Chapter 166 -161: The Sewer

Black Mud, a Ground Type Pet Beast, is entirely covered in black soil. Due to its black body, the whites of its eyes and its teeth are exceptionally bright.

Its species’ evolutionary limit is that of a High Level Pet Beast, which, in theory, should mean not many Beast Tamers would want to make a contract with it. Yet, in reality, a significant number of Beast Tamers contract with it every year.

Because it’s easy to keep alive, normally satiating its hunger by eating soil.

Therefore, many Beast Tamers from less affluent families choose to make a contract with it, while a small portion of Beast Tamers are attracted by its special abilities.

Independent space and mud liquefaction.

The former means that anything swallowed by Black Mud can be stored inside its body without any damage, provided it doesn’t actively absorb it, and the latter allows its body to liquefy into mud, meaning it can squeeze into any crack or crevice.

These two abilities combined make it a leading contender in the theft world.

“Wake up,” Qiao Sang said, having confirmed that the dark and slippery Pet Beast in his hand was Black Mud. He shook it by the handle, trying to wake it up.

Seeing no response, he pinched the flesh on its face.

Black Mud remained as responsive as a pool of sludge.

It seemed he couldn’t count on it…

Qiao Sang immediately chose not to waste any more time and turned to Fang Sisi, “There should be a female NPC below us, right? See if she’s inside,” he reminded her.

Although she was eager to rush off and find Yaobao, the eeriness of the situation, coupled with the fact that she only had Xiao Xunbao, a Treasure-seeking Ghost that had just turned a month old, naturally made her prefer caution.

“Okay…” Fang Sisi snapped back to reality, knocked on the ground twice more and loudly asked, “Is anyone down there?”

No one responded to her.

“Hello, is anyone there?”

Still no movement.

Fang Sisi turned back, shook her head, and said, “It seems there’s no one inside, let’s keep moving.”

“Wait,” Qiao Sang said.

“What…” Fang Sisi’s words caught in her throat, and she fell back in horror, sitting on the ground and scrambling back several meters on her hands.

Qiao Sang casually tapped above his head, and a grey and yellow Pet Beast without legs suddenly appeared above her.

A Spectral-type Pet!

Fang Sisi’s heart raced as she stared wide-eyed. She wasn’t afraid of this secret room because she was fully aware of all its horror settings and acquainted with some NPCs.

But that didn’t mean she wasn’t scared!

The Spectral-type Pet Beast that appeared above Qiao Sang’s head was definitely not an NPC from this secret room!

The unexpected appearance of the Spectral-type Pet Beast, the unease of not being able to summon the Cotton Caterpillar, and the terrifying atmosphere around her made Fang Sisi’s heart leap to her throat.

It was at this moment that Qiao Sang said, “Xun Xun, go down and have a look.”

“Xun~”

Xiao Xunbao nodded and floated under the stone slab.

Fang Sisi was dumbfounded, momentarily forgetting how to think. What was that?

Xiao Xunbao?

Treasure-seeking Ghost?!

That’s right, this Spectral-type Pet Beast resembled a Treasure-seeking Ghost…

But why could Qiao Sang command it?!

Fang Sisi swallowed her saliva, looking at Qiao Sang with complex emotions, “This Treasure-seeking Ghost is?”

“My Pet Beast,” Qiao Sang said, looking at Fang Sisi with a moment of surprise. “Why did you run so far away?”

Fang Sisi: “…”

You tell me why!

“Treasure-seeking Ghost, your Pet Beast?” Fang Sisi incredulously asked for confirmation.

“Yeah.”

“You’ve contracted with two Pet Beasts?!” Fang Sisi’s voice rose with astonishment.

“Right, I know you want to praise me, but now’s not the time for that, finding Yaobao and Cotton Caterpillar is what’s important,” Qiao Sang said calmly.

Fang Sisi: “…”

She didn’t feel like talking anymore.

Soon, Xiao Xunbao floated back out from the stone slab.

“Xun.”

“Xun Xun.” Xiao Xunbao approached its Beast Tamer and began to gesture.

“You’re saying she’s lying on the ground with her eyes closed?” Qiao Sang asked.

“Xun.” Xiao Xunbao nodded.

Qiao Sang fell silent for two seconds, then continued, “Is she still alive?”

Fang Sisi: “!!!”

Damn! Why would you suddenly ask such a scary question!

“Xun.”

Xiao Xunbao nodded.

Fang Sisi let out a sigh of relief beside him, and thought to herself, good, good…

The two headed toward the prop room that was almost completely burnt down not far away. It was the house that NPC No.2 had run out of and also the necessary passage to the second level.

The house was nearly burnt down, but the passage was intact.

Fang Sisi led the way with a flashlight, while Qiao Sang followed close behind, carrying the Cotton Caterpillar.

The Cotton Caterpillar wasn’t heavy, and Pet Beasts recovered much faster than humans. Thinking that it might wake up at any moment, Qiao Sang decided to carry it with her.

“We’re here.” Fang Sisi stopped beside a wall.

Qiao Sang looked over and saw Fang Sisi fumbling on the wall, and then suddenly the stone slab on the ground began to move.

It seemed to get stuck halfway through moving.

Seeing this, Qiao Sang stepped forward, placed her phone on the ground, then with her left hand holding the Cotton Caterpillar and her right hand, she lifted the obstacle and tossed it aside.

“Hiss…” Fang Sisi inhaled sharply watching Qiao Sang’s action.

“What’s wrong?” Qiao Sang asked, picking up her phone.

“Nothing, let’s hurry on,” Fang Sisi responded, casting an admiring glance at Qiao Sang before hurriedly descending into the passage.

Qiao Sang sensed something was off about Fang Sisi but did not inquire further and quickly followed her down.

Xiao Xunbao was the last to move.

It didn’t immediately go down the passage but floated over to the obstacle that its Beast Tamer had thrown aside, blinked a couple of times, and only then did it drift into the passage.

Just as Xiao Xunbao disappeared at the entrance to the passage, the stone slab that had originally opened slowly closed again.

After crawling through the passage,

Qiao Sang shone her phone ahead and discovered that the layout inside was actually that of an underground sewer.

Before she even had a chance to look around properly, Fang Sisi suddenly spoke up, “Do you know what that thing you just tossed was?”

Although not really interested, Qiao Sang courteously took up the conversation, “What was it?”

“A Masquerade Specter, the boss of the first level NPCs. Only by defeating it can one enter the second level,” Fang Sisi said, looking at Qiao Sang with admiration in her eyes.

Her former deskmate was simply too cool! Throwing a Spectral-type Pet as if it were no different than tossing a rag, without even a change in expression!

Such courage! Such boldness!

No wonder she dared to contract with a Fire Attribute Beast and Spectral-type Pet first thing.

Qiao Sang was stunned for a moment, “You’re saying that was a Masquerade Specter?”

“Right.” Fang Sisi nodded.

Qiao Sang fell silent for a while, no wonder it felt so strange to the touch…

But how come it was unconscious? Was it because of Yaobao’s Mars Rain, or was there another reason?

While Qiao Sang was pondering, a sound similar to a baby’s cry suddenly came from the nearby sewer, followed by a pair of hands covered in red liquid reaching out of the water.

Since the hands emerged at the water surface behind Qiao Sang and Fang Sisi, they did not see them immediately.

Xiao Xunbao saw them.

It floated over to the hand, tilting its head curiously for a look, then reached out its paw and yanked the red liquid covered hand out of the sewer, and sniffed it with its nose up close.

“Xun…”

The next second, Xiao Xunbao looked disgustedly and tossed the hand back into the sewer.

The hand: “???”
