Chapter 40: Chapter 40 We are not Compatible

Laurel rested her back against the door to her room. She felt tears trickling down her cheeks. She felt stupid for crying over someone who betrayed her and killed her.

She could still remember the smug look on her face, the satisfaction in her look when she watched her die.

But knowing all this, why was she still crying? She wondered.

It hurts so much, yet it was not something she could easily forget. Their bond, the friendship, all they had gone through together.

Her heart clenched. "Damn me." She tugged her hair in anger and frustration. "Why the hell can’t I stop grieving something that was built on lies?"

She wanted to scream, to drown out the pain in her chest, yet there was nothing except the throbbing pain in her chest.

"What’s happening? Did our supplies get stolen? Why are you crying?" Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head.

Laurel quickly wiped the tears from her cheeks. She didn’t want Ling Xuan to know she was crying over a pretentious devil, it would only make Ling Xuan hate her more apart from being weak.

"Nothing," Laurel sniffled.

"Nothing? I just took a nap and you’re already crying?" Ling Xuan sighed, deciding to browse through her memory again.

Seconds went by and Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head, this time very annoyed.

"You used 1500 points because of some workers who are working for their money?"

Laurel sniffled. She knew the conversation wasn’t something she needed to have without facing Ling Xuan... after all, she couldn’t hurt her.

Laurel disappeared into the space house. Ling Xuan sat on a chair, exuding her mighty general aura.

The room was so suffocating, that Luo had to hide behind a wall, peeking at its two masters.

"Why?" Ling Xuan muttered with her eyes closed.

Laurel stood in front of her like a child who was getting reprimanded by their elder.

She swallowed. "I had to, else they would end up collapsing from the heat, and that would delay the construction."

Ling Xuan snapped her eyes open, and her dark brown eyes shot daggers at her. "How is that our concern? They would bring more people to replace them. You didn’t have to waste our hard-earned points for strangers, even if they are family, it is still not done."

Bile rose in Laurel’s throat, burning so badly from her emotions. "If they start collapsing, and even if other people replace them, don’t you know it will draw unwanted attention? And that is something we don’t want right now." Her hands tightened into a fist.

"Really? If you had thought it through then you would have known what you did had the bigger consequences..." Ling Xuan paused. "What do you think will happen when the people learn that the water you gave to them miraculously stops the heat from affecting them?"

"They won’t know..."

"Laurel!" Ling Xuan rose to her feet. "I don’t care about your empathetic feelings, if you can’t be analytical, there is no point in working together."

"I did it for our best interest, we don’t want anyone to know what we are doing. Especially as other people are aware of the coming disaster, I couldn’t take the risk." Laurel snapped back.

Ling Xuan’s voice lowered, almost too calmly. "Do you know what is worse than enemies?" She asked.

Laurel remained quiet. She knew it was frenemies.

"People with nothing, when they are given just a tiny bit, they become greedy for more. And that is the worst thing a man can draw to himself." Ling Xuan walked closer to Laurel.

"When the workers connect the puzzles, they will know it came from you. After all, there are many of them who drank it. Then, they will come for more, begging. They will spin tales of pity, even when you give them more, more will come back.

The news will spread like wildfire. And when you refuse to give them any more, the people will gather together and demand you give more, and if there is no more. Only your destruction remains.

The plans you are trying to painstakingly hide will be known to all. Laurel, I’m asking you, is it really worth it?"

Laurel blinked, even if she normally thought Ling Xuan was cruel, there was sense behind her words.

Laurel lifted her head. "Yes, it is worth it. Because even if I didn’t give them the water, we were also likely to be discovered. There is no right or wrong answer, Ling Xuan."

Ling Xuan sighed deeply. "We both have different visions and methods of doing things." She shook her head. "We are not compatible."

"What do you mean?" Laurel stammered.

Ling Xuan turned her back to her. "It means we can’t work together."

Laurel rushed to her front, her hazel eyes widening with fear. "We will die! Ling Xuan we have come so far to let it go to waste. We have stockpiled, we have bought a lot of things, we have a farm, look.." Laurel waved at the house. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"We even bought a space house, Ling Xuan, we can’t give up now. We can’t!" Laurel’s voice wobbled, she had never felt so much fear in her life, not even when she was thrown to the monsters.

"I’d rather die and go be with my ancestors, than work with someone who doesn’t share the same vision as me. I came to conquer Laurel, not play house in a pink dream." Ling Xuan’s gaze hardened.

"Pink dream? What do you mean?" Laurel stuttered.

"It means you are too soft to work with me." Ling Xuan finally snapped at her.

Laurel let out a shaky breath. "So being soft is a crime?" She squinted her eyes in pain. "This is who I am, Ling Xuan, I know you think I’m spineless... maybe even a coward.

But I’m trying, I’m doing my best not to always act on my emotions. I’m soft, yes. And I really hate myself for it sometimes, these damn emotions." She hit her chest in pain.

She chuckled in tears. "I think you are very cool and a badass. Commanding respect and fear everywhere you go... I wish I could be like you too, I wish I could be as decisive as you are...

However, I can’t, I really can’t. If I’m like you, there will be no me... Ling Xuan, please don’t go." She muttered with her head lowered.

Ling Xuan only frowned at her words. "I don’t have the capacity to understand your emotions, Laurel. Emotions are for weaklings... if you want to be strong, you must kill them." Ling Xuan’s eyes widened slightly.
