Back to the 70s: My Childhood Sweetheart Spoils Me Rotten-Chapter 45 - 44 Blessed Child
Chapter 45: Chapter 44 Blessed Child
Climbing up a few steps, they reached the high platform. As Gong Ruini scanned the area, her heart sank.
Earlier, finding such a great item in the corridor had made Gong Ruini all sorts of excited, hoping there might be even better and more valuable things on the high platform.
However, the high platform was now a mess, with nothing but dust and cluttered furniture.
There was also a fire pit, and Gong Ruini noticed some partially burnt papers on it. It seemed this group had left in a rush; otherwise, they would have watched these papers burn completely.
Zhao Gang looked at the chaotic scene and felt his hopes fall to the bottom of a valley. "Maybe I’m asking for too much."
The Northeast had been liberated for a long time already, but those people would never foolishly ignore the escape routes and had plenty of time to transport things out.
"Wait, is there gold here?" Without a flashlight, Gong Tao followed Zhao Gang’s actions, but he didn’t know exactly what was here, so he didn’t miss out on the good stuff.
"Where?" Hearing the mention of gold, Zhao Gang got excited. Even if there were no treasures, gold would do.
Gong Tao slowly led Gong Ruini to the area where they had questions earlier, scraping away at the surface.
Everyone gasped. "This is a bit ostentatious, isn’t it?"
Gong Ruini was absolutely certain that this place used to be like the treasure trove of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
"Is this table actually made of gold?" Gong Tao found it unbelievable.
"If that’s true, then there’s no reason to leave it behind." Zhao Gang was puzzled. While gold isn’t as valuable as jewelry, it is hard currency and won’t be a problem no matter where you go.
"Maybe they didn’t know it was made of gold?" Gong Tao also found it incredible. "Then, this thing..."
Gong Tao looked at Zhao Gang, indicating what they should do about this.
"Come back at night." Zhao Gang originally thought there would be just a few small items. He never expected that no one had touched the treasure trove, but surprisingly, the small trinkets were missing while this big surprise awaited them.
This meant Zhao Gang wasn’t prepared enough; he needed to go back and prepare.
Moreover, the items here were large and would take quite an effort to carry out, even though few people passed by here. Occasionally, village folks would come.
Either they came to see Zhan Jing for medical treatment, or they needed Zhao Gang to help fix things. If they saw this, how big of a commotion would ensue?
More importantly, the existence of this cave would prove that past rumors were true, making everyone suspect Zhao Gang dug out the treasures.
They might also wonder if Gong Tao and his family’s arrival was Zhao Gang’s deliberate doing, just to find a helper.
In short, Zhao Gang had to be extremely cautious. He couldn’t let his family or Gong Tao’s family get involved.
When the idea of retreat came up, Gong Tao didn’t immediately understand. With so many good things here, was Zhao Gang really planning to hand them over?
Gong Tao didn’t think Zhao Gang would be that selfless.
"We’ll come back tonight to deal with this, it’s not safe now." Zhao Gang took a sweep and saw it was just the two adults and Gong Ruini; as for Zhao Guangran, he squatted at a previous spot, unsure of what he was searching for.
This also gave Zhao Gang some relief. Although Gong Ruini was young, she was tight-lipped, something Zhao Gang found very reassuring.
Coming back at night, Gong Tao immediately understood, "I think it’s better to come back tomorrow to take it."
If their actions tonight were seen by the children, tomorrow many people would come for dinner, and who knows what might slip out.
"Okay." Zhao Gang felt various kinds of reassurance. This tree cave had been there for so long, but nobody ever suspected it, proving people hadn’t doubted here.
If it weren’t for Gong Ruini’s coincidence, who knows when this cave would be discovered.
"Ni Zi, you are truly a blessed child." Zhao Gang excitedly picked up Gong Ruini and headed down towards the entrance.
Even though he didn’t know exactly how much gold was inside, the quantity seemed promising, and Zhao Gang was on the verge of losing his mind with excitement.
All these years, he hunted and sold contraband, grew some greens during the winter to sell, yet never made much money, only saving just over a thousand, with great anxiety.
Now, he could earn a fortune effortlessly, and if Zhao Gang wasn’t excited, there’d truly be something wrong.
Gong Ruini was astonished and couldn’t close her mouth, not expecting that such a fall would put the two families on the fast track to success. Good lord.
Compared to the excitement of the three, Zhao Guangran’s mood wasn’t great. "I haven’t found anything good yet."
"I also want to find the jade pendant." Zhao Guangran cried and refused to go up.
"Not going up? Fine, you stay down there alone." Zhao Gang didn’t indulge the child.
"Brother, I can give my jade to you." Seeing Zhao Guangran constantly crying, Gong Ruini, despite being reluctant about parting with the jade pendant she’d just found, could only offer it up.
"No, that’s your jade, sis." Zhao Guangran was still a child with ethics, knowing that the item was something Gong Ruini found, and he shouldn’t take it away, or he’d be like a bad kid.
"In a few days, I’ll bring you back." Zhao Gang couldn’t resist his son’s pitiful look. "But you can’t tell anyone, or such good things will be gone."
"I know, I know." Zhao Guangran couldn’t bear to tell his pals.
"If they find out, they’ll be envious and want it, and if they don’t find anything good, they’ll say we took it all, and then we’ll be in trouble." Zhao Guangran had heard Zhao Xuran talk about happenings outside, and it scared him greatly.
To Zhao Guangran, everything at home was earned through his parents’ hard work. If bad people knew, they’d report them.
Those people would steal all the good stuff from home, and maybe even his dad would get into trouble. Zhao Guangran didn’t want that to happen.
Zhao Guangran swiftly covered his mouth with his hand, shaking his head repeatedly, "Guangran won’t say, Guangran won’t say."
"Sis can’t say either." Zhao Guangran didn’t forget to remind Gong Ruini, indicating she shouldn’t do anything foolish.
This fellow should manage himself first before worrying about others; he was exerting too much effort on this matter, making Gong Ruini roll her eyes impolitely.
"Ni Zi, did you hear that?" Zhao Guangran didn’t get an answer from Gong Ruini, and asked again, displeased.
"Got it." Gong Ruini replied listlessly, "I won’t say anything."
"Finding good stuff and then talking about it, one would be really stupid." Even if one had a strong urge to show off, betraying oneself was out of question.
"You handle yourself." Zhao Gang really felt defeated by his foolish son, actually worried whether Gong Ruini would betray them, not realizing that he should be more concerned about his son.
There he goes again, getting wronged once more. Zhao Guangran felt utterly helpless.
