Chapter 36: Chapter 36

Lily POV

Some hours later...

I was in school and was struggling to keep my eyes open. The early morning training session had drained me more than I had expected and now, sitting in the air-conditioned classroom with comfortable chairs and table, my eyelids felt impossibly heavy.

Luckily, I was seated next to the girl who had warned me about Kai’s cousin – Kevin. The girl seemed so focused on the lectures and was jotting down every word that came out of the mouth of the lecturer while I was still battling with sleep.

When the professor had called on me to answer a question, I had panicked for a split second. My mind was a foggy mess and I had no idea what the question was, let alone answering. But just as I was about to stammer out a response, the girl nudged me subtly and pointed to a section of the textbook.

I quickly scanned the text and managed to put together a coherent answer, earning a nod of approval from the professor but after that, I slept even more.

Finally, the class was over. Immediately, I turned to my savior a wide smile on my face. This was also a chance for me to interact with her properly, and get to know her a bit better, even her name before she runs off like before.

“Thank you so much for helping me out today. I would have embarrassed myself,” I said with a laugh.

“It’s fine,” the girl said with a smile. “Seems you were up all night?”

“Far from it,” I hid a yawn at the back of my hand. “I’m sorry if I seemed out of it – it’s just that, I got up early for training, and I’m just... exhausted. I didn’t know the training would take a toll on me like this,”.

The girl raised an eyebrow, her eyes widening with surprise. “Training? As in warrior training?” she asked.

“Yeah,” I nodded “The early morning sessions. I wasn’t expecting it to be as intense as ...”.

The girl’s expression shifted from curiosity and surprise to admiration. “Only the elite families in our pack send their kids to those sessions,” she said, sounding both impressed and puzzled “It’s not something everyone gets to do. You must have a lot of responsibility in the future. I don’t envy you,”.

That was when it dawned on me that I was being treated with a level of care and privilege that only the elites could unlock. I hadn’t even realized I had been treated well. Imagine, I was staying with the Alpha’s sister in a magnificent house where I’d not lift my hands to do any chore, go to the best school in the pack and now this.

The thought made me uneasy. Was it because I was the daughter of an Alpha? If so, did that mean the Alpha of this pack had certain expectations from me? Just like the girl beside said... Did Kai need me to do anything for the pack in the future?

The questions swirled in my mind, adding to my already fatigued body.

We walked together towards the campus café in comfortable silence. I was thinking of the best way to get her name and maybe ask her if she wanted to be friends. I’ve never had any friends before, so I had no idea what to do.

The café was already filled with students, talking and chattering excitedly. No one cared about me... in this world... in this place, I was also a student and not the girl without a wolf. As we neared the food counter, I suddenly felt the urge to repay the girl’s kindness, at least in some small way. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

“Can I please buy you a drink?” I asked tentatively. “I know it’s nothing compared to how much of a help you’ve been to me since I started here but I hope you’d understand the gesture behind it,”.

The girl laughed, her eyes twinkling with warmth. “You’re the first person to beg to buy a drink for me and I think it’s cute. So, yes... you may,”.

“Oh!” I smiled looking down with embarrassment and also happy that she was being kind to me. “Thank you,” I said and reached into my pocket for some cash. There was no money there.

I could already feel my cheek turning red. I fumbled in my bag for my wallet and opened it. But my heart sank in dismay, I didn’t have enough money to afford a drink for one person. I had spent what little money I had in the first few days of arriving here and now I was completely broke.

I didn’t also want to use the bank card my father gave me. I had a feeling that he might have cancelled it or better still, he might trace me down to this place and I didn’t want additional problems for me and Kai. Also, I had promised myself that I wouldn’t rely on him anymore – not after everything that had happened and I intend to keep that promise.

“I, Uh... I’m sorry,” I said my cheeks flushing with embarrassment. “I didn’t realize I’m out of cash. I’ve made a lot of expenses that I didn’t even notice I have nothing left. I’m so sorry,”.

“Come on,” the girl smiled “I don’t mind at all and I understand how it feels when you think you have money but you have no money. Besides, it’s just a drink, you can always treat me to it another day, okay?”

I felt a wave of relief wash over me. I hadn’t realized how much I had been worrying about making a good impression in my new life, especially, this girl that had already shown me kindness. I should start looking for a job as soon as possible to avoid embarrassment like this in the future not just for the girl, but also for myself. I need money to take care of my needs to a greater extent.

“Thank you,” I murmured again.

We found a table and sat down and the girl asked. “So, are you from outside the pack? You’ve mentioned severally that you’re new here?”
