After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 70: He Said: "Just an Adopted Daughter. Is She Even Worthy?
"I said, I want all of Churchill Corp."
Wyatt Sterling looked William Churchill straight in the eye and said, enunciating every word.
"The Churchill Family’s hundred-year foundation, the lifeblood of generations... and you expect me to just hand it over because of one threat?" William Churchill chastised Wyatt Sterling. ’His appetite is simply too big!’
Wyatt Sterling’s tone was cool. "Before the New Year, you partnered with the Arden tourism industry to build a cruise ship, the Oasis. On its third day at sea, it hit a hidden reef and sank. Sixty-seven people died."
William Churchill’s expression froze.
The nightmare from before the New Year resurfaced, suffocating him.
The butler standing nearby shot him a puzzled look. William Churchill waved his hand. "Get out. And close the door!"
"Yes, sir. Yes, sir."
The butler hastily retreated and closed the door.
A thin layer of sweat had already beaded on William Churchill’s forehead. He said to Wyatt Sterling, "Natural disasters are unavoidable. This matter was resolved before the New Year. What influence could bringing it up now possibly have?"
Wyatt Sterling said coolly, "If I recall correctly, it was later almost exposed that the Oasis failed its quality inspection before launch. The disaster was caused by an internal cover-up. You paid one billion to buy their silence. And that doesn’t even include the compensation payments. All in all, you could say a massive chunk was bitten out of the Churchill Family’s finances."
William Churchill’s expression grew uglier. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"It’s fine if you don’t understand. I can explain it to you slowly." Wyatt Sterling shifted his crossed legs, his posture relaxed.
William Churchill had been telling himself to stay calm, to not be affected by anything Wyatt Sterling said.
But Wyatt Sterling just had to bring up the Oasis. That was his worst nightmare...
Wyatt Sterling took in William Churchill’s reaction and curled his lip, his expression unreadable.
After a moment of contemplation, he spoke again. "We both know that you took the fall for the Arden tourism industry with that one billion. The Hawthorne Family behind the tourism industry dominates Arden. In the end, you were just afraid of offending them."
William Churchill snorted heavily. "Since you already know, why spell it out?"
Wyatt Sterling said, "I’m spelling it out because I want to tell you that I have the ability to help the Churchill Family get back on its feet. In the future, you won’t have to take the fall for anyone or walk on eggshells around them. This would be a win-win partnership."
William Churchill was skeptical. "You’re the kind of person who would even backstab your own family. Why should I believe you?"
’His ambition is too great.’ William Churchill simply didn’t believe him.
Besides, anyone can talk a big game, but not everyone can deliver.
Wyatt Sterling narrowed his eyes. "So there’s nothing to discuss?"
"I don’t want to take that risk. There’s no need to say anything more." William Churchill’s stance was clear.
Wyatt Sterling wasn’t annoyed. "I hear your son not only does drugs, but he also encourages others to use them in a group. That’s quite serious. A situation like this... will most likely lead to a prison sentence."
After speaking, without even glancing at how pale William Churchill had become, Wyatt Sterling calmly took out his phone and dialed Mason Cheney. "William Churchill has chosen to abandon his younger son. No need to wait. Call the police."
"Wait—"
William Churchill strode over, holding out a hand to stop him. "Don’t. Don’t call the police yet."
Wyatt Sterling raised his eyes. "Didn’t you say there was nothing to discuss?"
William Churchill suppressed a gutful of rage from being threatened and tried to reply calmly, "Wyatt, we can talk more."
"Talk, or stall for time?" Wyatt Sterling’s patience was limited.
"Talk. We’ll talk." William Churchill was holding back his anger, his expression pained. "Let me think about it. Let me just think..."
’Once Wyatt Sterling calls the police, Kyle’s actions will inevitably lead to jail time—a sentence of up to three years is certain.’
’The boy has never suffered a day in his life; Scott has borne all the hardships alone. What’s a year or two in prison? It’s better than handing over the Churchill Family.’
’Kyle will understand, right?’
Having made up his mind, William Churchill decided to protect the Churchill Family’s empire and send Kyle in to be "reformed."
"I’ve made my decision." William Churchill pulled himself together and looked at Wyatt Sterling.
Wyatt Sterling put his phone away, as if he had expected this all along. "Decided to sell out the son you don’t care for?"
There wasn’t a trace of panic on William Churchill’s face at being seen through. He made his stance clear: "This partnership with the Sterlings is off the table. In any case, I will not hand over the Churchill Family to you."
Wyatt Sterling slowly stood up, his hands in his pockets, and asked with a half-smile, "Are you sure?"
William Churchill was resolute. "Yes."
Since it had come to this, there was nothing more to say. Wyatt Sterling didn’t try to persuade William Churchill further. He only said, "You’re from Washington. You should know how powerful the Washington media is."
William Churchill was completely baffled. "What do you mean?"
Wyatt Sterling: "Tomorrow, every media outlet in Washington will be running the headline: #ChurchillFamilyMarriageFraud#."
Churchill—Family—Marriage—Fraud!
The four words hit William Churchill like a club to the head.
Wyatt Sterling was very satisfied with William Churchill’s reaction. "You don’t want to protect Kyle, so don’t bother protecting Scott either. Starting tomorrow, the world will be flooded with reports about how your Churchill Family has a simple-minded son, Scott, and how you tried to trick the Sterlings into a marriage to reap the benefits."
Every word was like a knife twisting in William Churchill’s flesh.
His bellyful of rage finally dissolved into a pool of dead water.
It was only at this moment that William Churchill finally realized he could never win against Wyatt Sterling. The man was too terrifying, too frightening. He had calculated everything from the start. He hadn’t just uncovered the secret of the Oasis from before the New Year, he’d also discovered Scott’s existence, and he had even predicted that William would abandon Kyle today...
Though Scott was simple-minded, William loved him dearly. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have knelt and begged on the bridge that day.
"You win." William Churchill’s eyes were red with fury. "Wyatt Sterling, you win."
Wyatt Sterling reached out, placed a hand on William Churchill’s shoulder, and patted it heavily. "You’ve got guts. You just don’t give up until you’re staring into the abyss."
Downstairs.
Alice York hadn’t left yet. She had turned back and waited downstairs for a while, but when Wyatt Sterling didn’t come down, she decided to go look for him.
She had forgotten to ask him if he was returning to Silvanus today.
She was afraid that she would come back from seeing Zoe Jenson only to find out he had already left. It was better to know his plans than for him to just disappear without a word.
On her way, she ran into the butler and asked where Wyatt Sterling was. The butler told her Wyatt was in William Churchill’s study discussing matters and that she should wait a little longer.
Noticing the butler’s worried expression, Alice York verbally agreed to wait, but as soon as he was gone, she immediately went to find William Churchill’s study.
She passed by several doors until she heard voices coming from one of the rooms. Alice’s hearing was sharp. She stopped and leaned against the door to listen—
"Wyatt Sterling, you’ve orchestrated this huge game of chess, manipulated so many people... Even pushing Alice York to the forefront was part of your plan from the beginning, wasn’t it?"
William Churchill brought up Alice York because Kyle had mentioned to him the other day that Wyatt Sterling and Alice might have a sordid relationship.
Wyatt Sterling said flatly, "She was merely playing the role a pawn is meant to play." 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
William Churchill furrowed his brow. "You and her..."
"Me and her, what?" Wyatt Sterling let out a light laugh. "She’s just an adopted daughter. Is she even worthy?"
