An Extra's POV: My Three Fiancees Hate Me-Chapter 145: Getting a Pardon
Chapter 145: Getting a Pardon
The office went quiet when Riven spoke; everyone stared at Riven. His classmates were confused as to why he said that—after all, he was the one telling them that they would be taking Lance back. Why the sudden change?
"Mr. Riven, I understand your animosity toward Lance, but..."
"No, it’s nothing like that, and I also didn’t finish what I had to say," Riven cut her short. "Forgive me if I came off as rude. What I was saying is that what Lance did is worthy of death, and there is no sugar-coating it in any way.
But, he is still the chosen of Lumis, and I believe for this time and this time alone, we should grant him a pardon," Riven said.
"Hmmm? What you’re trying to say is to completely remove all his crimes and wipe the slate clean?" Elena asked.
"Yes, that’s what I am asking for, swept under the rug," Riven said.
Elena had a look of confusion on her face, so she decided to indulge Riven and understand exactly why he said something like that.
"Is there a reason why you want us to do something like that?" she asked.
"Because if you clear his name, he has received mercy he didn’t deserve. And if a repeat happens, you are within all rights to give the full extent of the punishment to him without any hesitation," Riven said.
"Hmmm, your point is clear and makes sense, but that is only on the surface level, Mr. Riven. What you are suggesting is the possibility of him doing it again.
What I want to do is something that will entirely remove whatever thoughts he has toward doing something like this again," she said, looking Riven right in the eye as she waited for his response.
"I understand, Headmistress, but I’d like to say a few more things. And I hope you’ll give it good thought. Lance was at a sensitive moment, and that moment was capitalized on by his seniors, and they caused him to do what he did," Riven said.
"Riven, you are a smart kid, so please don’t play dumb here," Quin said.
"Indeed, like Quin said, you are smart. Don’t play dumb. They instigated it with their words, but all they did was use words. There is no crime in speaking.
But the person that carried out the crime was Lance. Regardless of what your seniors did, and how it looks, it holds no ground. If I told you to take a sword and stab me through my chest, would you do it?
The same thing relates to the case of Lance—he held the sword, he unleashed the full power of his blessing, and he harmed students," she said. She understood what Riven was trying to do, but what she didn’t understand was why—why would he try to make it seem like the actions of Lance were not heavy, when he was the direct target of all Lance’s aggression?
Lance did all this because he hated the fact that Riven was on top. He wanted to take the position. That is the reason all this happened.
’She clearly knows what I want, but she doesn’t want to let me have it simply. She wants to make me tell it. I don’t want to, but it doesn’t seem like she’ll let me off without something tangible, Riven thought’. He racked his mind for what to say, and after a while, he finally came to the conclusion on what to say.
"I guess nothing really makes Lance less guilty, but you also asked what we as the class think, and I have to say that we all forgive Lance and have agreed to accept him back.
I know you won’t believe this as it sounds unlikely, but Lance still remains a member of our class, and we feel what happened was simply a situation of bad timing and over-spilling emotions.
And to back up our stance, I’ll be set responsible for any actions that Lance takes in the future, and if he should ever repeat what he did again, I’ll be the one to strike him down without fail—even if it costs my life," Riven said.
Lance looked up at Riven when he heard that. What the hell was Riven thinking right now? It didn’t make any sense for him to do all this.
"Hmmmm, you are willing to bear the responsibility for his actions? If that’s the case, then I will respect you as the rank one of the first years and release Lance without punishment.
But you now have the responsibility to ensure that Lance remains on the right path, and you must handle any issues that arise from him in the best way possible—not limited to, but including, lethal force," Elena stated.
Someone that heard what she said might not fully understand the gravity of what she had just done now, and how it fit into what Riven had planned—but it was all easy.
He wanted a loose yet effective control over Lance the Hero. A control that allowed him to watch over him, and learn all there is to know about Lance without it being obvious.
Despite everything, Lance was a pivotal figure in the story—the original main character—and if Riven could use him to the best of his ability, he would probably be able to stop the threat coming to this world.
Elena didn’t understand the full nature of what Riven was planning, but she felt like she had a good grasp.
"Since that’s all, Lance will be released, and the rest of you can head back. Riven, you stay behind," she said.
Everyone left the office one after the other. Quin released Lance and let him out before closing the door. He stayed inside with Riven and Elena.
"Alright now, Riven, we are alone here. Why did you want control over him?" she asked bluntly.
"It’s not full control, just a very long leash on a confused pet. You can’t allow a weapon that dangerous to be swayed by anyone’s voice—and who better to keep him in check than the one person he despises?" Riven said.
