Chapter 626: Extra Two: Controllable Range Target Lock Ten_1

Chen Gang, in the end, couldn’t rest easy. He took three days off from school, bought a train ticket, stood for six hours, and ran to city S to find Li Duo.

Li Duo was somewhat surprised when he saw Chen Gang.

"I’d like to talk with you, can I?" Chen Gang stated clearly and concisely.

Li Duo took Chen Gang to a small restaurant near the military camp.

Chen Gang’s first sentence was: "Jiujiu is a good girl, you should treat her well."

Li Duo raised his eyebrows in confusion, not understanding why Chen Gang would say this.

Chen Gang spoke softly: "Jiujiu had a rough childhood. It was us, the Chen family, who wronged her. Yet, she was sensible. When she was little, she was too short to reach the stove. My fourth sister-in-law had her cooking and washing dishes by standing on a stool, she tried hard to cook, her fingers burned until they were blistered. Every time I returned from the fields and saw the blisters on Jiujiu’s hands, I thought, how good it would be if Jiujiu were not my sister, if she had not been born into my family? I always hated that I couldn’t grow up faster, that I couldn’t protect her..."

Chen Gang patiently talked about Jiujiu’s experiences in the Chen family, how Gu Xiaobei took Jiujiu away, how Jiujiu returned to the Jin family, he spoke about each event in detail and with seriousness.

Li Duo also listened attentively, seemingly picturing a little girl living in constant fear.

After Chen Gang finished speaking, he gave a bitter smile: "I know that coming to see you today is abrupt. However, knowing Jiujiu’s character, I fear she’ll keep her worries to herself all her life. Do you know? She likes you."

Li Duo was a little surprised, Jiujiu liked him too!

Chen Gang continued, "I’m sorry, I’m being selfish. I know that just because Jiujiu likes you, doesn’t mean I can force you to like her, or to be responsible for her. But seeing her unhappy makes me uneasy about my trip to the Tibetan area."

Li Duo took a sip of his tea: "You are going to the Tibetan area because of Jiujiu?"

Chen Gang did not deny it, nodding and saying: "Yes, if Jiujiu didn’t like you, I would have waited for her to graduate, then marry her, so she could live without being wronged for the rest of her life."

Li Duo nodded slightly: "Rest assured and work in the Tibetan area."

Chen Gang was stunned; he thought he had to be like an overbearing parent and convince Li Duo to accept Jiujiu. He regarded this as the last thing he could do for Jiujiu, even if it was in the wrong way. He didn’t expect Li Duo would give him such a reassurance.

When Chen Gang left, he didn’t tell Jiujiu. He told Gu Xiaobei that after he arrived in the Tibetan area, he would personally write a letter to Jiujiu, telling her that he had arrived.

Li Duo watched Jiujiu, snapped back from his memories, Jiujiu was lucky to have such a good brother.

Gu Xiaobei saw the way Li Duo was looking at Jiujiu, warmly, like a man looks at a woman.

Lu Zhanguo saw Jiujiu’s reddened eyes and thought she was upset because she was talking about past things with Gu Xiaobei. He suggested to Gu Xiaobei, "Let’s go out for dinner."

Gu Xiaobei looked at Jiujiu and Li Duo and thought, "I don’t know what is good to eat in S city. Do you know, Li Duo?"

Li Duo looked at Jiujiu and, with a smile, said, "Let’s eat on Halal Street. There’s a restaurant there that serves really good spicy lamb feet."

Gu Xiaobei felt relieved and smiled. What Li Duo mentioned was exactly what Jiujiu liked to eat.

When Jiujiu was eating, she seemed to bury her head all the way in the bowl, making Gu Xiaobei sigh a few times.

After dinner, Gu Xiaobei suggested that they all take a walk. Xiaopang held his father in one hand and his mother in the other, hopping and jumping forward.

Li Duo and Jiujiu walked side by side behind them.

Li Duo looked at Jiujiu, whose head was almost buried in her chest, and asked, "Are you busy with your studies?"

"Not busy," Jiujiu hummed.

"Are you going to be a teacher in the provincial capital after graduation?"

Jiujiu shook her head: "I want to take the graduate exam at my school." That way, she could stay in this city for a few more years, close to Li Duo. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Li Duo looked at the lowered crown of Jiujiu’s head and said softly, "Taking the graduate exam is also good."

Gu Xiaobei secretly looked back at Li Duo and Jiujiu and asked Lu Zhanguo, "What do you think of Jiujiu and Li Duo?"

Lu Zhanguo was somewhat puzzled, "The two of them? How come? Isn’t there quite an age gap?"

Gu Xiaobei snorted, "Jiujiu and Li Duo are only nine years apart. You don’t think about how many years older you are than me."

Lu Zhanguo fell silent.

Xiaopang said to Gu Xiaobei with a grinning smile, "Mom, are you saying that Brother Li Duo is Brother-in-law Jiujiu?"

Gu Xiaobei laughed and said, "You know a lot, how do you know everything?"

Xiaopang proudly replied, "Brother Chen Gang told me when he was at our house. He said that from now on, I should call Brother Li Duo, and not Uncle anymore."

Gu Xiaobei was taken aback and asked Xiaopang, "Did Brother Chen Gang say anything else?"

"Brother Chen Gang said, if Sister Jiujiu is unhappy, I must write him a letter," Xiaopang replied triumphantly.

Gu Xiaobei felt that Chen Gang must have entrusted the wrong person – surely Mo Wang could be more reliable as a mole than Xiaopang?

Lu Zhanguo suddenly said, "I thought Jiujiu would marry Chen Gang."

"The kids are growing up, they have their own ideas, huh? You think in a few years it’ll be time to worry about Xiaopang and Mo Wang," Gu Xiaobei suddenly said with some regret.

Looking at Xiaopang, Lu Zhanguo said, "Don’t talk about everything in front of the child."

Xiaopang mischievously said, "I know, Sister Guoguo said she wants to marry me when she grows up, so we can always stay together."

Gu Xiaobei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The little girl that Mo Wang had brought back and their one big yard the girl spent her time in whenever she had the chance, got along great with Xiaopang. The two little girls together in the big yard were always up to mischief.

Jiujiu stayed with Gu Xiaobei in the provincial capital for a few more days, and then they went to Capital City together.

They had a very pleasant summer vacation in Capital City.

When they were returning by train from Capital City, they unexpectedly saw Li Duo at the train station.

"Li...Unc...Bro..." Jiujiu was so nervous she didn’t know what to call him.

Li Duo had a bit of a headache, every time Jiujiu saw him, she was so alert that even he was on edge.

"Jiujiu, I’ve called your uncle, telling him that I’m specifically here to pick you up from today’s train. I want to talk to you." Li Duo looked straight at Jiujiu as he spoke.

Jiujiu gasped, taking a step back, her heartbeat suddenly accelerated.

Li Duo, seeing Jiujiu’s uneasy appearance, took a step closer, "Jiujiu, are you afraid of me?"

Jiujiu shook her head, her face flushed a deep red as she took another step back.

"Shall we find a place to sit down and talk?" Li Duo asked, looking intently at Jiujiu.

Jiujiu mechanically nodded her head and followed Li Duo to a quiet spot in the Water Park.

Li Duo sat on the other end of the bench from Jiujiu, who was seated nervously at one end.

Jiujiu felt that as soon as Li Duo sat down, his fresh and natural scent filled her surroundings. Her face flushed and she lowered her head.

Li Duo, looking at the paddle boats on the artificial lake in the distance, spoke in a low voice: "Jiujiu, I want to tell you about my childhood."
