Back to the 70s: My Childhood Sweetheart Spoils Me Rotten-Chapter 764 - 766: Wan Qiweng in Distress
Upon hearing the knock knocking on the door, Wan Qiweng glanced at the several girls snoring away on the berth.
She put down the book in her hands and walked gently to the door, "Who is it."
"Auntie, it’s me, Guangran." Zhao Guangran recognized Wan Qiweng’s voice and knew that Gong Ruini and the others were probably asleep.
Wan Qiweng quickly opened the berth door upon hearing Zhao Guangran’s voice.
"The train stopped at the station earlier, and my brother and I got off to buy some fruit."
"And then we saw some roast chicken that looked good, so we bought a few. Once Ni Zi and the others are awake, let’s go to the next compartment to eat."
Wan Qiweng took the watermelon and peaches. "Okay, I got it. Do you have enough?"
People often say girls are considerate, but actually, the boys in the family are extremely thoughtful, always running out to buy food and drink during the day when the train stops.
Even though traveling in the heat is no fun, their meals have been decent, much better compared to their first trip to Yangcheng.
"Enough, enough, enough, the watermelons are quite nice. We bought several this time, it’s good for Ni Zi and the others to eat more fruit, considering their poor appetite."
Zhao Guangran’s gaze shifted away from Cao Na, noticing that she’s indeed thinner and looking worn out.
Wan Qiweng noticed Zhao Guangran was actually concerned about Cao Na, which was really puzzling and surprising to her.
They always believed that if any couple emerged from this group, it would surely be Gong Ruini and Zhao Guangran. Despite their frequent bickering, their bond was deep.
But how could Zhao Guangran like Cao Na? If Ni Zi found out, who knows how she would react, making Wan Qiweng anxious.
Yet, even in her anxiety, Wan Qiweng couldn’t act out. If she provoked Zhao Guangran, he’d truly disregard everything, and the only one hurt would be Gong Ruini.
"Alright, you go back now," Wan Qiweng was too worried to chat with Zhao Guangran, so she dismissed him.
"What’s going on?" Zhao Guangran was taken aback but contemplated that maybe she didn’t want passersby to see. "Auntie, you eat more too."
After locking the door again, Wan Qiweng sat back down to read but couldn’t focus due to her chaotic thoughts.
"Auntie, what’s wrong?" Gong Ruini had been awake for a while and knew Zhao Guangran brought fruit. She was too lazy to socialize and just pretended to sleep.
Traveling on the train for days and nights felt longer than going to the Northeast, and it was draining, especially in the summer heat adding to her exhaustion and disinterest in socializing.
"Ni Zi, you know.." Seeing Gong Ruini awake, Wan Qiweng couldn’t hold back her questions. She glanced at Cao Na who was sound asleep.
Wan Qiweng stood up and walked to Gong Ruini’s side, "What do you think of Guangran?"
What do you think of Guangran, why suddenly ask this, Gong Ruini had noticed that whether it was Zhao Gang’s or Gong Tao’s couples, even Cai Ming’s couple, they all hoped she’d end up with Zhao Guangran.
The main problem is, Gong Ruini truly has no feelings for Zhao Guangran. Maybe Zhao Guangran seemed smart, but with Zhao Xuran around, he really fell short.
"I think Guangran is nice. Although he’s unreliable sometimes, he is a brother who cares for his sister."
"Ah, just a brother." Wan Qiweng actually wondered if Gong Ruini was too young to understand much.
But seeing Gong Ruini’s naive eyes, Wan Qiweng couldn’t say anything despite her being a high schooler who skipped grades.
"Yes, I hope Brother Guangran marries a sister-in-law who treats me well, so I have someone else who cares for me." Since Wan Qiweng had asked, Gong Ruini shared a bit.
"Besides, Brother Guangran wouldn’t like me; he’d find me too strong-willed." Gong Ruini did some deep reflection, realizing she had been too bold since childhood.
Even wanting to change now wasn’t easy, whether for herself or for the family’s acceptance, as they’d likely suspect she was unwell.
Ni Zi was quite strong-willed, something Wan Qiweng always knew, and Zhao Guangran was someone who valued face; if he merely advised or scolded his sister, he might laugh it off.
But if he told a wife, he’d feel humiliated as a man.
So after much deliberation, "Yes, still better as a sister."
Who knows what kind of guy can see Ni Zi’s goodness, Wan Qiweng became a bit melancholic.
"Yes, the man I marry must cherish me, like Uncle Zhao, Dad, and Uncle." Gong Ruini proudly stated her standards for finding a partner.
Looking at the quirky Gong Ruini, Wan Qiweng thought the girl was still young, and she could wait. Even if not searching from a network with good family background, Wan Qiweng believed she’d find someone who’d treat Ni Zi well.
"Pretty high standards." Whether in the past or now, or even in the future, Wan Qiweng could only say there wouldn’t be many men like those in her family.
Back when she insisted on marrying Cai Ming, many relatives, friends, even close acquaintances mocked her, predicting her marriage as a loss.
But looking at now, Wan Qiweng wouldn’t say her marriage with Cai Ming was exceptional, but at least their feelings were genuine, unlike many friends who just did their own thing.
"Is it high?" Gong Ruini didn’t think her standards were high, because seeing these genuinely loving couples daily, anyone would want to model their partner choice on them.
"If there’s no suitable match, I’d rather not marry."
Wan Qiweng was shocked by Gong Ruini’s seemingly rebellious words. Despite being a capable woman, some thoughts were inherently ingrained. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Hearing Gong Ruini’s audacious statement, "Ni Zi, you shouldn’t think like that. How can you think that, people should get married."
"Otherwise, what about when you’re old."
What about being old? Gong Ruini genuinely didn’t believe it would be hard living in old age; nowadays, it might be despairing living without money, but having money doesn’t mean despair.
"I have my brothers." Gong Ruini was confident that based on her family background, not many sisters-in-law would dislike her.
The brothers, indeed, Wan Qiweng’s initially anxious heart slowly calmed down. She might not be able to convince Gong Ruini, but Zhao Xuran and the others perhaps could advise a bit.
Especially Zhao Xuran, since Ni Zi always listens to him. Right, let Zhao Xuran take the lead.
Wait, is it right to let Zhao Xuran take the lead? Wan Qiweng hesitated.
No matter how sensible Zhao Xuran might be, even knowing much, he hasn’t dated himself. Can he really persuade Ni Zi?
Yet telling the sister-in-law, Wan Qiweng worried it would lead to trouble, as small issues could erupt loudly. Sigh, Wan Qiweng was really distressed.
