Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Teasing Chloe

The situation on the Bund erupted into chaos once again.

The water rippled with some ominous energy, giving a clear indication that a new foe, more menacing than the Golden Ironclad Crab, had arrived.

The folk mages, their confidence already faltering, fled for their lives. "Run! This time it is a monarch-level demon!"

"We can’t fight this - we all will die here!"

Even Logan Quinn, who had been rallying the mages earlier, hesitated. Clenched fists revealed the turmoil inside him: to fight or not, knowing very well that it would be futile.

In the ensuing chaos, the crowd began to scatter; some headed toward the direction of the city, while others abandoned their posts completely.

Surrounded by chaos, Luke stepped out of the contract space, his body returning to that of a human. His sharp gaze swept over that river, now more grim.

"Let’s go," he ordered, his tone brooking no dissent.

Marissa and Zoe did not hesitate, following him at once, leaving Tina, on the other hand, frozen with tears in her eyes.

"Luke!" she cried out, running to him. Her small fists pounded against his chest as tears streamed down her face. "Why did you jump into the river? Do you know how scared I was? You could’ve died!"

Luke blinked, momentarily taken aback by her outburst.

"It’s... complicated," he said, his tone softening. "I had to take care of the kraken before it reached the city."

"You’re not invincible!" Tina retorted, her voice cracking. "Promise me you won’t do something that stupid again!"

Luke sighed, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Alright, I promise. No more river dives."

Marissa cleared her throat, cutting through the emotional moment. "Luke, we need to go. The situation is escalating."

Luke nodded. "Let’s head to Celestial Academy. It’s the safest place right now."

As the group began their retreat, a brilliant light erupted over the river.

A massive sword of radiant energy descended from the sky, its blade cleaving the river in two and exposing the depths below.

"Super Magic—Light Judgment: Heavenly Blessing Sword!"

The sheer power of the spell was enough to send shockwaves across the battlefield. The river water receded, revealing the massive form of the demon hiding beneath the surface.

It was a Nether Prawn, an orthodox monarch-level kraken. Its massive, blue-black body spanned over 100 meters, with claws that radiated a fearsome energy. Parasites clung to its shell, feeding off its flesh in grotesque symbiosis.

Luke’s jaw tightened. "So, that’s the real threat..."

The Nether Prawn let out a deafening roar as it broke free from the riverbed, its monstrous claws swinging with devastating force.

High above, two super-tier mages launched a coordinated assault. Another light-based spell lit up the sky, while a barrage of thunder halberds rained down on the kraken.

The Nether Prawn retaliated with a powerful swipe of its claw, locking the mages in a spatial grip that made escape impossible.

Just as the battle seemed to reach a fever pitch, reinforcements arrived in the form of a military battalion.

Luke’s sharp eyes picked out a familiar figure among the soldiers—a petite woman with short hair and a commanding presence.

Her uniform, though impeccably neat, couldn’t mask the sheer strength emanating from her. Luke’s gaze dropped slightly, a smirk forming on his lips.

"Well, well... if it isn’t Chloe Carter. Always dressed to impress."

"Hi Chloe, here we go again."

Luke flashed Chole a wide grin, his teeth glistening with an eerie brilliance under the paltry light illuminating his face. He waved at her.

Though his tone was playfully familiar in the mockery sense, with the future mother of his son in the air, he immediately switched to a somewhat friendly, if not mischievous, demeanor.

"Luke!"

Chloe’s voice was sharp as she lit up, spells already forming across her particularly pretty hands. Smoldering with the embers of her resentment, she beckoned forth a flame.

A flash of memory: she saw themselves at Snowpeak Station, him doing a shameless dance while she got abominably toasted. Not a breath of swallowed-in frustration remained; it was a personal thing.

"What the hell are you doing here?" she asked.

Luke laughed, unrepentant in the face of her angry tone. "Why wouldn’t I be? This is just the gate of the Bund; someone must be there to see it through."

As he spoke, he released a fierce punch with one hand, launching a fiery arc across the river. The flames sped forward like a tidal wave, consuming almost all the Krakens. They died with neither a scream nor a swan song, their charred carcasses tumbling to the depths.

Chloe stood gazing, stunned. The sheer devastation wrought by that attack almost bereft her of speech. Slowly, though, she turned towards Luke, the pull of his power impossible for her to ignore.

Her eyes narrowed, now keenly observant, and she saw the almost imperceptible withdrawing aura surrounding him. Was he..."absorbing the essence of the fallen Krakens?"

Chloe tried to dismiss that thought, turning back to study the flames; what she felt of its presence literally changed her face from confounded disbelief to some incredulity.

"A top-tier spirit seed?" she whispered to herself and then gasped. "No, it’s actually a soul seed! He has a soul seed?! How is that possible?"

Her incredulity could almost be touched! She had taken months putting her life on the line for military merit enough to obtain a Spirit Seed, and only to find Luke, with hardly two months in training, brandishing a Soul Seed.

"Chloe," Luke interrupted her train of thought, his voice mock-serious, suggestive. "I got a suggestion for you."

"Oh?" her brows knitted into a frown.

"For the next year or so, consider taking in some more food." He gestured vaguely as if it lacked importance elsewhere. "It could improve your... balance. It might save you some broken ribs when I win our next match."

Rage ignited in her again. "You—!"
