Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 32 Ready For Harvest
Laurel stared at the screen for a second, then picked up the call.
"Mr. Lennox?" She said quietly.
Chris’s voice came from the other side, calm as always, but this time there was something sharper under it.
"It’s happening," he said, almost as if he didn’t want it to be true.
Laurel’s breath caught. "The heat?" she asked, even when she was sure it was what he was referring to.
Sometimes she wished she was wrong, and everything she had experienced was just a dream, unfortunately, it was real, and this was the first sign of it.
"Yes," Chris replied. "It is all over the news, the weather experts claim it is climate change due to the ozone layer depletion. It’s not noon yet and it’s already rising unnaturally."
Laurel squeezed the phone tighter in her hand. "I told you. If I were you, I would start stockpiling."
Her heart clenched at the thought of the lives that were going to be lost during the heatwave. Hundreds of people would die from heatstroke, and thousands of animals would not make it. Even the forests and the houses caught fire because of the extreme heat, and it pains her that there was nothing she could do about it.
"I know," Chris said, sounding more of a believer now. "I’ve started making preparations. I’m stockpiling as you said, and I already bought a mansion in the mountain area."
Laurel exhaled slowly, relief and tension mixing in her chest. "Good. Warn your family about it. However, be careful about the people you tell. Everyone cannot be saved, and if people know that you know what is coming, it might invite trouble." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
Chris paused for a second as if processing her words.
"What about you?" he asked.
Laurel looked outside again. The sunlight was still warm.
"I’m doing my own preparations," she replied. "I already secured a location."
"A location?" Chris asked, clearly interested.
Laurel hesitated. She didn’t want to tell him about the valley yet.
"I’ll tell you later," Laurel said calmly. "For now take care of yourself. Come see me tomorrow for your next treatment, and you will also need a new batch of medicine."
"You sound like you’re giving orders." He said with a light tone.
"I am," Laurel replied, then her tone softened a little bit. "Because I don’t want you to die."
If Laurel could defy fate, she was going to do everything in her power to help those close to her defy their fates too.
The phone went quiet for a moment.
Then Chris broke the silence, his voice lower. "Thank you. I’ll do my best to stay alive." He paused, almost hesitating as if he was contemplating what to say.
"The drugs were switched by Camile, I know you must think she’s a nice person, but be careful. I don’t know if she only has ill intentions towards me... and she’s stockpiling too. Did you tell her?"
"Camile is stockpiling?" Laurel’s fingers trembled slightly.
"Yes, and she has been sending huge money to a group called Severance..."
"Severance?" Laurel choked on her words.
The phone almost fell out of her hand. Her eyes blurred with tears. Severance was the name of the group that had raided their bunker and stolen their supplies during her past life.
The same group she was framed for as their spy. The information was a little too much for her to process.
She didn’t tell Camile about the apocalypse, doesn’t that mean she was also reborn?
"She was also reborn," Laurel muttered under her breath as tears trickled down her cheeks. And she was partnering with the Severance group again.
"Mrs. Wayne, is everything okay?" Chris’s voice rang from the other side of the phone.
Laurel quickly composed herself. She brushed off the tears from her face. "Yes. Everything is fine... I didn’t tell her about the apocalypse. She must have got it from somewhere."
"Oh, okay. I already blocked all the cards I gave to her. I owe you my life, Mrs. Wayne. And I know this must be sad for you to hear, but I’m going to break up with her." Chris added.
"Anything that suits you. It’s your life, and I wouldn’t advise you to stay with someone who is after your life, even if she is my sister." Laurel said, the word sister left a bitter taste in her mouth.
"Alright. Take care."
"You too."
Laurel lowered the phone the moment it beeped, indicating the call was disconnected.
Laurel’s shoulders slumped in disappointment. She thought she had the upper hand all this while, but who knew her sister also had memories of their past lives?
Before she could dwell on it.
Something chimed. She looked at her phone but there was no notification. Then a light blue wrapping around her wrist caught her eye.
The transparent blue screen was like a wristwatch. [Crop status panel.]
[Status on crops
Corn: Ready for harvest {100%}
Millet: 2 minutes remaining before harvest {99%}
Tomatoes: Ready for harvest {100%}
Beans: Ready for harvest {99.9%}
Potatoes: 10:30:10 before harvest {92%}]
[Hosts should start harvesting. Leaving the crops too long without harvest would render them spoiled and unusable.]
Laurel’s eyes widened as she stared at the crop status panel.
"What...?" Her lips parted slightly. She lifted her wrist closer, blinking as if that would change the numbers.
"Corn is ready for harvest, and tomatoes are ready for harvest. Beans are almost ready."
Her heart beat faster in her chest. This wasn’t farming anymore, this... this was impossible.
She felt over the moon. She had returned to the warehouse the previous day to water the plants again.
She was a little sad that she had used all the space water. But this was amazing, she could easily grow crops in a matter of hours. She would never have to worry about food during the apocalypse.
Laurel swallowed hard. Excitement flickered in her chest, but it didn’t last long. Because if the crops grew this fast... they could also rot just as fast.
And if she missed the harvest window, the mission would fail.
