Chapter 1846: The Fire Extinguished (Part 2)

When the news came out, it was a typical fire plague day for everyone.

At the time, Garan was reinforcing the cryogenic shell he placed on several people.

One had to know that this process was still theoretical even in Terran. There were still so many biological and engineering problems before anyone could safely do it under Terran technology.

Somehow, Garan managed to do it, though he had to renew it every day.

It was not perfect, and they all knew some of these people would succumb, but they felt that— at least for a small portion of them—what Garan did gave them a real chance to survive by delaying their deaths until they find a cure.

It was difficult. He had to keep them in a cryostable phase, between solid and liquid, as it would prevent diffusion and decay, while not lethally damaging the tissues.

They reckoned that whenever this might succeed, it would be on the strong people. As for how they would be after they get thawed, it wouldn’t be worse than inevitable death from fire plague.

When the cure was developed, these people were the first ones to be tested for it. The doctors arrived with the cure, and Garan could finally thaw the men, albeit one by one. The plan was to administer the cure one by one, to whoever survived this state.

Sadly, when Garan thawed them, half of them died immediately. It was a sad time, but they knew these people would’ve died earlier—and much more painfully— if they hadn’t done what they had. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

When it was Mauru’s turn, they heaved a breath of relief to see that he was alive, even if barely so.

Mauru was one of the people who, fortunately, still had a beating heart, and for now, it seemed like his limbs didn’t have to be cut yet. Without further ado, the cure was injected into the survivors’ bloodstreams.

The healers were also on standby and then healed him as soon as the cure was administered. It was supposed to recover his body’s health while the cure worked against the illness itself.

There was medical equipment around, and although Mauru didn’t recover his consciousness quite yet, the healer confirmed that it was, indeed, working.

Volohov smiled. "The man’s family had been waiting for a long time," he said. "Time to finally give them some good news."

...

"The cure has been found!!"

The announcement resounded across the territory and, very quickly, throughout the region and the allied territories.

People started to celebrate, but more grounded ones immediately saw the challenges: How many cures could there be at this time?

Immediately, thousands of people started to mobilize, heading straight to Alterra in hopes of getting ahead of others in obtaining the cure!

Speaking of the cure, it was another joint effort between the alchemists with an interesting serendipitous moment.

One part of this was the realization that the water that water users condensed themselves was the best base they could have. The rationale was that the aether worked differently and was much more concentrated in water condensed by elementalists.

In order to help them out, they created a vapor room where the water users would have continuous and an abundance of water to condense.

Like how fire made by elementalists would not be easily extinguished, how the wind made by wind elementalists had denser particles, and how earth created by earth elementalists had increased defense abilities, the water condensed by water elementalists was designed to hold a lot of aether, stable even when manipulated with it.

And Alterra, including its Lord, had a lot of water elementalists.

The cure worked even after the final stage— as long as they were alive and healthy enough to handle their bodies fighting violently against the pathogens.

As for their distributor territories and the cities that were in line to buy the formula, even if they didn’t have as many water elementalists, as long as they had the Spring of Life, they would be fine. Since they sold the formula to cities, then this was no problem.

Speaking of the spring, this could’ve really helped Alterra mass-produce the cure much faster (after all, the elementalists get tired, too) but, sadly, that building type was available at the next tier. Not to mention, outside of situations like these, that building type had minimal uses.

That said, for others who had this, they actually managed to create a lot of the cure, much more than what Alterra could produce.

Then, after the victims were cured, there was still aftercare.

For daily maintenance, they were to drink minty tea leaves crushed raw or steeped into tea, which would induce sweating and mild purging. This would completely rid them of the dirt for those who had been thoroughly affected.

The best case would need elementalist healers, which were fortunately not too rare in Alterra. Combined with an endless stream of mana potions and mana cookies, this resource wasn’t too difficult, so a few people who actually had access to this stage so their recovery was faster and more comfortable than others.

The problem was the permanent recovery and the aftermath, and whether they would be able to regain the abilities that they lost.

Jane Yu’s eyes were red as she held on to her child’s hands. He had odd-shaped scars around his body, as if it cracked from within.

Like everyone who showed symptoms, he had a burning fever that was extremely painful to watch, let alone experience. Jane heard of the description— as if one was literally being boiled alive—and her heart clenched in pain even at the memories.

During those times, Jane could only take care of her son the best she could. She thanked the gods that she was a water elementalist, but not for anything else but the fact that she could stay by the child’s side.

Further, she could also contribute to the cure somehow. According to others, the amount of water she condensed was comparable to that of several levels higher than her.

In exchange, they were to prioritize her son to receive the cure, which had been administered.

Jane’s tears stopped very early, and she was just focused on keeping the child as comfortable as possible. The cure itself was not painless, and at stage 3 it was particularly painful.

She gripped his little hand as he endured the pain of the cure, fighting against the virus in his body. Jane could feel his body burning one second, and freezing the next.

It was terrifying.

What could she do to ease his pain?

Unexpectedly, while she was holding him, bright light surrounded them, and she blinked when she saw water condensing around her.
