Apocalypse : Transmigrated With Milf System-Chapter 13: Betrayal
Chapter 13: Betrayal
Boss Chen, his face a grim mask of desperation, grabbed the thick rope.
"Alright, listen up! This is insane, but it's all we've got!" He frantically tied a heavy piece of debris
– a chunk of broken concrete – to one end of the rope, his hands trembling with a mixture of fear and adrenaline.
"I'm going first! Skinny, you're next! Ben, you after him! Nina, you bring up the rear! Mei Feng, you're last!"
His orders were barked out, his eyes darting nervously towards the stairwell where the monstrous roars were growing deafening.
He swung the weighted end of the rope precariously, his muscles straining. With a grunt of effort and a muttered "God help us all!", he hurled it across the alleyway.
A collective gasp escaped their lips as the makeshift grappling hook snagged precariously on the edge of the opposite building's roof.
Chen tested the rope with a desperate tug. "Hold tight, damn it! Don't be a dead weight!" He swung his legs over the edge of the terrace, his face white with terror.
"Here I go! Don't anyone fall and drag the rest of us down!" With a final, terrified glance back at the stairwell,
he began his slow, perilous slide across the chasm, his knuckles white as he gripped the rope.
Skinny watched him go, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and a desperate hope. "Please make it, Boss Chen... please don't let go..." He shuffled nervously to the edge as Chen signaled he was across.
"My turn... oh sweet Jesus, don't let me die like this..." His voice was a trembling whisper as he followed Chen, his lanky body swaying precariously above the deadly drop.
Big Ben, his usual lumbering movements replaced by a surprising agility born of terror, was next.
"Just gotta keep looking forward... don't look down... don't think about all the ways this can go wrong..."
His massive hands gripped the rope like a lifeline, his face a study in grim determination and raw fear.
Nina, her face pale but her eyes resolute, watched them go. Then she also clutched the rope and slid to the other side with slow movement.
After climbing to the other side, she looked over here, a strained urgency in her expression.
"Come on, you guys... almost there... just a little further..." She offered Mei Feng a shaky, forced smile. "You're next, Mei Feng. We'll be waiting... hurry."
Mei Feng nodded, her heart pounding in her chest, her gaze fixed on the terrifying drop.
She took a deep, shuddering breath, ready to follow. But just as she reached for the rope, a horrifying sound erupted from the stairwell below.
A chorus of wet, scraping noises, accompanied by guttural snarls, filled the air.
Decaying hands, reaching and clawing, began to appear over the edge of the top landing.
Mei Feng froze, her blood turning to ice, her eyes wide with unimaginable terror as the first of the infected, their limbs twisted and broken, began to crawl onto the top floor, their moans and snarls filling the narrow space.
"Oh God... they're here... we're all going to die..." Her voice was a strangled scream.
Watching as those zombies climbed up the stairs, Mei Feng, her face pale but resolute, reached out a trembling hand towards the thick, weathered rope.
Her eyes, though still wide with lingering fear, held a desperate determination.
"I... I can do this... I have to..." she whispered, taking a tentative step towards the edge of the terrace.
But before her fingers could fully grasp the rough fibers, a sharp, cracking sound echoed across the narrow alleyway.
Mei Feng froze, her eyes snapping towards the opposite building.
While others were paying attention to her side, nobody saw a sharp dagger in Nina's clenched hand.
Nina stood there, her face a twisted mask of terror and a chilling, self-serving resolve.
In his hands, he held the severed end of the rope.
"Nina! What the hell?!" Boss Chen screamed, his voice raw with disbelief and confusion.
"What did you do, you crazy bitch?!" His eyes darted between the broken rope in Nina's hands and the horrified look on Mei Feng's face.
Nina's eyes were wide with a frantic, almost manic fear.
"They're coming! I heard them! They could climb the rope! We can't risk it! Every second counts!"
Her voice was high-pitched and cracking, her gaze fixed on the unseen threat below.
Big Ben stared across the alleyway, his usual slow comprehension dawning into a horrified understanding.
"You... you cut the rope?!" His massive frame trembled with a mixture of shock and fury.
Skinny whimpered, backing away from the edge, his eyes darting nervously between Mei Feng and Nina. "Oh God... oh God... she just... she just left her... what the hell..."
Mei Feng stood frozen, her outstretched hand still reaching for the now-useless rope.
Her eyes, wide with terror and a dawning sense of utter betrayal, locked onto Nina's frantic face across the chasm.
"Nina...? Why...? Please... don't..." Her voice was a choked sob, the horrifying reality of her abandonment sinking in.
The monstrous roars from the stairwell below grew louder, closer, a terrifying symphony of impending doom. The first decaying hands were now visible, clawing their way onto the terrace.
Ruel, who had been observing the unfolding scene with detached eyes, finally spoke, a sardonic smirk playing on his lips, his voice low and devoid of emotion. "Well, that's one way to handle a straggler.
Efficiency at its finest, wouldn't you say?" His gaze flickered from the approaching zombies to the utter despair etched on Mei Feng's face, a hint of something unreadable glinting in his eyes.
The desperate gamble had turned into a brutal, irreversible act of self-preservation.
"B.. Boss!!" Skinny trembled, his eyes wide with terror as he looked down the floors of the adjacent building.
Then Boss Chen, who turned his head, saw a bewildered runt, then he looked at the same place where Skinny was pointing at.
Looking down, what caught his eye was a small horde gathering below the building they were standing on.
"Dammit!!" he scowled, his face contorted with a fresh wave of fear as he saw the rioting herd.
Nina, who also happened to see the growing mass of zombies below them, screamed, her voice laced with hysteria.
"Boss!! We need to hurry up from here! We'll be swarmed! All this effort for nothing!"
Then each of them made up their mind and scrambled towards the stairs of their new refuge without looking back, as if Mei's life, and Ruel's presence, had absolutely no bearing on their desperate flight.
Looking at their fading silhouettes, a dark chuckle rumbled in Ruel's chest, a cruel amusement twisting his lips.
"Heh, so much for camaraderie. Every man for himself when the rotters come knocking."
He turned back to Mei Feng, who stood frozen, her eyes wide with a horrifying mix of betrayal and impending doom, tears still silently tracing paths down her pale cheeks.
The guttural snarls of the approaching infected were growing louder, their shuffling footsteps now audible on the terrace behind them.
A strange calm settled over Ruel, a stark contrast to the raw terror that gripped the others moments ago.
He took a slow, deliberate breath, a predatory smirk playing on his lips as he looked at Mei Feng. "Well, looks like it's just you and me now, sweetheart."
His voice, though low, was surprisingly steady, cutting through the rising tide of monstrous sounds. "Don't worry your pretty little head. I've got a plan."
His hand moved smoothly to his side, and with a soft shink, a gleaming, intricately crafted sword materialized in his grip, seemingly out of thin air.
The polished steel reflected the dim light, a silent promise of swift, brutal efficiency.
Mei Feng gasped, her eyes widening in shock and a dawning, bewildered hope as she stared at the sudden appearance of the weapon.
The raw terror in her expression began to be replaced by a hesitant curiosity.
The first of the infected, its decaying face contorted in a silent snarl, lurched onto the terrace, its rotting hands reaching out.
Ruel's eyes narrowed, all trace of calmness vanishing, replaced by a cold, predatory focus.
A grim smile touched his lips, a hint of the deadly power he had kept concealed.
"Looks like playtime's over, wouldn't you say?" He shifted his stance, the sword held loosely but ready, his gaze fixed on the approaching horrors.
"Time to show these ugly bastards what I'm really capable of." The air crackled with a sudden, palpable shift in power.
The hunted was about to become the hunter, and a bloody spectacle was about to begin.
