Chapter 63: Chapter 63: She Knows Wyatt Sterling Cares for Her

"You’re thinking of having kids?"

Wyatt Sterling made it sound like a casual question.

But to Alice, it sounded more like he was testing her. If she harbored such thoughts, he would warn her. It was best if she didn’t.

So Alice chose an answer that would satisfy him. "No. I’m still young. I can afford to wait."

Wyatt leaned in, sat down, and closed the car door. "Are you implying that I’m old?"

Alice jolted and immediately shook her head. "No."

Wyatt Sterling scoffed lightly. "You’d better not be."

After returning to the Churchill estate, Alice learned from a servant that William Churchill had already brought Kyle back from the hospital.

And the man walking toward them right now was none other than Kyle Churchill.

The "normal" Kyle Churchill, that is.

His arm was in a cast, but otherwise, he looked no different than before. His mood, however, seemed excellent. He was practically glowing, looking like he’d been... thoroughly satisfied.

’Satisfied...’

The scene from this morning, when she’d pushed open Kyle’s bedroom door, flashed through Alice’s mind...

"Third Uncle, you’re back." Kyle approached, addressing Wyatt formally. He was always well-behaved in front of him.

Wyatt Sterling gave a perfunctory nod and asked, "That was quite a scare today. Have you recovered?"

Kyle’s answer was seamless. "I was scared to death. I really thought I was a goner. But it was a close call, and I was fine once I woke up."

Wyatt Sterling glanced at Kyle’s cast. "How’s your hand?"

"It’s doing great. I had them check it at the hospital before I was discharged today. They said it’s healing so well I might be able to get the cast off early." Kyle finished with a smile, looking completely at ease.

Noticing Alice was also there, Kyle didn’t forget to greet her. "Miss York, you’re back too."

Alice nodded.

Kyle remarked, "You and Third Uncle seem to be quite close, Miss York. The moment he arrives, he keeps you by his side."

Alice’s heart tightened, but her expression remained perfectly calm as she replied, "That’s because I’m well-behaved and sensible, the kind of person elders dote on. Or is it that you don’t get along well with your own uncles, Young Mr. Churchill?"

Kyle was speechless.

Alice smiled. "I get along quite well with all of my uncles. Isn’t that right, Third Uncle?"

She then turned to toss the question over to Wyatt Sterling.

A corner of Wyatt Sterling’s mouth lifted. "Mischievous."

Goosebumps broke out across Alice’s skin, but she forced a smile to provoke Kyle. "See? I’m just that likable. On the other hand, I’ve heard that you were quite the handful as a child, Young Mr. Churchill. Elders don’t usually care for naughty kids. Ah, well. I can certainly understand."

Kyle looked like he was about to grind his teeth to dust.

Knowing he couldn’t make a scene with Wyatt Sterling present, he quickly got down to business. "Third Uncle, you’re back just in time. My father has something to discuss with you."

Wyatt Sterling’s eyes darkened. "Where is he?"

"In the main hall."

Wyatt Sterling started to walk away. Alice knew they had business to discuss, so it wasn’t her place to follow. She turned to head back to her own quarters.

She had barely taken a step before Kyle blocked her path. "You were quite the smooth talker just now, Miss York. Why so quiet all of a sudden?"

Alice wasn’t flustered in the slightest. "Are you sure you want me to continue, Young Mr. Churchill?"

Kyle’s face darkened. "Don’t think you have someone to back you up just because Third Uncle is here today. Do you have any idea that you were..."

He cut himself off, swallowing the rest of his words.

Alice asked, "That I was what?"

Kyle looked away. "Nothing."

In truth, Alice had already guessed what Kyle was about to say. She didn’t hesitate to say it for him. "That I was given to your Churchill family? Is that it?"

Kyle stared at Alice in surprise. From his expression, she knew his next question. "Surprised that I know?"

Kyle felt like he was being led around by the nose. He sneered, "You would have found out sooner or later anyway."

Before Alice could say another word, he abruptly changed the subject. "Right, about the marks on your neck... I’m sorry about that. I lost control yesterday."

Alice scoffed. "Just lost control?"

Kyle turned to face her. "Everyone has bad days."

Alice retorted, "So when you have a bad day, you just try to kill someone to feel better?"

"It wasn’t as serious as murder. Unbelievable." Kyle looked utterly exasperated.

’Still, the bruises on her neck did look pretty alarming...’

Alice reminded him, "I was the one who went through it yesterday, so I know best. What you did could be defined as attempted murder."

Kyle couldn’t be bothered to argue. "Define it however you want. You’re fine now, aren’t you?"

’Alice was trembling with anger. Does it only count if I’m dead?’

’The ’foolish’ Kyle had no concept of human life, and this ’normal’ one in front of her cared for it even less. No wonder they’re from the same family.’

Arguing further would just infuriate her. Alice walked around Kyle to leave. After a few steps, Kyle’s voice drifted from behind her, low and menacing. "You and Third Uncle... aren’t you a little too close?"

Alice froze.

Kyle eyed her slender back. "Abnormally close, I’d say."

Alice’s fingers curled at her sides. She steadied herself and turned back to face him. "What do you mean, abnormal?"

Kyle crossed his arms, a cocky smirk on his face. "Last time. By the pond."

Alice’s face tightened.

Kyle continued, "It looked like you were scared by a fish and hid in Third Uncle’s embrace, but actually, he was the one who pulled you in. You think I didn’t see that?"

Alice’s expression remained unchanged. "Is that all?"

Kyle stepped closer. "And then there’s this time. You have an ’accident,’ and he just happens to show up in Washington? Is that really a coincidence? And where did the two of you go today? Somewhere you didn’t want to be seen?"

’Every word pressed on her last nerve. This feeling of having her secret spied on was absolutely awful.’ 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

But the worst was yet to come. He pointed rudely at her and said, "Alice, don’t tell me you and Third Uncle are..."

He never got the last word out. Alice slapped his hand away, her voice sharp. "Young Mr. Churchill!"

Kyle hissed. "What was that for? You hit hard."

He rubbed the back of his hand as he spoke. The sharp SMACK a moment ago showed that Alice hadn’t held back; it actually hurt.

Alice’s throat still hadn’t healed, and shouting "Young Mr. Churchill" just now had made it burn with pain.

She forced herself to endure it, raising her voice again, this time speaking with deliberate mystery. "Actually, there’s something else I know."

"You know something else?" Kyle shook his hand, refusing to fall for her bluff this time. "I think you’re just bluffing out of guilt!"

"No. The one with the guilty conscience should be you."

She was deliberately bluffing, so he decided to play along. "Alright then. What is it you know?"

Alice enunciated every word clearly. "I know... that Young Mr. Churchill doesn’t actually like women."

As soon as the words were out, Alice watched as Kyle’s expression slowly cracked, his shock morphing into fury.

The next instant, Kyle shoved her hard. She didn’t have time to dodge and stumbled backward, falling to the ground and scraping her palm.

Exposed and furious, Kyle pointed at Alice, who was still on the ground. "You fucking say one more goddamn word, and I’ll rip your mouth to shreds!"

"Rip whose mouth to shreds?"

Wyatt Sterling’s voice rang out.
