Chapter 475: Chapter 475: The Proposal

"Shi Fei, Xiao Lie, what are you two doing in the room with the door shut so tightly?"

Old Mrs. Xu’s voice rang out, pulling the two people in the room down from the clouds and back to reality.

Yun Shifei broke free from Cheng Lie, took a couple of breaths, and tried to respond in her calmest voice, "It’s nothing, Grandma. I’ll come out in just a little while, just a moment."

"Why is the door shut tight? Hurry up and come out," Old Mrs. Xu insisted.

Standing at the doorway, she shook her head. They had only been inside for a few minutes; surely they wouldn’t have had time to do anything inappropriate.

Still, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of worry.

After all, this was her precious granddaughter, always so well-behaved and pure. If Cheng Lie really had certain thoughts in mind, wouldn’t he have complete control over her?

Yun Shifei sat up from the bed.

Today, she was wearing a turtleneck sweater, so there wasn’t anything too suspicious visible. Still, her clothes and hair were a little disheveled.

She casually combed through her hair and met Cheng Lie’s deep, dark eyes.

There was amusement hidden in the depths of the man’s gaze.

Feeling self-conscious under his stare, Yun Shifei muttered, "Why are you looking at me and smiling like that?"

"I just thought, Feifei has grown up—you’re getting better and better at lying."

Yun Shifei: "..."

"Well, it’s not uncommon; people do change," Yun Shifei replied awkwardly.

Watching her get a little sulky, Cheng Lie couldn’t help but chuckle again. His eyes lingered on Yun Shifei’s lips, which were a bit swollen, like a blooming, delicate flower—irresistibly alluring.

But he knew he had to restrain himself here, to avoid arousing suspicion. With that thought, he shifted his gaze away.

Once Yun Shifei tidied herself up enough to look as she had a moment ago, she told Cheng Lie to straighten out his own things and pushed the door open to find Old Mrs. Xu.

Cheng Lie unpacked his luggage and set everything in its place, listening intently to the conversation between Yun Shifei and Old Mrs. Xu outside. The voices weren’t very loud, but his keen ears picked up every word.

"Shi Fei, let me tell you, before you’re married, you have to protect yourself properly."

"Grandma, don’t worry. I know what I’m doing."

"You silly, naive girl, I still need to watch over you carefully so you don’t get deceived by anyone..."

"Didn’t you compliment him earlier today and say he seems like a good person, though?"

"Silly girl! You think you can tell how he’ll treat you for a lifetime just from one look? Don’t you know, people’s hearts are the easiest to change."

...

Inside the room, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, so Cheng Lie clearly heard the entire conversation between Yun Shifei and Old Mrs. Xu.

If it had been in the past, hearing such words would have likely made him angry, not caring in the least about others’ feelings.

But now, his heart was unusually calm.

He thought to himself, his Feifei had many people who loved her within her family. Although she had suffered so much in the past, now, her life was surrounded only by love.

And he thought again—he must never become the kind of person who would break her heart.

During their stay in Nantian Town, Yun Shifei took Cheng Lie on a whirlwind of food tours.

She was familiar with the area from her frequent visits and knew all the best spots to find delicious food. After all, for someone who loved to eat as much as she did, her favorite moments were the ones spent sharing meals with Cheng Lie.

That’s how their relationship began in the first place—sharing meals, which brought them closer with each bite.

When she noticed Xu Yuejiao in a bad mood, Yun Shifei invited her to join them, but by the next day, Xu Yuejiao stubbornly refused to go out with them again.

"Yun Shifei, you’re so cruel! I have no grudge against you—why would you drag me out and make me a third wheel to suffer like this?" Xu Yuejiao exclaimed dramatically, making it clear she could no longer tolerate being their tagalong.

Yun Shifei and Cheng Lie displaying their affection in front of her was too much for her to handle. She didn’t want to play the third wheel anymore.

Yun Shifei was bewildered. She turned to Cheng Lie and asked, "Did we even show off our love in front of her?"

She hadn’t noticed anything. Walking hand in hand didn’t count as showing off, did it?

Cheng Lie agreed, saying, "No, we’ve been pretty normal."

All he had done was finish off Yun Shifei’s leftovers when she couldn’t eat anymore.

All he had done was casually brush away a crumb of cake from the corner of her lips.

Such gestures had long become habits to them, so Yun Shifei hadn’t even realized they might be construed differently.

It wasn’t Feifei’s fault, after all. But perhaps Xu Yuejiao really ought to figure out how to resolve her own emotional dilemmas.

After spending a few days in Nantian Town, Yun Shifei returned to the city.

Before she left, Old Mrs. Xu reminded Cheng Lie again and again to take good care of Yun Shifei.

Understanding her lingering concerns, Cheng Lie assured her, "Grandma, I’ll prove with my actions that I genuinely care about Feifei."

Words alone could never fully convince someone; actions were what truly mattered.

Hearing these straightforward, non-flashy promises, Old Mrs. Xu felt much more at ease with him.

After all, even Yun Tiancheng had accepted Cheng Lie, so how could she not trust him? When it came to judging people, she had faith in Yun Tiancheng’s instincts.

For this visit, Cheng Lie stayed at the Yun Family home.

The Yun Family’s villa had plenty of guest rooms.

Over the years, Cheng Lie hadn’t visited the Yun Family often, and his memories of the place were mostly from his high school days.

The layout upstairs was still quite similar to how it had been before—he even remembered taking naps in one of the guest rooms.

"You can stay here," Xu Ya said, nodding toward Cheng Lie.

"Thank you, Auntie," Cheng Lie replied politely.

After setting down his belongings, he came downstairs, and their golden retriever circled around him excitedly.

Yun Shifei was petting the dog’s fur when a thought suddenly came to her. She asked Cheng Lie, "Xiao Lie, do you know why I chose this dog back then?"

"Why?"

"Because of you," Yun Shifei said, her eyes curving into a playful smile.

"Back then, I thought you might have autism, and golden retrievers are like little angels—they can heal and warm your heart. So I hoped you’d spend more time with the dog. Who would’ve thought it would actually bite you?"

She remembered how panicked she had been back then, rushing him to get a rabies shot.

Cheng Lie stopped for a moment, looking at the golden retriever nudging his leg. Its bright, cheerful face was indeed soothing.

She had always been helping him and healing him back then.

That was one of the reasons he wanted to spend this life loving her with all his heart.

How could a girl like her not deserve his unwavering devotion?

Thinking this, Cheng Lie’s gaze deepened. He reached out to gently stroke Yun Shifei’s hair and said, "After you graduate from college, let’s get married."

Yun Shifei froze slightly upon hearing this.

It was such an ordinary setting—they were just sitting on the couch. Xu Ya was busy in the kitchen, and Yun Tiancheng was upstairs organizing something.

Aside from the two of them, the only other presence in the room was their dog.

Sunlight streamed warmly through the windows, casting a comforting glow over the chilly winter day.

In such an unremarkable moment, Cheng Lie... had proposed to her?

Still, Yun Shifei wasn’t one to care about grand settings.

As long as the two of them were happy together, that was all that mattered.

She loved Cheng Lie, and Cheng Lie loved her. Even if their days were simple and ordinary, that would be enough.

Her lips curved into a smile, as soft as a cat’s, and she replied, "Alright."

They decided their future as casually as if they were discussing what to eat that day.
