Adored by Him: My Blissful Days as the Girl Next Door-Chapter 422 - 421 Visiting to Express Thanks
The two silly kids came to see the patient and didn’t want to come empty-handed, so they bought an extra-large fruit basket, a bouquet of lilies, and a few exquisitely packaged gift boxes of nutritional supplements.
As a result, they bought too much stuff, which was too heavy. With their arms hooked around the bags and carrying the heavy large fruit basket together, they couldn’t hold the flowers, so they had to poke a hole in the fruit basket packaging and stick the flowers on top.
Walking from the hospital entrance to the ward door drew countless stares.
When Qu Chaozong and the others saw them, they laughed so hard, the old man couldn’t keep his mouth shut with joy, "Oh my, why did you buy so many things?"
Qu Chaozong helped to take the things over, and when he took down the bouquet, he laughed till tears sprouted from his eyes, "You’re so talented, how did you think of putting the flowers up there?"
Peng Hui felt embarrassed, her face turned red, as she wasn’t familiar with the people in the room and felt a bit distant. She didn’t know what to say for a moment.
Zhao Meimei, having always joked around with Qu Chaozong, turned her head immediately and complained, "Sis! My Brother Chao is making fun of me!"
Zhang Xin was delighted being addressed as ’sis’, she cooperatively turned her head to glare at Qu Chaozong, "That’s enough! Don’t bully our Meimei!"
Peng Hui sat next to them, watching the harmonious group, feeling a complex emotion welling up inside her.
Zhao Meimei stayed for a while with Peng Hui in the ward and then, seeing it was getting late, said goodbye and left.
Qu Chaozong asked Zhao Meimei, "How are you getting back? Shall I give you a ride?"
Zhao Meimei was about to speak when her phone rang. She smiled and said, "My brother is coming to pick me up, he should have arrived."
Peng Hui quickly said, "That’s perfect, I’ll go with you, we’re on the same route."
By "same route," Peng Hui meant accompanying Zhao Meimei down two flights of stairs.
Peng Hui held Zhao Meimei’s arm, "Meimei, thank you for today."
Zhao Meimei said, "No need to be polite with me, I won’t go to see your sister now, my brother is waiting downstairs for me."
Peng Hui nodded in agreement, "Go ahead, take it slow going downstairs, and be safe on the way."
Zhao Meimei agreed and rushed down the stairs, eager to see Shi Yang as soon as possible.
Peng Hui smiled as she watched her hurried back, then turned to go back into the ward to accompany her sister.
As she entered the ward, she happened to run into the family of the pregnant woman in the next bed, who was surprised and asked, "Hey? I just saw you in the lobby, how come you’re just coming up now?"
Peng Hui politely replied, "I went to see a friend."
The other person nodded, having just asked casually.
Peng Hui walked to her sister’s bedside and greeted her with a smile, "Sis!"
Peng Rui, seeing Peng Hui’s sweaty forehead, said with concern, "There’s a wet wipe in the drawer, take it out and wipe that sweat off your head."
Peng Hui smiled as she sat on the round stool and twisted around to search for a wet wipe.
Peng Rui asked, "Did you go to see Chaozi’s girlfriend’s grandfather just now?"
Peng Hui knew that the family next door must have told Peng Rui, so she didn’t hide it, "Yes, Meimei went with me. Brother Chao helped so much last night, I wanted to thank him."
Peng Rui nodded, "You should. But why did you stick flowers into the fruit basket?"
Peng Hui couldn’t help but laugh at that, "Don’t mention it, at the time I thought since we were going to express our thanks, it couldn’t be too shabby. But when choosing the fruit basket, I only thought about how it looked and didn’t consider the rest. Sis, you don’t know, Meimei and I both lost feeling in our arms carrying it into the elevator, and we really couldn’t hold the flowers, so had to stick them in the basket, after all, the money was spent, we couldn’t just throw them away."
Peng Rui also laughed along and asked Peng Hui, "Which floor is Chaozi’s family on? Didn’t they say they’d give you a ride back?"
Peng Hui, caught up in her story, replied without thinking, "Sixth floor, I left with Meimei, her brother came to pick her up."
Peng Rui nodded and didn’t press further.
Peng Hui said, "I need to text Meimei, I forgot to tell her earlier, Mengmeng wants her to bring a soundtrack CD."
Peng Rui asked, "Why didn’t Mengmeng ask Meimei herself?"
Peng Hui said while typing on her keyboard, "At the time, Meimei was calling Sister Xin to ask if she and Brother Chao were both there."
Peng Rui softly gave a response of acknowledgment, while staring blankly at the bedsheet.
Zhao Meimei felt her phone vibrate, took a quick glance, and adeptly began to reply to the text message.
Shi Yang glanced sideways and asked, "Is it Peng Hui?" 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
Zhao Meimei said, "Yes, she’s saying Mengmeng asked me to lend her the soundtrack CD, hey? Brother, where did you put that set of soundtrack CDs?"
Shi Yang, caught off guard by her question, took a moment to process it, "Which set?"
Zhao Meimei reminded him, "The set Mr. Zhang gave me before the winter vacation."
"Oh," Shi Yang recalled, "It’s in the drawer of the TV cabinet, I’ll get it for you later."
Zhao Meimei was reassured knowing the CDs were safe at home, sent a message to Peng Hui, and then complained to Shi Yang, "Brother, I might not get the scholarship again this time."
Shi Yang said, "If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. As long as you don’t fail your classes, that’s fine."
Zhao Meimei rolled her eyes, "Brother, aren’t your expectations for me too low?"
Shi Yang chuckled and said, "It’s not because your grades are bad that you won’t get the scholarship. I know you, isn’t it because you skipped an elective class during the time when Dad was in the hospital and got marked absent?"
Zhao Meimei nodded, "Exactly, because of that, my usual score got deducted, throwing off my total score. For the three main courses, Mr. Zhang directly filled in the usual scores for me, but for the elective class, the teacher isn’t from our department and Mr. Zhang doesn’t know him, so he couldn’t say anything."
Actually, Zhao Meimei was just whimsically complaining to Shi Yang, she wasn’t really concerned about the scholarship.
For the month before the final exams, Zhao Meimei rose at five every morning, taking her vocabulary book to the balcony, inhaling the cool morning breeze while memorizing words. After school each afternoon, she locked herself in the study, diligently practicing listening and reviewing key questions.
As exams neared, everyone was desperately cramming, Peng Hui constantly pored over Zhao Meimei’s class notes, blocking her ears alone, squeezing every second to memorize everything possible.
Peng Hui’s brain was almost oxygen-deprived from cramming, when she glanced over to see Zhao Meimei with her head below the desk, phone in hand, chatting with Shi Yang, saying nothing but: "Darling, I miss you."
Peng Hui reached out and touched a small part of Zhao Meimei’s lower back exposed from her bending posture.
Zhao Meimei glanced back at her, "Don’t touch randomly! If something breaks, you’re responsible!"
Peng Hui retorted, "Is it made of paper? Will it break with a touch?"
Zhao Meimei chuckled, exchanged a few more words with Shi Yang, then hung up the phone.
Peng Hui asked, "What were you laughing about while talking to your brother?"
Zhao Meimei straightened up, put her phone away, and whispered, "Tomorrow is May twentieth, my brother’s going with me to get the marriage certificate."
Peng Hui’s eyes widened suddenly, nearly letting out a scream, she coughed twice before repeating, "What did you say?"
