high alert. They were worried for her health and making any concessions that they could to accommodate her. May was very appreciative that they were showing her this level of care when they could have tried to shirk off their duty to her.

Andrew would have been furious if they had attempted to do that, given that they probably played a large role in why she had fainted, but he knew that he wouldn’t be the only one who felt that way.

Ford, who came in while she was explaining the situation, was calm when he spoke. Careful. Collected. Enraged. Andrew hadn’t seen this side of him in a long time, and so that was how Andrew knew he didn’t have to worry. If they had attempted to remove May from the company, Ford would have dealt with it himself. No one disrespected his wife and got away with it.

Andrew was glad to hear that the numbers were a lot better than when she fainted. That the slight discomfort she had felt without knowing what it was were in fact, heart attacks and now she was getting treatment for that.

Andrew was just glad that he wasn’t about to lose another mother figure so soon after everything felt like it was taking a drastic turn for the good.

"The trip was good, though?" May’s soft words washed over Andrew, and he could tell this was her throwing out a towel. She was done talking about herself, and she needed a break. Andrew chuckled.

"The trip was good. Maxy and I decided to bond." Andrew said, dropping the bomb. Rose gasped so loud that she then cursed, scrambling away to tend to her child she’d woken up. Maxwell chuckled, his heat in Andrew’s arm comforting.
