Dada dada!

The sound of gunfire from the rear carriage echoed in the air, as the monsters' growls and their continuous attacks on the train’s armor persisted.

Lin Xian was in a panic. Just then, the train’s front became clearer, and a platform with many tank carriages and the outline of an industrial town appeared on the horizon.

“Yuzhen Station?”

Chen Sixuan nervously checked the driving computer. “This branch line is connected to the Huanxing main track. We should be able to get back to the track ahead.”

“No, we can’t!” Lin Xian fixed his gaze on the track. A tanker carriage was blocking the path of the Infinite Train.

His heart sank, and he immediately applied the emergency brakes.

SCREEECH!!

The train wheels screeched to a halt, sparks flying on the track, the rails turning red with heat. Everyone inside the carriages was thrown off balance by the sudden deceleration, and loud screams filled the air.

As the train came to a halt, debris from the ceiling scattered to the floor. The smell of hot metal from the wheels mixed with a foul odor that began to spread through the train.

“What should we do?”

“Reverse! Break through!” Lin Xian grit his teeth, preparing to reverse the train.

But at that moment, something strange happened. The sounds of the attacks from the rear suddenly ceased, and the gunfire gradually faded. Before anyone could react, KIKI, using the surveillance system, noticed something odd.

“Lin Xian, the monsters seem to have stopped following us.”

“What’s going on?”

“Shu Qin.”

“Lin Xian, all the eerie entities are gone.” The voice of Shu Qin came through the communicator. “I checked, and the rear carriages are intact with no damage.”

“The middle section is fine too.” Da Lou also spoke through the communicator.

In Carriage No. 2, KIKI checked the sentinel system. Although the armor on the outside and the roof of the carriage looked battered, the integrity of the armor was still intact. Only a lot of insect corpses were wedged into the gaps.

Hearing Shu Qin’s words, Lin Xian exchanged confused looks with Chen Sixuan. He immediately stood up and rushed to Carriage No. 2. Sure enough, the sentinel system showed no monsters outside the Infinite Train.

He moved on to Carriage No. 5, opened the door, and a strong, rancid smell hit him. There were some monster remains hanging from the ceiling. But there was no movement outside. He quickly shut the door and turned to KIKI.

“Kid, use the drones to check outside.”

“On it.”

Knowing Lin Xian was extremely cautious, KIKI immediately deployed two drones to begin checking the entire train in the dark.

From the drones’ perspective, the Infinite Train was surrounded by a horrific scene, but fortunately, the interior was intact.

When the drone camera pulled up, Lin Xian immediately saw that, in the distance, a large number of black shadows were quickly disappearing into the woods on the side of the track.

“What’s going on!?” Shasha, standing next to them, exclaimed. “Lin Xian, those monsters seem to be unable to get in.”

Unable to get in?

Lin Xian was taken aback when he heard this.

KIKI furrowed her brows, staring at the screen, and pointed out, “Wait, Lin Xian, this looks like… a kind of… barrier?”

“Yuzhen isn’t a famous place. There are many chemical factories here,” Chen Sixuan said, thinking aloud. “Could there have been some chemical leak that scared the monsters off?”

Lin Xian shook his head and stood up, opening the sunshade to look outside at the empty freight platform. His expression became grave.

“There’s something strange going on. Kid, use the drones to investigate the section of the track ahead. See how long the tanker blocking the track is. Let’s not disembark yet. We need to observe the situation here.”

“Shu Qin, is anyone injured in the back?”

“Lin Xian, everyone’s fine. No issues here.” Shu Qin’s voice came through, and Lin Xian breathed a sigh of relief.

They had barely entered the night when they encountered a series of strange situations that had put Lin Xian on edge. He was still puzzled about how to escape the suffocating eerie insect tide when they suddenly arrived in this eerie town—and the strangest thing was that once they entered, they were safe.

This was a situation Lin Xian had never encountered before. It wasn’t a steel fortress, so he thought, could there be something that was unknowingly blocking the monsters?

Lin Xian walked from Carriage No. 1 to Carriage No. 12, inspecting every carriage. Despite the lingering smell of smoke and anxiety inside, everyone seemed to be fine. Many people in the living quarters were still confused, but some were thankful they had survived.

“Wow, if we had stayed on the train tonight, we’d definitely be doomed with so many monsters around.”

“Yeah, I’m so scared...”

“Lin Xian, are you okay?” In the living area, the young girl Miao Lu saw Lin Xian approaching and stood up enthusiastically to ask.

“I’m fine,” Lin Xian said. “When we entered the station, did those monsters suddenly run off?”

Miao Lu shook her head. “I didn’t notice. It was like, all of a sudden, the monsters just retreated and it became quiet.”

“That’s right,” Shu Qin also came over. “It’s very strange. We’ve never encountered something like this before.”

Lin Xian nodded. “Alright, everyone stay alert. The situation with so many monsters might still happen again, so let’s be mentally prepared.”

The train was covered with eerie entities. Not just Lin Xian, but even people like Shu Qin were caught off guard. If it weren’t for the heavy armor, the dozens of people on board might have ended up as the monsters’ next meal.

Lin Xian continued checking the condition of each carriage with his Mechanical Heart and also began repairing some of the fasteners.

When he reached Carriage No. 3, Ding Junyi called out to him.

Ding Junyi, with a serious expression, pointed to the pot containing the Blood Scourge Flora and said, “I’ve been keeping an eye on it, and just now, the Hell’s Black Chrysanthemum changed.”

Lin Xian’s heart skipped a beat. He quickly walked over and furrowed his brows as he looked at the black chrysanthemum. “The red light... has it dimmed a little?”

“Exactly.”

Ding Junyi nodded. “Not only that, but during the recent fight, I saw a wisp of black smoke being absorbed into it, and the red light weakened a lot afterward.”

“Black smoke…” Lin Xian frowned. “We’ve seen this smoke before when we killed the eerie entities.”

“So, during the recent attack, we must have killed some eerie entities,” Ding Junyi said.

“What does this mean?” Lin Xian asked.

Ding Junyi crossed her arms. “The appearance of Eerie Blood Crystals is also accompanied by this black smoke. According to this logic, the Blood Scourge Flora should have the ability to absorb the power of this black smoke.”

“That makes sense.” Lin Xian’s expression darkened. “But we don’t know what effect or significance this has yet.”

“In the lab, we can’t monitor these changes,” Ding Junyi said. “But at least now we know some of its characteristics. If possible, please try to kill or capture some eerie entities. It’ll help me test the effects of the black smoke produced by their deaths on the Blood Scourge Flora. The more experiments we do, the sooner we can get results.”

Lin Xian blinked. “Wait, did you just say… capture eerie entities?”

Ding Junyi tilted her head slightly, and under her black-framed glasses, her gaze was serious. “Yes. From a scientific perspective, the more experiments we have, the more accurate our conclusions will be.”

Is she speaking human language?

“Forget about capturing them. If any monsters die near the train later, you can observe them.” Lin Xian walked away helplessly. He understood Ding Junyi’s point, but right now, he had no mood for discussing experiments.

Capturing eerie entities? Who would do such a thing? Not in this lifetime.

Lin Xian cursed inwardly.
