Brooklyn stood at the threshold, wearing a sharp gray suit, her yellowblonde hair pulled into a tight bun, her eyes blazing with a wit that cut through the room like a blade.

Mr. Caldwell, his balding head glistening with a sudden sheen of sweat, stood, his fists clenched on the oak table.

The two agents, Mr. Ellis and Ms. Vaughn, sat poised but alert. Vaughn's hand was just about to unlock the briefcases.

The other associates shifted uncomfortably, their eyes darting between Brooklyn and Caldwell, sensing a storm about to break.

"And what are you doing here, Miss Baker?" Caldwell asked. "You've got no say in this. You're just the PR manager, so stick to your press releases and leave the real business to us."

He looked at her like she was scum. "I bet you don't even know where Steele is either. He's a terrible CEO, if it's not his obsession with Bitcoins, it's his constant traveling to various places and completely abandoning the company."

"Abandoning the company?" Brooklyn's lips curled into a sharp smile, arms folded. "You're a hysterical old man, Caldwell, so predictable too."

"Is that why you want to sell out Darren's company stocks while he's away? How do you think it'll look when I let the world know you secretly sold shares behind his back?"

"What do you think the press would say?" she teased. " 'Caldwell betrays Steele Investments for quick cash.' Good luck explaining that to your investors."

Her voice dripped with confident sarcasm, her eyes locking onto his, daring him to push further.

The room fell silent, the associates exchanging nervous glances, their earlier enthusiasm for the deal wavering under her gaze.

Caldwell slammed his hand on the table, his jowls trembling with fury. "They're our shares, woman! We can do whatever we want! You think you can scare us with your little threats? This company's better off without Darren's reckless gambles!"

His voice echoed off the glass walls, but his bravado faltered as he noticed Ms. Hargrove's frown deepen, her pen tapping slower, doubt creeping into her expression.

The male agent, Ellis, cleared his throat, his voice smooth and immaculate. "Ms. Baker, with all due respect, we represent a legitimate consortium of investors. Our offer is above board, fully compliant with market regulations."

He turned to the sponsors. "The shareholders here are exercising their legal rights to liquidate assets at a premium. Our client is persistent in pursuing opportunities that benefit all parties. Surely you understand the fluidity of business?"

Brooklyn laughed, a sharp, melodic sound that cut through their polished rhetoric like glass shattering. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"Persistent, huh? You want to see persistent? Wait until Darren hears about this little stunt. He'll persistently haunt all of you; legally, financially, and personally.

"You think you can sneak into his company while he's away and gut it like vultures?"

She turned to Caldwell, her gaze narrowing with disdain. "And you, Caldwell. I'm not surprised you're leading this charge. But I didn't expect you'd listen to me, and that's why I brought someone you can't ignore."

The door swung open with a deliberate creak, and Jonathan Vance strode in, his tall frame commanding the room like a general entering a battlefield.

The dreadful, cunning lawyer scanned the group with his blue eyes, then allowed for a threatening smile to light up his manly face.

"Hello, Caldwell," he said assuredly. "I hear you're trying to sell stocks that don't belong to you."

Caldwell's face drained of color, his sweat now beading visibly on his forehead, his hands fidgeting with a pen that slipped from his grasp.

He knew how seriously Jonathan Vance took Darren's company. He protected it with a ferocity that matched Darren's own ambition.

The associates froze, their confidence crumbling under Vance's presence, while Ellis and Vaughn exchanged a quick, uneasy glance.

Ellis moved to speak first, trying to maintain his smooth tone. "Mr. Vance, this is a legitimate transaction. The shareholders have every right to sell their holdings under the company's bylaws. My client has conducted due diligence, and our offer complies with all SEC regulations. We're simply facilitating—"

Vance cut him off with a raised hand, his smirk sharp enough to draw blood. "Shareholders? Spare me the boilerplate, you robot. These aren't shareholders, they're sponsors, business associates who just happen to own stocks. They do not have legitimate power to sell them and you know that."

He looked at Caldwell. "You know that too, Mr. Caldwell."

He returned to the agent. "I've seen this playbook many times before. Let's start with the bylaws you're so fond of. Article 7, Section 3: Any sale of shares exceeding 5% of total outstanding stock requires board approval or direct authorization from the CEO, my client, Darren Steele."

"Now, he's away, and I'm damn sure he didn't sign off on any of this. You're operating on bad faith, and it's worthy of a lawsuit."

Ellis's jaw tightened, his earlier charm evaporating as he gripped his briefcase, frustration etching lines into his face. "This is absurd. We're within our rights to negotiate—"

"Shut up and don't make this worse for you and your so-called clients," Vance snapped, his voice now a low growl. "You're not negotiating; you're poaching. And you're doing it on company property without authorization.

"You're trespassing, my friends. I suggest you pack up your glossy proposals and leave before I have security escort you out… or worse, file an injunction by Monday that freezes every account tied to Morris & The Scottish Capital. If such a thing even exists."

The two agents glanced at each other, fear now plastered all over their faces.

"Let's get out of here!"

They took their briefcases and almost ran out.

Vance, a disgusted look on his face, turned to the associates.

"As for you lot… I'd say count your days. I would cancel your contracts with this company myself for this stunt, but that's Darren's call. And trust me, when he gets back, he'll probably do more than fire you."

He paused, fixing his gaze on Caldwell, who was now visibly trembling, his shirt collar damp with sweat.

"Caldwell. Because of that pipeline deal in Alberta, your oil company's been limping along, hasn't it?? It's only alive because of Darren's funding. One call from him, and your creditors pull the plug. Your board will have you out by Christmas."

Caldwell's eyes widened with realization and fear.

This was a mistake. It was a huge mistake.

Vance said nothing more. He turned on his heel and strode out, leaving a stunned silence in his wake.

All the associates sat frozen, terrified.

Brooklyn smirked, her wit undimmed as she followed Vance out, her heels clicking on the polished floor.

As she reached the hallway, she pulled out her phone and dialed Darren's phone.

Back at the resort, Darren stirred in his bed, the sheets tangled around his waist. He could hear laughter from the women downstairs, they were still lounged by the pool.

He looked down on the bed, Penny was fast asleep. A smile touched his face.

He stretched, and after that, reached for his phone on the nightstand.

The screen lit up with Brooklyn's name, and he answered, his voice still rough with sleep. "Brooklyn? What's up?"

Brooklyn told him what just happened.

Darren's eyes narrowed.
