Flirted Wrong, Married Right-Chapter 832: Spineless
Evelyn Clayton’s expression was very calm.
She lowered her eyes, avoiding James Grant’s gaze, and said, "For no particular reason. It’s just that he spoke up first, and since we are family, it’s reasonable for the two of us to attend the wedding together."
James Grant found it difficult to suppress a surge of anger.
Since reuniting with Evelyn Clayton, he hadn’t felt this way for a long time.
But now, James Grant could no longer control his emotions.
He almost immediately stood up, using a questioning tone, "You and Shane, are you really just siblings?"
Evelyn Clayton then looked up at James Grant, her tone indifferent, "Why are you asking this?"
"You clearly know—" James Grant was uncharacteristically angry, "You know very well what it means for a man and a woman to attend a wedding together!"
Evelyn Clayton’s expression could be described as cold, "I don’t think it means anything else. James, have you forgotten, my last name is now Sinclair, and Shane and I are family with the same surname."
James Grant looked at Evelyn Clayton, his eyes filled with a faint mockery, "Are you playing dumb? Evelyn, you’re so smart, you can’t possibly miss—"
"James Grant." Evelyn Clayton’s voice was weighted, "I advise you to be cautious with your words."
She looked coldly at James Grant, paused, and then continued, "You must understand, some words, once spoken, cannot be taken back."
James Grant’s reasoning barely held back.
Seeing the warning look in Evelyn Clayton’s eyes, James Grant clenched his molars tightly, swallowing the indescribable chill in his heart.
After a long pause, James Grant shamefully lowered his eyes, his voice hoarse, "I didn’t mean anything else. Sorry, I was too emotional earlier."
Evelyn Clayton raised her eyebrows slightly, "Thank you for your understanding."
After speaking, Evelyn Clayton stood up, "Anyway, thank you Director Grant for personally delivering the invitation. I appreciate the gesture. You can take the invitation back; if there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave first."
James Grant kept his eyes downcast, not speaking for a while.
Evelyn Clayton then prepared to turn and leave.
She was at the door when James Grant hurriedly spoke up to stop her.
"Evelyn," James Grant’s gaze was dim, yet it carried a hint of pleading, "Please, consider it my request... can you answer one question for me first?"
Evelyn Clayton hesitated for a moment, ultimately unable to resist that indescribable softness in her heart.
She nodded, "Ask."
"There’s no emotion between you and Shane that goes beyond... sibling love, is there?"
Meeting James Grant’s gaze, Evelyn Clayton felt a bit startled.
James Grant’s eyes were like those of someone on the verge of drowning, seeing a piece of driftwood that could save their life, with a flicker of hope in them that was unbearable to witness.
Evelyn Clayton hastily withdrew her gaze, her tone firm, "No. He will only ever be like a brother to me."
Not wanting to hear James Grant’s next question, she turned and quickly left.
Upon reaching the elevator, Evelyn Clayton dared to look back towards the direction of the lounge.
She saw James Grant’s back.
Broad, upright, yet inexplicably desolate.
Evelyn Clayton forced herself to look away, and as the elevator doors opened, she fled inside as if escaping.
Back in the office, Evelyn Clayton closed the door, gently closed her eyes, and took a deep breath.
She found it difficult to describe her current feelings, as if something was shaking within her, making her involuntarily despise herself.
Useless, Evelyn Clayton.
