Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 111: Danger at the Street Corner
Although both classes of the architecture department followed Su Shuochi and Sheng Shiwu to the cafeteria,
only about ten people genuinely wanted to work with Su Shuochi. These ten fell into two categories.
The first group came from wealthy families. They were worldly, forward-thinking, had their own life goals, and wanted to be trendsetters of the era.
The second group came from families so poor they could barely afford to eat, having to save up their university living stipends to send back home.
They had heard that if they followed Su Shuochi, they would earn a salary while still in university. This was a godsend that could solve their immediate financial problems.
As for the other students, whose families were neither rich nor poor, they felt no pressure to find employment and planned to just go with the flow, waiting for the state to assign them jobs after graduation.
For university students of this era, it wasn’t about whether a major was good or if they were interested in it.
Simply getting into a university was enough. Regardless of the major, admission was equivalent to securing an "iron rice bowl," getting "commodity grain" rations, and being guaranteed allocated housing.
Moreover, most graduates from top-tier universities were assigned to administrative or public institutions. At worst, they could stay on as faculty or return to their hometowns to teach high school.
Su Shuochi was very observant and understood his classmates’ inner thoughts clearly.
He was also easily satisfied. Ten talented people were enough for now. Once they achieved something, more students would flock to join them in the future. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
His wife had told him that he needed to learn how to manage the people around him. Any problem that could be solved with money or things was not a problem at all.
As for the students who didn’t want to work with him but still wanted to freeload off his meals, Su Shuochi didn’t call them out.
The refined-looking class monitor was named Hu Mingning. His father was the director of the Qingcheng Steel Factory, so his family was well-off.
Su Shuochi had Hu Mingning and Sheng Shiwu organize the students and order the food.
Both of them were very capable. Hu Mingning, in particular, was quite skilled, managing to order a meal for each person that cost less than fifty cents.
And it was a rather sumptuous meal. On top of that, Su Shuochi added a chicken leg for every student.
This made even those who had been completely unmoved feel a little swayed, but it was just a fleeting temptation. The number of people who actually committed did not increase.
However, for the students who had decided to follow Su Shuochi from the very beginning, this only strengthened their resolve.
Su Shuochi was extremely satisfied, but Gu Jiaojiao was getting worried. When her class ended, she didn’t see Su Shuochi waiting for her at the school gate.
She felt a little unsettled. Ever since she had transmigrated into the book, she had never been separated from Su Shuochi.
If Su Shuochi were healthy, she wouldn’t be worried at all. She liked ambitious and independent people.
That morning, before he left, he had said that once he found a house, he would come to the school gate to wait for her so they could go pay the deposit together.
He did mention that if he couldn’t find a suitable place, he would just grab a bite to eat outside, continue looking in the afternoon, and they could pay the deposit tomorrow.
Although the wheelchair she had given him was incredibly agile, the man was still paralyzed from the waist down. If he encountered an emergency, his reaction time wouldn’t be as quick as a normal person’s.
Gu Jiaojiao silently blamed herself. ’I was too eager for results. I should have waited until his legs were healed before letting him go out and fight for his future.’
Though deeply worried, Gu Jiaojiao didn’t let it show on her face. For the first time, she missed her cell phone.
’If I had my phone right now, I’d know what he was doing and I wouldn’t have to worry about him.’
Since she didn’t see him at the school gate, Gu Jiaojiao got a ride home for lunch on Dong Qiming’s bicycle.
When Mr. Su and Su’s mother saw that their son wasn’t home for lunch for the first time, they too became worried.
Mr. Su couldn’t help but ask, "Jiaojiao, did Chi say he wasn’t coming back for lunch?"
Back in their hometown, they’d call boys ’something-zai’ and girls ’something-ni’.
"Dad, Mom, please don’t worry. Shu Ci said he was going to look at houses. If he doesn’t find one he likes, he’ll eat at the state-run restaurant and continue looking this afternoon."
Gu Jiaojiao said with a smile, but inwardly she had already cursed Su Shuochi a hundred times over.
’If you didn’t find a suitable place, why not just come home for lunch? You could have gone back this afternoon or tomorrow!’
"As long as he said something, that’s good. Jiaojiao, eat some more." Seeing Gu Jiaojiao’s bright smile, Su’s mother relaxed and put more food on her plate.
"Jiaojiao, after we eat, how about I take you on the bike to go look for him?" Second Brother Gu suggested, noticing his sister didn’t seem to have much of an appetite.
"Okay. That way, Grandpa and our parents won’t have to worry about him," Gu Jiaojiao said cheerfully.
Her eating speed noticeably picked up. She didn’t know how to ride a bicycle. In her previous life, she had a private car to take her everywhere since she was a child, and she drove her own car when she grew up.
Her original body’s owner didn’t know how to ride one either. Since childhood, her brothers had always given her rides, so she never learned.
Normally, Second Brother Gu would take a nap after lunch before going out to sell his jianbing guozi in the afternoon.
But now, he was giving Gu Jiaojiao a ride out of the compound to look for Su Shuochi. "Jiaojiao, do you know where he is?"
"Let’s go to the black market and find Houzi first. See if he’s eating at his place."
Gu Jiaojiao figured Su Shuochi was quite frugal and wouldn’t actually eat at a state-run restaurant.
Just as the siblings were about to reach the alley in front of Houzi’s house, two burly men blocked their path.
Looking back, they saw two more men behind them. Second Brother Gu had no choice but to stop the bicycle and roar, "What do you think you’re doing in broad daylight?"
Normally, Second Brother Gu wouldn’t have wasted time talking. He would have just pedaled straight through them. But his sister was with him.
He was afraid they would take the opportunity to hurt her. Taking on three of them would be a struggle, let alone four.
Second Brother Gu didn’t know that Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t the least bit intimidated by the four men. Just a few days ago, she had single-handedly killed three large wild boars.
"We men went to all this trouble to chase you down. What do you think we want? To make friends, of course,"
a sleazy youth with a mouthful of yellow teeth said in a greasy tone.
"We don’t want to be friends with you. Forcing a friendship is against the law. Scram if you know what’s good for you," Gu Jiaojiao snapped.
She was already worried about Su Shuochi, and now these blind fools wanted to waste her precious time.
"We’re just country folk. We don’t know anything about laws. We just see that you’re a pretty comrade and want you to carry on our family line. What’s wrong with that?"
the sleazy, yellow-toothed youth said shamelessly.
Another man chimed in with a grin, "That’s right. Aren’t women just for bearing children? We haven’t done anything wrong."
"Bah! One look at you lot and it’s clear you’re destined to have no heirs. And you dare have designs on my sister? You’re courting death."
After saying his piece, Second Brother Gu propped up the bicycle, spat into his right palm, and rubbed his hands together.
’If there’s no escape, then I have to fight back with all I’ve got. I’ll cripple these bastards in one go.’
Seeing Second Brother Gu’s stance, the men knew he was a tough customer. They exchanged a look, and three of them rushed him at once.
Gu Jiaojiao could tell from her brother’s movements that he was no stranger to fights. While the men were distracted,
she quickly pulled a wooden club from her spatial inventory and gripped it tightly. These burly men were no more dangerous than the wild boars in the deep mountains.
But in the mountains, she could have just used a knockout drug. Here, at the mouth of the alley, there were onlookers.
’If I take them down in an instant, I’ll have to explain myself, which would be a huge hassle. It’s better to just knock them out with the club.’
Gu Jiaojiao had studied combat in her previous life. Taking on one strong man would be more than manageable.
She gripped the club and aimed squarely for the man’s head—the fastest and most effective approach.
