Xia Chuyi finished curving Yue Ya’er.
She knew that what was supposed to come had finally arrived.
Inside the main room, Xia Mei was relentless, clamoring, “Xia Lan, on what grounds did you snatch Xia Chuyi’s marriage? Even if the He Family wants someone else, it should have been me instead; I am the eldest in the family.”
“Grandpa, Grandma, you be the judges. I am the eldest daughter of the family. I am 21 this year and still haven’t found a suitable in-laws’ house,” Xia Mei, hands on her hips, said with a face full of grievance, “This time, since Xia Chuyi is giving up the marriage arrangement, logically and emotionally, shouldn’t it be passed to me?”
Xia Chuyi, standing at the doorway, couldn’t help but snicker.
Her dear cousin certainly didn’t disappoint her.
...
“Who is outside?” Grandpa Xia, believing that family disgrace should not be shared with outsiders, immediately chastised when he heard the noise.
“It’s me!” Xia Chuyi raised her voice.
As her voice fell, she already entered the room.
Upon entering, all three families were present.
Grandpa Xia and Grandma Xia were seated in the middle, with others to the sides.
Grandpa and Grandma Xia, having served as servants in a landlord’s house in their youth, carried themselves with great authority.
“You’re back?” Grandma Xia, with a not so pleasant expression, asked Xia Chuyi merely as a routine kindness.
“Yes, I am back,” Xia Chuyi replied with a smile, obediently.
“Ah, Chuyi is back?” Aunt Xia, standing by the side, cheerfully came up to pull her, “We were just talking about you!”
Xia Chuyi sidestepped, avoiding Aunt Xia, who just smiled, not embarrassed at all.
“You’re talking about me, what about me?” Xia Chuyi, still smiling, asked innocently.
“Chuyi…” Suddenly, Mother Xia, sitting in a corner, gently called out, her eyes already red and swollen like walnuts.
Aunt Xia’s expression changed, about to explain, but Xia Mei, standing in the center confronting Xia Lan, snorted and spoke,
“Xia Chuyi, you know how your mother is, it’s just her broken character. We didn’t bully her. My mom just asked her a few questions, and she started crying miserably.”
In this family, the only girls who dare to speak so bluntly were Xia Mei and Xia Chuyi.
Xia Chuyi looked coolly at her older cousin, noting Xia Mei clad in a floral outfit that accentuated her dark complexion, making her appear rather plain. Yet, she herself felt otherwise, often believing others were envious of her.
Inferior in appearance, inferior in character, yet counting on the fact that she has many brothers, Xia Mei often felt she rightfully deserved to be the princess of the Xia Family.
Unsatisfied by her scrutiny, Xia Mei felt some discontent, but because she needed Xia Chuyi’s help for her desired matter, she just snorted, turned her face away, and did not argue with Xia Chuyi.
Silence ensued until the sobbing of Mother Xia suddenly burst out.
“My poor Chuyi…”
This was upon seeing Xia Chuyi; all the grievance surged forth.
“Second son’s…” Grandma Xia was about to scold, but was interrupted by Xia Chuyi, “Enough, mom, stop crying! Haven’t you always told me, I am the daughter of the Xia Family? Since I am a daughter of the Xia Family, even though I have no father, could Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt, Uncle possibly treat me unfairly?”
Xia Chuyi said calmly without losing her composure.
“I, Chuyi…” Mother Xia’s sobbing paused.
For the sake of the Xia Family, weren’t all these sacrifices worth it? Then why cry at all?
