Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 98 I Have My Own Ways
"Tell me, when will the great hunt begin?" Mack’s usual stoic face now had a creased line between his brows.
"The great hunt is supposed to be three months from now. But I am not sure anymore..." Camile shook her head. "Things have been unfolding differently lately, I fear that they might arrive sooner than expected."
"What must we do to survive this great hunt?" Mack said, unclasping his hand from her shoulder.
"We can only rely on the people with awakened abilities, the gifted," Camile said, letting out a deep breath she had been holding all these while.
"How many have awakened?"
"We have three awakened now, we sent the first one to your other ally, so we currently have two in our base," Camile said, pushing a strand of hair from her face.
"Bring them to me. Issue an order, everyone starts training now." Mack’s voice echoed across the room.
....
Back in Vile Valley.
The sound of a hoe breaking through the soil echoed through the air. Ling Xuan pulled the hoe out along with some soil.
She wiped the sweat clinging to her skin, her bored gaze glanced at the field, calculating. They were almost done with the planting, and she couldn’t wait to be done with farming.
"Commander, here, have some water." Izzy’s voice rang behind her.
When Ling Xuan turned, she saw a brunette lady with a smile as dazzling as the spring. But her gaze remained stoic, and she glanced at the water bottle in her hand.
"I don’t need it." She said so coldly, that Izzy felt shivers down her spine.
Izzy blinked in confusion, wondering if she wasn’t the same person she had spoken to earlier in the morning.
She let out a nervous laugh. "Okay commander, I’ll keep the water here just in case you want it later..." She paused, her gaze fell on the hoe she was holding. "Commander, why don’t you leave the hard work to the men?"
Ling Xuan’s brows furrowed in irritation. "I don’t need your advice." Her reply was curt, cold, and distant like she was.
Without giving her another chance to speak, Ling Xuan walked away from her, leaving the aghast-looking Izzy.
By the time Izzy finally broke out of her trance-like state. "You forgot your water." She yelled behind her, but she didn’t dare to run after her. When she got no reply, a look of guilt flickered across her expression. ’Did I offend her?’ she thought inwardly.
Ling Xuan continued walking to check on the other farmers.
"Laurel." A familiar voice rang from behind her, her steps faltered.
Before she could turn around, the familiar figure was already standing before her.
"Mr. Lennox." Ling Xuan called, the name left a bitter taste in her tongue.
"I haven’t seen you all day and I thought I might find you here," Chris said in his usual calm voice as if nothing could bother him. His gaze scanned the huge field. "You’ve already started farming, I thought we had enough supplies to sustain us for years."
"There is never too much food, the more the better. We can exchange them later for valuable supplies in the future." Ling Xuan said curtly.
"I see, forgive my shortsight," Chris replied, his eyes held a mysterious glint, it was so subtle that it could be easily missed.
However, Ling Xuan saw the glint in his eyes, and all she could associate it with was trouble. "What do you want?"
Chris was taken aback by the hostility in her voice, but he brushed it away as he had noticed the same pattern for some time now. He knew the Laurel he was talking to was different from the Laurel he spoke with in the comm room. And he knew he had to be flexible with both of them, until he figured out what was really going on.
"I never knew it was wrong of me to say a few words of greeting to you, Laurel." He said, his eyes lingering on her for a few seconds before moving to the field again. "I came to you to let you know my spies discovered something in the Severance cult’s base." He lowered his voice so only she could hear.
Ling Xuan stared at him for a second. "Walk with me." She said, walking towards the outer wall of the fortress.
Chris followed after her.
"So what have you found?" Ling Xuan asked the moment they were far away from the farmers.
"My spies were unable to access the heart of the base, which is reported as the basement. But according to the info I’ve gathered, the severance cult has discovered three awakenings, and they are called the gifted. They had sent messages about how the refugees had to earn points by completing missions.
I haven’t gotten any info on the missions yet, however, I got some very important information. The red mist had created a human-like animal, they behave like zombies but they are faster and more brutal, and they are called the infected. After being infected by the mist, they become immune to the mist." Chris said, his tone serious.
Ling Xuan arched one of her brows. "I understand, thank you for the information." She said, "It seems the severance cult had started making their moves. I want the details of the missions the moment your spies figure out what it is."
"Sure." Chris looked up, his gaze lingered on the barrier shielding the fortress. "I hope the infected wouldn’t detect our fortress, I don’t think the barrier can block living things." He said with a small frown.
Ling Xuan followed his gaze. He was right, the barrier could only protect them against nature’s attack but when it came to humans or animals coming through, it wouldn’t block them.
"Order the soldiers to keep a close watch on the movement beyond the walls, they can’t be lax around thinking the shield would protect us from the infected attacks. Things have changed now, and events are happening faster than expected, we have to be on alert." Ling Xuan said as she continued walking.
"I’ll let them know."
Ling Xuan’s steps faltered. "By the way, how did you get the information from your spies?"
"I have my own ways," Chris said with an indifferent expression.
