Chapter 31: Chapter 31 Trying to Know Her Better

Alexander looked like he wanted to caution her, but acted against it. His expression remained aloof. "Sure, it will be ready soon."

Ling Xuan gave a curt nod, before going to Laurel’s room. She cleaned up and changed her clothes before coming down to the dining room.

"Do you really have to eat his food? Remember he is an enemy." Laurel warned, feeling uncomfortable about going closer to the a**hole of a husband.

"I just want to see what he is up to Laurel, only then can we handle him, once and for all." Ling Xuan replied calmly.

The dining table was filled with different meat, chicken, lamb, and beef. Some of them were boiled, fried, and grilled, and beside it was a bottle of wine in an ice bucket. It looked like a feast and not a meal for just one person.

Ling Xuan arched her brows in suspicion, she sat on the chair which was pulled back by Alexander, when she reached to pull it closer, he pushed it in for her. Ling Xuan looked up, only to find Alexander flashing her a small smile before moving to sit beside her.

Ling Xuan glanced at the food on the table, she reached for a grilled chicken, pulling its leg out. She took a bite before turning to Alexander. "Tell me, what are you up to?" She asked.

Alexander’s eyes narrowed at the way she was sitting. Why was his wife who was always elegant and mindful of her manner sitting like a man, and not just any man, like one from the street? 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Hey, I’m asking you a question." Ling Xuan took another bite of the meat.

Alexander quickly recollected himself. "I’m not up to anything. I just realized... I really didn’t know you that well, now I want to get close to you and get to know you better, and maybe we can clear up the misunderstanding between us."

"Oh." Ling Xuan muttered even though she wasn’t paying any attention to what he was saying, he lost her the moment he started talking about getting to know her better. As a matter of fact, he was talking to the wrong person.

"So can you tell me why you are doing farm work?" Alexander asked, his eyes narrowing a little bit too seriously. It seemed his plan had worked, after all, to win a woman’s heart, one had to spend money, please her stomach, and shower her with some care.

"You want to work?" Ling Xuan asked bluntly.

Alexander closed his eyes as if he were trying to control his temper. "No." He calmly replied. "I just wanted to know why you are doing it."

Ling Xuan continued stuffing more meat in her mouth. "Don’t talk while eating." She replied, reaching for the bottle of wine.

"Let me help you," Alexander said, also reaching out for the same bottle of wine, their fingers slightly grazed each other.

Alexander froze. He felt a spark that moment, and when he looked at her all he saw was her smiling at him so sweetly, it almost looked magical, his eyes fixated on her lips.

"Are you taking the drink out or not?" Ling Xuan’s irritated voice shattered his little fantasy.

He cleared his throat, avoiding his gaze. He had come to slowly make her fall for him, but why was his plan backfiring against him?

The Laurel he was staring at now, was aloof and cold, nothing like the one who was smiling sweetly in his imagination.

Alexander reached for the wine and popped it open. The sound made Ling Xuan arch her brow in interest. She nodded her head as if taking a note.

Alexander poured the wine into two glasses and handed one to Ling Xuan. He picked up his own glass of wine and turned to Ling Xuan for a cheer, his eyes widened when he saw her gulp all the wine in one go.

He blinked in embarrassment, he cheered to the air, and also gulped his wine in one go. He was beyond frustrated, he didn’t know what to do to engage her in a conversation... yes, it would be weird he knew how to.

After all, he had almost never wooed any woman. And the reason why he was angry at Laurel was that she took his first time. He felt he didn’t have the choice to do it with the person he truly loved.

But looking at the woman next to him, he never knew she was this complex to decipher. One second she looked so soft that it provoked his ego to protect her, and the next second she was like a fierce woman ready to drive a knife through his heart.

By the time Alexander finally snapped out of his thoughts, he was beyond stunned. The meat was gone, and so was the wine, he had to rub his eyes with his hands to confirm he was not imagining things.

Ling Xuan was dabbing a napkin over her mouth. "The food was nice," she said, sparing him a glance. "I’ll head back to my room now."

Alexander stood up, his lips parted but nothing came out. His hands clenched at his sides as he watched her walk away.

He ran his hand through his hair, disheveling the perfectly combed hair. He had noticed she had been buying things in bulk from the notification on the black card Grandma Wayne had given to her.

He wanted to know what she was up to, buying things in bulk, and farming? That doesn’t sound like the wife he married.

......

Laurel stared out of the window in her room, the sky was bright and the sun was shining brightly. Today was the day she had predicted, the day of the extreme heat. She stared at the weather info on her phone.

It was late spring, and the weather was normally around 8-12 degrees Celsius. However, it had made a sharp jump, the temperature was 20 degrees Celsius, and it was still rising.

Just then, a calling number appeared on the upper side of her phone screen. The caller was Mr. Lennox.
