Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 83 Stop Moving
Back in the valley, the soldiers ushered the people out of the basement. Some of them were hesitant to come out, afraid they might get struck by a meteor, while others ran out, believing the basement didn’t hold any safety.
"Don’t move!" A soldier yelled when one of the women pushed another woman out of the way.
"Don’t be afraid, the valley is safe." Another yelled.
After a few seconds, the streets were filled with people. A boy around the age of eight tugged his mother’s skirt. "Mother, what is that?" He said pointing up at the sky.
His mother raised her head, her eyes widening when she saw the thin layer of barrier shielding the valley.
"What is that? It is not safe to be here!" She shouted, holding her son’s hand. She turned around heading back to the basement.
A few people followed her instinctively, and more people turned around following them. Within seconds the calm broke, and the crowd surged towards the basement entrance blocking the people coming out.
"Get out of the way!" The woman said, pushing the person in front of her back into the basement.
"What are you doing!... stop..."
"It is not safe outside! We are going to die if we go outside!" Another yelled from behind the crowd.
"Everyone, stop moving!" A soldier’s voice thundered from behind them. His face tightened as the people pushed against each other.
"Testing... Testing... Testing." A voice echoed through every corner of the valley, both in the streets, homes, and basements.
Everyone paused midstep, their eyes searching for where the voice was coming from.
"Hello everyone, this is the Leader of the base speaking, Commander Laurel." Laurel cleared her throat before speaking again.
"The Meteor shower had taken us unaware, but I’m glad to inform everyone that the valley is safe, and we have successfully developed a bio-engineered plant that will continue to shield us from the hazardous air and any future attacks.
Farming Sector, you are responsible for watering the tree every day. And the Engineering sector will start building water purification and distribution machines.
As for the medical sector, run tests on everyone in the valley, save their data for future identification and treatment purposes. Anyone who is very shaken by today’s incident may seek help in the medical sector." Laurel paused.
A man crawled out from under a table, his legs shaking as he headed outside, he glanced at his sides. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw people filling the once deserted streets.
He made a mental note to bring to the Commander’s notice that men should also be allowed in the basement.
"Construction of buildings will commence from tomorrow. Everyone should get enough rest today, from tomorrow, everyone in this valley will start training.
Residents in District N, should not return for now, as the District will be renovated. The soldiers will reassign you to another district."
The intercom disconnected.
Laurel let out a deep sigh, her shoulders lowered slightly.
"Make sure no one goes near the northern district." She said with a tired expression.
"Commander." One of the soldiers saluted. "We just got information on Jade Wayne, she hadn’t left the fortress yet, she is currently in district E, outside the inner wall."
Laurel paused. If she sent Jade out, she would die in a matter of seconds in the burning world. But if she let her stay, Ling Xuan would not be happy with her decision.
"She will stay outside the inner wall temporarily until the meteor shower is over," Laurel said, nodding her head as if to tell herself it was a good plan.
The soldier saluted before taking his leave.
"A penny for your thoughts," Gabriel said, handing a coin to Laurel, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
Laurel stared at him for a second. "No thank you." She turned away from him.
Gabriel swallowed, his eyes stung from the blatant rejection. He brushed his hair away from his face before running his fingers through his hair.
"Don’t tell me, you still hold a grudge against me?" He said, leaning his waist against the table.
"Hold a grudge against you? Me?" Laurel turned to him, her brows furrowed slightly in confusion.
She had never held a grudge against him, and neither did she know the reason why he thought she might have one against him.
"Yes. I know you told me to keep what happened a secret, but I can’t help having this strange feeling that you dislike me. I know I shouldn’t have made you do it that day, but you have to understand that it would have been my first k..."
Before Gabriel could finish his words, the door creaked open.
Gabriel and Laurel turned towards the door. Chris stood before them, his expression blank but his eyes glanced at them before a small glint of seriousness settled in them.
"What were you saying?" Laurel glanced at Gabriel.
"Nothing," Gabriel said, pushing himself off the table he was leaning on. He scratched the back of his neck. "I’ll get going." He muttered under his breath, glancing one last time at Chris.
’Ungrateful pretty fellow. You couldn’t even say a simple thank you for saving you...’ Gabriel’s steps faltered for a second as a look of horror contorted his face.
’Commander Laurel is Mr. Wayne’s wife... does it mean Mrs. Wayne is having an affair with this pretty guy?’ He glanced at Laurel before turning to Chris. ’That is why she didn’t want to tell anyone... oh my world... women are not to be trusted.’ He thought as he stepped out of the room.
Laurel stared at Gabriel’s disappearing form. Deep inside her she felt a strange feeling that something was wrong with the way he was glancing at Chris and her, but no matter what it was she couldn’t wrap her hands around it.
She turned to Chris, her frown softening. "How are you doing? I hope you weren’t stressed by the panic earlier?"
Chris’s lips pulled up slightly. "I may be ill but I’m not as fragile as a flower." His gaze lingered on Laurel for a moment too long.
Memories of her pressing her lips against his flickered through his mind, but he quickly dismissed them from his head.
