Chapter 277 - 246 Yoko the gamer Girl Playing Super Mario 2
Sunday 30 March 1992
Yoko Saejiko, a 5th grader with an impressive talent for video games, sat eagerly in front of her ZEPS console, ready to dive into her next gaming adventure. She had always loved ZEPS titles, and some of her favorite characters included Samus Aran from Metroid. The revelation that the powerful space warrior she had admired was actually a woman had left a deep impression on her. It was rare to see female protagonists in video games well its basically non-existent before Samus, but when ZAGE did introduce them, they were always incredibly well-developed, strong, and memorable. She especially loved Z-Pink, another standout female character, and she wished more games featured heroines like them. Still, she never minded playing male protagonists as long as the game was fun.
Now, she was about to play Super Mario Bros. 2, the only major ZEPS game she hadn't yet tried. She took the cartridge and inserted it into her console, feeling a thrill of anticipation. As the game booted up, she flipped through the usual game materials included in the box. Among them was a collectible Zabo-man card, a feature that had become a staple of ZAGE releases. She turned it over and read the message on the back: "Beat the game with everyone, then I will help you." Yoko's eyes widened.
"Oh? It's like Z-man! So this game has multiple playable characters?" she mused, intrigued by the idea.
Her excitement grew as the title screen loaded. She pressed start, navigating through the menu, but what she saw next made her heart race with delight. There, in the character selection screen, stood not just Mario and his brother Luigi, but also Toad... and Princess Peach! Yoko nearly jumped out of her seat.

"No way! Princess Peach is a playable character?!" she exclaimed, eyes sparkling with excitement.
Without hesitation, she selected Peach and started the first level, World 1-1: Grass Land. The moment Peach landed on the screen, Yoko was in awe. Unlike Mario and Luigi, Peach had a distinct apperance shes look gorgeous in her pink dress—and she could glide for a short time after jumping, making tricky platforming sections much easier. She experimented with the controls, lifting turnips and throwing them at enemies. While Peach's throwing strength was weaker compared to the others, her floating ability more than made up for it.
Yoko played through the level with a big grin, quickly mastering Peach's movement. The more she played, the more she appreciated the careful balance in the game's mechanics. She maneuvered past Shy Guys, avoided tricky jumps, and effortlessly picked up and tossed enemies aside. The level design felt fresh and different compared to the first Mario game, with the vertical platforming adding a whole new dimension to the gameplay. Even the music had a unique, dreamlike quality that made the entire experience feel magical.
As she advanced, she discovered secret areas hidden within vases and dug through sand piles to reveal power-ups. She experimented with different strategies, realizing that each character had strengths that could be useful in various situations. Even though Peach was her favorite, she couldn't wait to try the others and see how they changed the way the game played.
By the time she reached the first boss, Birdo, she was completely immersed. Birdo stood at the end of the stage, spitting eggs toward her in rapid succession. Yoko timed her jumps carefully, catching the eggs midair before throwing them back at Birdo. The enemy's expressions and movements gave it a unique personality, something she didn't expect from a Mario villain. It took three well-placed hits, and with a final satisfying explosion, Birdo was defeated. Yoko cheered, punching the air in triumph.
"Wow Playing with Princess Peach is so much Fun!"
She could already tell she was going to spend hours with Super Mario Bros. 2. The addition of multiple playable characters and Peach's inclusion made it feel special in a way no other Mario game had before. Without wasting another second, she pressed forward, eager to see what other surprises awaited her. The adventure was just beginning, and she was ready for whatever came next.
