Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Thunder Strike at the Opening
Dave was once accused in court of illegally distributing adult videos in public places and leaking his employers' private information. He also admitted to a history of group sports and drug abuse, and even to having had fantasies about a neighbor's mother.
At the time, Texas courts were overwhelmed with the sentencing of a white police officer, so they didn't pay much attention to this, leaving Dave with unresolved issues.
The plaintiff's lawyer, who was also Dave's ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend and an old classmate of his, clung stubbornly to these pieces of evidence.
But before the plaintiff's lawyer could even take action, the life history Dave himself listed made his opponent - and his ex's current beau and old classmate who was a lawyer - start to question his own life choices.
Dude, are you seriously trying to reckon with your past? Stop it, I'm begging you!!
I just wanted to win a draw, settle the debt dispute, not get you locked up!
Considering how your girlfriend is so moist, screaming your name hysterically at night while grasping the sheets, just stop talking!
Please! I am begging you!
Dave was notoriously known as a lawyer who always lost his cases. He'd honestly spill the beans about everything, and he never stood a chance of winning a bit.
During a court confrontation, he shocked everyone present: the judge, the jury, his ex-girlfriend, the plaintiff's lawyer, and all the security personnel in the audience...
He was sentenced to one year and six months.
After paying bail, he was essentially declaring bankruptcy.
No house, no car, no savings; he was forced onto the streets.
Such talent!!
Allen Zhang couldn't describe how he was feeling.
That such a man really existed.
"Goodnight, Allen! Goodnight, Simone." Dave waved his hand and sauntered off.
"Goodnight."
Watching him go, Allen Zhang could only marvel that this truly was the magical United States.
He took out 15 US Dollars and handed it to Simone, who was already a bit drunk, completely plastered, and unconscious.
"Here's the money I borrowed from you during the day, paying it back now, so we're even, Simone! Hey! Are you still conscious?" Allen Zhang nudged her shoulder.
He then casually stuffed the money into her pocket.
"Even? Hmm... So what about the fact that you saw me naked? Are all you Asians so irresponsible?"
Simone slurred her words with dissatisfaction, pressing up against him and plopping down on Allen Zhang's lap.
She wrapped her arms around his neck; her breath smelled of alcohol, and he could even feel her body heat.
Allen Zhang felt numb.
Wait, had he forgotten something!?
Suddenly, Allen Zhang remembered something and turned to look.
He saw Lori sitting quietly in the corner, nearly invisible the whole time, looking up at the starry sky, lost in thought.
Allen Zhang cleared his throat to interrupt her reverie.
Lori slowly came back to reality and turned to give him a look. When she saw the two of them in such a stacked position, her gaze turned curious.
She gave him a knowing look.
Speaking with a deep, husky voice that only decades of phlegm and smoking could produce, "Goodnight, buddy. Hope you have a pleasant night."
She lit up a specially seasoned cigarette for herself, grabbed a bottle of alcohol, and her tall frame suddenly sprang up.
She turned, pulling on her black leather jacket, and limped into the darkness.
Off in the distance, you could hear him humming a tune.
It seemed to be a song in Chinese?
Mom's Kiss.
But he wasn't cursing anyone.
Because Allen Zhang had heard it before, and the song was indeed called Mom's Kiss.
"In that faraway little mountain village, little oh little mountain village, my dear mother, her hair has turned white..."
This Black guy definitely had some kind of story!

Turning back to look at the nearly unconscious Simone, her drool soaking his shoulder, he didn't indulge her bad habit but instead hoisted her up and tossed her into the tent.
He then extinguished the campfire and manually switched off the solar light hanging outside the tent.
"Goodnight."
Allen Zhang zipped up the tent with a swift and decisive turn, then walked away.
"Fxxk!!"
After the footsteps faded away in the distance, low cursing could be heard from inside the tent, along with the sound of someone furiously pounding on the bedding and pillows.
But soon after, low panting noises began to fill the air.
Allen Zhang had no idea he was branded as "worse than an animal."
How unwilling he was to offer a helping hand.
He really was too stingy.
Tomorrow, Simone's fingers are bound to be much cleaner than usual.
Upon returning to the No. 19 bridge hole, the light in Dominic's tent had already gone out.
Allen Zhang went back into his own tent and quickly fell asleep and into deep slumber.
The next day.
Without fail, Allen Zhang was awakened by the notification sound of "Daily Info."
He grabbed his phone groggily, unlocked the screen, and glanced at it.
Sudden Thunderstrike!!
He became completely alert in an instant.
[Daily Info: Your lovely neighbor Simone cursed you out a thousand times last night while drunk, said you're not a man at all, and fiercely took care of her physical needs using her fingers to vent her frustrations on you.]
[Daily Info: Homeless Stephen stole $160 and hid it under the Kajin Bridge in sewage drain No. 4, along with three low-quality cigars and a bottle of imitation 1800 Sirena Del Deseo (Desire Mermaid) silver tequila. Details: The lost wallet and ID photos were discarded in a black trash can in alley No. 8, and those who help recover them will receive the gratitude and a reward from the owner.]
[Daily Info: The Green Word Shelter where Rena resides is short-staffed today due to multiple staff vacations. At 15:30 this afternoon, a public service organization will be delivering a shipment of tents and relief supplies; she urgently needs to hire day laborers for unloading.]
Allen Zhang sat up, scratching his bird's nest hair, questioning his life.
Seems that black girl really has some thoughts about me.
No way, we've only met for a day and it's come to this?
What would happen if we got to know each other better? I don't even dare to think about it!
Allen Zhang had to admit that he was really too charming.
People in the United States are also too direct in matters of the heart.
But even more importantly, he cared about another matter.
Why isn't there any info about the Bali Relief Meal Truck today?
Why?
Without the Bali relief meal, I'm going to die!!!
Glancing at the calendar, he realized that today was Saturday.
Everybody's off work on weekends.
Fxxk!!
That's the problem with Americans, who has ever seen a public service organization taking breaks on weekends like clockwork?
Public workers should be working overtime ruthlessly, contributing to public service, and becoming pillars of the nation!
With anger brewing inside, Allen Zhang got out of bed. Luckily, the other two pieces of information were still useful, at least he didn't have to pick trash on the streets today.
Time to go do some hard labor and move bricks.
Fortunately, he knew Rena and could use his connection with Dominic to pull strings on his behalf, and he might even get to take a shower at her place.
He didn't bother waking up Dominic, who was still asleep; obviously, he was the type to sleep in until noon, a real lazy bugger.
Allen Zhang squeezed out what little precious water he had to hastily wash his face and rinse his mouth.
Looking left and right in the worn-out mirror, his beard was scruffy, and his hair greasy.
A sexy tough guy; compared to when he first arrived, he lost some of the fresh sunshine vibe but gained more experience, world-weariness, and oiliness.
Such is the life of a homeless man.
Allen Zhang didn't care much about his personal appearance anymore. It's useless to care about that when you can't even eat your fill, he even became too lazy to go for a run, feeling like he didn't have the energy, becoming more decadent.
I've fallen so low!!
After lightly jogging for a little while to warm up, he decisively chose to conserve his energy.
Before making sure he could eat his fill, he was not going to burn any more calories.
Leaving the No. 19 bridge hole and passing through the tent camp, he glanced at Simone's tent.
She wasn't stirring today; the bicycle was still parked nearby, definitely not planning to miss any chance to recuperate during her days off.
Good, otherwise Allen Zhang really didn't know how to face someone who fantasized about him, seeing Simone's face would certainly set his mind wandering.
Coincidentally, Allen Zhang soon encountered the waking Legal Pioneer Dave at the crossroad.
