Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 94 To Give Hope
"If you really think the farming sector is where you belong I can’t say otherwise." Laurel paused, giving it another thought. "But just be aware that it is no easy task. We have to grow enough food to feed everyone and stockpile." She added.
"Yes, Commander," Izzy said with enthusiasm. "But if I may ask, I thought we had already stockpiled enough food to sustain us for years... don’t get me wrong, I saw a lot of people eating meat, rice, some cereals, and other exquisite food."
Laurel understood what she meant by ’exquisite food’; she was indirectly pointing it out to the socialites.
"If we have that much, why do we need to plant for now?" Izzy’s brows creased slightly in curiosity.
"We need to grow food because we don’t know how long the disaster will last and we can’t rely solely on the food we have stockpiled. And besides..." Laurel started walking towards the field. She took maize’s seed from her seed bag tied to her waist and began putting two to three seeds in the holes. Behind them, other farmers were busy covering the seeds with soil.
"... even though the world had plummeted into disaster, I believe there are other survivors just like us, and they might not have food, but we can exchange our food for some valuable things we might need. We can also sell them and build our way up in the new world.
And although we are only 520 people now, I believe others will join us, so we need all the food we can grow." Laurel said as she continued putting the seeds in the hole.
Izzy walked beside her, and she reached her hand for Laurel to give her some seeds to plant.
Laurel reached into her seed bag and gave her some. "Put two to three seeds per hole. We put multiple seeds to ensure at least one grows up strong, but we avoid putting too many so the seeds wouldn’t get crowded and lack the required nutrients."
Izzy nodded her head, paying attention to Laurel’s words diligently.
"If I may ask, what do you think the new world will be like? You mentioned it earlier and I got a little curious."
Laurel turned to her for a brief second before continuing again. "I think the new world will be nothing but a lawless world where only the strong rule... the weak will be nothing but a stepping stone and easily disposable."
Laurel’s thoughts wandered back to her past life. She had seen people get killed just because of a drop of water. Many were used as baits for the monsters, and the strong stayed behind them, using them as shields. Brothers betraying each other, children abandoning their parents, and friends killing each other all in the name of reducing dead weights.
She was also a victim of this cruel world... but she blamed herself for it. She believed she was at fault for trusting the people she called family blindly. But if she couldn’t even trust her own family, who else could she trust?
She swallowed nervously at the burning sensation rising in her throat. Her fist tightened around the seeds in her hands.
"Are you alright, Commander?" Izzy’s voice broke her from her trance-like state.
Laurel nodded her head, her eye movements were a little disoriented.
"I’m sorry if I asked something I’m not supposed to." Izzy lowered her head slightly, a look of guilt etched on her face.
"You don’t have to apologize for that. I just thought of my family, that’s all." Laurel said, half-truth half-lie.
She had regarded the Waynes and Camile as family in her past life. She thought she finally had a place where she belonged, filling the void left by her being orphaned. But she was wrong, the void had grown even larger.
"Your family? Are they here in the fortress?" Izzy asked, a small smile formed on her lips.
"Yes, I believe you have meant them before," Laurel replied mindlessly, she felt she had been talking a lot more than usual, but she didn’t want to appear rude.
"Really? I don’t think so."
Laurel glanced at Izzy. "I think you have seen the Wayne family before."
"Oh," Izzy looked at her with a surprised look. "I have met the Wayne family before... but what I meant is your own family."
"My own family?" Laurel asked, her knuckles turned white from how tightly she was clenching her fist unknowingly. That question was always like a hot knife piercing her heart. She hated it and never liked to be reminded of who she once was, and who she was currently.
"Yes." Izzy’s smile faltered the moment she noticed the change in Laurel’s mood.
"Um... are we going to only plant maize?" Izzy changed the conversation. "What are they planting?" She gestured with her head towards the men planting tubers with machines.
Laurel let out a breath she never realized she had been holding. Her fist loosened slightly. "They are planting both Irish and sweet potatoes. And the machine they are using is called a potato planter." She said continuing to plant the maize.
"Maybe we can make potato chips in the future," Laurel added with a smile.
"Potato chips?" Izzy asked with a little excitement. "That would really be nice, then we don’t have to worry about food disappearing from existence. Then we need to build a chip processing industry, maybe we can also make other snacks, like biscuits, chocolates, jam, butter, and possibly soft drinks!" She said illustrating with her hands, her face was expressive, visibly showing her emotions.
Laurel stared at her for a good whole minute, before a smile crept up her face. "You really know how to imagine things." She chuckled.
Izzy laughed with her. "I’m serious, then we can build the biggest supermarket in the new world, we will give humanity hope that all is not lost," Izzy added, a little seriously.
Laurel stared at her with a little intrigue. "We will give humanity hope that all is not lost." She repeated the words slowly, a faint warmth seeped into her chest... Maybe that was why she was given a second chance, to give hope...
