Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 84 Snow Lotus
"I didn’t mean to make you feel that way." Laurel quickly said.
"You don’t have to act like this in front of me... we are friends, remember," Chris said calmly.
Laurel nodded, fidgeting with her hand. She lowered her gaze, her brows knitted in deep thoughts.
"Where did you grow up?" Chris suddenly asked.
"Huh?" Laurel snapped her head up instantly. "Oh, I was born and raised in the heart of Luxebridge city... my parents died when I was ten, after their death I was sent to the orphanage..." Laurel’s voice lowered at the end, lowering her gaze again.
"I’m sorry to hear about that," Chris said, rising to his feet, before walking closer to her.
"It’s okay, it has been a long time... I’m afraid I don’t remember what they look like anymore." She said, her throat constricting with emotions.
"I don’t mean to pry too much... but if you lived in the center of Luxebridge city, then your parents must be wealthy... only the elites could afford living in those areas." He said, tucking one hand into his pocket, his eyes narrowing closely on her.
Laurel appeared to be in deep thought. "Yes... we were well off... but everything collapsed after they died. I lost my grandfather too, and none of my relatives were willing to take me in... so I ended up in the orphanage."
’That explains it.’ Chris thought to himself.
Unconsciously, Laurel reached for the yin-yang necklace around her neck and mindlessly caressed it.
A knowing glint flashed through Chris’s eyes. His hands trembled slightly by his side before clenching into a tight fist.
His jaw tightened for a moment before loosening again.
"What a unique necklace." He said.
"My grandfather gave it to me when I was little," Laurel replied, placing the necklace back inside her clothes.
Her eyes flickered back to the computer screen in front of her which was showing the people moving back to their various homes.
District A-D was inside the inner wall. District E to N was outside the inner wall, and although there were already a lot of residences, many of the buildings were still empty.
She glanced at Chris, seeing his pale skin made her remember the Snow Lotus plant she was currently owing in debt.
"Chris, don’t forget to take your medicine... I have something to take care of, I’ll see you later." She said, already standing.
Chris nodded. "See you."
Laurel offered him a polite smile before leaving.
When Laurel had left the intercom room, she headed back into her room. After locking the door, she disappeared into her space.
When she entered the space house, Ling Xuan sat on the cushion lying on the floor, and she was writing down something on a piece of paper on the table.
"What are you doing?" Laurel asked as she stepped closer to her.
"Calligraphy." Ling Xuan replied curtly.
Laurel bit her inner cheeks to stop herself from laughing when she saw the writing of Ling Xuan. "Sister Ling Xuan, you have talent in many things, but I can see that the cup of your talents is already overflowing and you can’t add more to it."
Ling Xuan lazily peered her eyes away from the paper, staring at Laurel. "Just say I’m bad at it and spare me too many words."
Laurel sighed. "Sister Ling Xuan... we are in deep trouble."
"Trouble?"
Laurel nodded her head. "To be able to get the Worldroot barrier seed, the trader said he needed Snow Lotus. I said we didn’t have it, but he said he would give us a month to look for it. The price also doubled due to extra time.
I wanted to refuse it but the situation was dire and we needed anything that could help. Not only is the herb a Grade B herb but it grows only in the mist... And if we can’t pay back, the trader could take anything they want from our storage... with no limit." She said, biting her lower lip in frustration.
Hearing the last part, the ink on Ling Xuan’s brush pooled in one particular spot on the paper, further ruining the calligraphy.
Ling Xuan lifted her gaze slowly, her eyes glaring daggers at Laurel.
"That is too much." Ling Xuan said calmly.
Laurel didn’t know if it was the good calm or the calm that comes before the storm, she hoped that it was the former.
"I had no choice, and I wanted to discuss it with you but you were yelling that I should hurry up. So I had no choice but to accept the deal." Laurel muffled the last part under her breath.
Her explanation only made Ling Xuan’s gaze darken more. "System." Ling Xuan called out, her voice colder than the wind of winter.
[Yes host.]
"You are really good at taking advantage of us. Two grade B plants that grow in the dangerous mist. Sometimes I wonder if you are working for our good or if you are trying to bring us to our doom." Ling Xuan spat out, her knuckles cracking from how tight her hand was clenching.
[The former it is. The Worldroot barrier seed helped the host to protect their fortress and keep everyone safe. The required cost is not too much.]
"You..." Ling Xuan closed her eyes to control her temper. In as much as she wanted to yell at the system, or break it if she could, she knew it was right.
"System, do you have any idea where we can find the Snow Lotus?" Laurel asked in a small voice, glancing at Ling Xuan.
[Give me a moment...]
[Searching...]
The room fell silent as they waited for the system’s answer.
[Snow Lotus detected: I have located a Snow Lotus herb growing in the mist 20km from the fortress. I’ll send you the directions’ map.]
Laurel felt her strength waning. She could only hope that their suits would be able to handle the corrosiveness of the mist.
[... However, hosts are advised not to set out yet, as the outside world is still too dangerous to explore.]
