Chapter 167: Facade

Sofia and Riven walked through the forest. He looked around while they walked, just watching the different trees, birds, and others, but he also paid attention to the surroundings to know if something was coming their way.

Sofia, on the other hand, followed behind, and she couldn’t put off the thing that he had said a few minutes back. No matter how hard she tried, it simply didn’t make sense to her.

Not being able to hold it back anymore, she decided to ask.

"Riven, you said you respect me for keeping a strong resolve in hiding my true feelings from people. Isn’t doing that dishonest, hiding your real self from people?" she spoke up.

Riven paused for a moment. He placed his hand on his chin as if thinking, then he snapped his finger.

"Ahh!" he exclaimed like he had made a discovery.

He started walking again and began speaking.

"You see, a diamond is kept in a vault, not in the open. Just like a jeweler hides their most precious gems behind layers of protection, we wear a facade—not out of deceit, but to guard what’s important. The world doesn’t always deserve to see the raw shine of who we truly are. Only those who earn our trust, who prove they cherish us and not just our sparkle or your cracks, are given the key to that vault.

The real you is not for the eyes of just anyone, and you should protect the real you, because those that see you might never understand you for who you really are. They’ll judge you, attack you, antagonize you, and despise you.

And even if you don’t really care about that, sometimes it’s better to care about image than to act nonchalant and allow people to build a perspective around you that spits on you.

Sure, a facade might fail one day and the world will see the true you, but when you get there, you’ll get across. For now, we are kids, Nobles, and the weight that hangs above our heads is not light—specifically the daughter of a Duke—so hide yourself from those outside, but not from those that you consider dear," Riven said. He looked back at her with a soft smile.

"You’ll find that those dear to you actually accept you the way you are, took me a while to understand that myself." he said and kept walking.

Sofia looked at his back.

"Why do you think this way, Riven?" she asked. His words hit deep. She couldn’t find any flaw in his thinking right now.

Without saying anything, she followed behind, and after a few minutes of walking, they finally came across another beast—an Orc stood there, and a Rank B above its head.

It was eight feet tall, a dark pink color for its skin. In its hand was a mace made from a small tree.

The moment the Orc laid eyes on the both of them, it stomped its feet on the ground, and suddenly, some glowing purple patterns appeared on its body.

Riven felt mana surge through the Orc the moment those marks showed up. The Orc launched forward, each step making the earth tremble. It leaped into the air and swung down at full speed.

Riven didn’t flinch. He created a flame wall at just the moment before the impact. The mace slammed into the flame wall, but the wall was broken apart, and the Orc was also knocked back.

"It’s crazy strong. Does it have something to do with those markings? Maybe," Riven thought. He was about to attack the Orc, but suddenly, a lightning bolt as thick as an arm tore through the air and slammed into the Orc, blasting a hole into its shoulder.

The Orc stumbled back and roared in pain. Riven looked back and saw Sofia with her staff stretched out.

"I’ll let you have this one," she said. Riven smiled and lunged forward. Twilight erupted in flames as he leaped into the air and slashed down, killing the Orc in one slash.

"Riven, watch out!" Sofia yelled, and then fired a bolt of lightning, slamming into the Orc that was rushing toward Riven. The blast struck it on the side of the abdomen.

The Orc had the same markings as the first one, so it showed the same type of strength. Riven lunged at it. He went for the leg, slashing one and sending it to the ground.

"This one is all you," he said and retreated to give her a clear line of attack. She smirked and raised her staff. A magical circle formed just above the Orc, and then a bolt of lightning shot out and hit it right in the head, killing it instantly.

"It seems working together makes it faster. We are taking down B-ranked easily," Riven said.

"It shouldn’t be this easy, but you are just insanely strong," she said.

"Na, I’m not that strong. Look at you, you one-shot the Orc right in the head," Riven said.

"I’m a mage. I have the capacity to cause heavy destruction with spells, but the more powerful a spell is, the more time it requires.

You, on the other hand, are far too destructive for someone that isn’t a mage," she said.

Riven gave a cheeky smile and didn’t give any response. Since they had dealt with those two, they started walking.

Riven decided to take a look at his stats to see if there had been any changes he didn’t pay attention to.

"System, stats," he called out.
