Chapter 28: Chapter 27: Wants to Capture and Roast Me

In her previous life, everything Si Shuo learned was of a tranquil nature, meant to cultivate her temperament and pass the time.

She didn’t have much talent for painting. While she could render things with precision, her work lacked the vibrancy and emotional impact prized in the art world.

The truth was, she had been trapped in a tiny space. Everything she knew came from others’ words, from books, and from television. Without experiencing anything firsthand, how could her horizons ever be broad, or her mind ever be expansive?

But now, this little skill was enough to get a message to Zhi Le.

Si Shuo thought for a moment, eyebrow pencil in hand, then began to draw the events that occurred after Zhi Le had left. One picture depicted her daily life, another showed Ji Liang’s arrival, a third illustrated the Rogue Beasts’ attack and her capture, and the final one showed her escape and her encounter with Xu Chi.

Lastly, she drew a smiley face with a hand stroking the Beast Mark, indicating that she was waiting for him.

Si Shuo tied the drawings together with a strand of dry grass and placed them into her space.

She gently stroked the Beast Mark on her wrist...

The Snow Leopard running through the jungle suddenly skidded to a halt. His heart, which had been pounding with anxiety and fear, began to slow.

He took a deep breath and, full of hope, opened his space, discovering the stack of drawings.

Zhi Le lowered his gaze, studying them slowly. With each image, he desperately tried to imagine her telling him the full story.

Si Shuo had used a simple, comic-strip style. A few strokes were all it took to convey her meaning vividly and clearly.

Seeing that she was safe for the moment, Zhi Le still didn’t dare to relax. He placed some fruit into his space for her, then transformed back into a Snow Leopard and sprinted in the direction he could sense her.

Not long after Si Shuo had placed the drawings into her space, Xu Chi returned, carrying a long eared rabbit, a bamboo rat, a striped chicken, and a half-grown piglet.

He was even dragging some firewood behind him!

Xu Chi cleared a patch of ground with his bare hands, pulling up all the weeds. Then, using a hand drill to make fire, he had a bonfire blazing within a minute or two.

Si Shuo could only stare, dumbfounded at his speed and efficiency.

Xu Chi dressed the game, placed the meat on large leaves, and began roasting each piece in silence.

Once the rabbit was cooked, he tore off a hind leg and offered it to her.

Si Shuo quickly took it, but the freshly roasted meat was scorching hot, and she instinctively tossed it away.

Xu Chi caught it and placed the meat on a leaf. Seeing several blisters immediately form on her fair hand, he pursed his lips, pulled her over to the riverbank, and plunged her hand into the water.

The cool water soothed the burning on her fingertips, and Si Shuo let out a soft sigh.

"Sorry," he said, his gaze lowered.

"It’s nothing. I was just too impatient and forgot how hot freshly roasted meat can be," Si Shuo said, shaking her head with a smile. Seeing that he was still holding her hand down, she added helplessly, "Xu Chi, you can let go. I can keep it in the water myself."

Xu Chi nodded, let go, and returned to roasting the meat.

Si Shuo discreetly activated her superpower, focusing it on her fingertips. In just ten or twenty seconds, the blisters vanished, and the pain disappeared along with them.

Still, she pretended to soak it for another five or six minutes before taking her hand out and giving it a shake. "Good thing I put it in the water so quickly. The blisters didn’t even form."

Xu Chi glanced at her hand, then handed her the rabbit leg, which was now skewered on a stick.

Si Shuo didn’t hesitate. She thanked him, took it, and started gnawing on it.

The meat on the long eared rabbit’s hind leg was firm and flavorful, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Most importantly, this male really knew what he was doing. She didn’t know what he’d sprinkled on it, but the roasted meat had no gamey smell at all. Instead, it carried a pleasant, herbal fragrance. He had even brushed a layer of honey on the outside.

’Who could possibly resist honey-glazed barbecue?’

The only problem was that the long eared rabbit’s leg was huge; it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say she had to hoist it to her mouth. She hadn’t even finished a fifth of it.

Xu Chi, on the other hand, had a massive appetite. He left a leg from each animal for Si Shuo and devoured the rest himself!

Si Shuo marveled silently to herself once again. ’The males have such enormous appetites. No wonder the Beastmen are constantly on the move gathering food as soon as the winter snow and ice melt.’

After they finished eating, Xu Chi went back into the forest, returning with a pouch of Beast Skins filled with fruit.

Si Shuo was munching on a piece of fruit, but she was so sleepy she could barely keep her eyes open. Her head bobbed up and down, and just as she was about to fall over, a pair of strong, well-defined hands caught her.

She had used up too much of her stamina, energy, and superpower today, and now she just couldn’t hold on any longer.

Xu Chi watched her struggle to force her eyes open, then crouched in front of her. "I’ll carry you."

Si Shuo’s brain felt completely overloaded, and her guard against him wasn’t particularly high to begin with. After a moment of hesitation, she wrapped her arms around his neck and allowed herself to be lifted onto his back.

Xu Chi didn’t look exceptionally burly, but his back still gave her a sense of security, one that could ward off any danger.

She rested her head against him and fell asleep in no time.

Supporting her with one arm, Xu Chi gathered their things with the other, then leaped through the trees with her on his back.

’The little female is so frail,’ he thought. ’I can barely feel her weight. And she’s so soft and delicate, not like the hard, coarse males.’

’It’s just... her scent isn’t very pleasant. Ever since I found her, I haven’t been breathing through my nose, just my mouth...’

Si Shuo had always been in the habit of taking an afternoon nap; it was a routine she had followed for years without fail.

Her naps weren’t long, though—only about an hour.

When she opened her eyes, she thought for a moment she was riding an electric scooter. The scenery was whizzing past, her hair streaming behind her like Qiao Feng’s.

Si Shuo subconsciously nuzzled her head against her "pillow." When the "pillow" stirred beneath her, she woke up instantly, an embarrassed blush creeping onto her cheeks.

She looked up at the sun; it had shifted much further to the west. At least an hour must have passed.

"Xu Chi, you haven’t been running this whole time with me on your back, have you?" ’At thirty miles an hour, no less!’

Xu Chi grunted an affirmative. "The tribe is far. We have to get there before sunset."

Si Shuo’s mouth twitched. ’If he wasn’t carrying me,’ she thought, ’at my pace, wouldn’t this take two or three days?’

She brazenly stayed put, not daring to suggest he rest if he was tired. After all, there was a fundamental difference between climbing onto his back in a sleepy stupor and asking for a ride just to be lazy.

’At least I’m not *that* shameless!’

"Xu Chi, why would your Beast Form cause trouble?" Si Shuo couldn’t help but ask.

She was incredibly curious about what kind of Beastman he was. He seemed to lack any trace of wildness or animal instinct, which made her subconsciously treat him like a normal person who just happened to be strong, fast, and have a huge appetite.

"It’s rare. If the tribesmen find out, they’ll try to capture me."

’Doesn’t that sound a bit like the act I just put on?’

The more he hedged, the more curious Si Shuo became. ’This is exactly what they mean by curiosity killed the cat!’

And right now, she was that cat.

"Can’t you give me a little hint? For example, what color are you?"

"The color of my hair."

’Wow, such an honest answer,’ she thought wryly.

Just as Si Shuo was trying to dig for more secrets, the shriek of the Crowned Eagle Beastman echoed from the sky once more.

"This is bad! Xu Chi, we have to hide, quickly!" Si Shuo’s expression changed as she patted his shoulder urgently. "That Crowned Eagle Beastman wants to catch me and eat me! He’s a Level 4 Beastman, a whole level higher than you." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

’It’s not just one level, it’s a whole color grade higher. That’s a tenfold power difference!’

Xu Chi stopped and looked up. But in those few seconds of delay, the Crowned Eagle Beastman was already diving toward them...
