Chapter 51: Calm & Easy

Delphinia darted back and forth between the kitchen and table, carrying bowls and plates of freshly prepared food. She kept busy, though her focus seemed a bit off. Every few seconds, she would glance over her shoulder toward the living room, where Ashton sat with Julian and Goldie.

Julian leaned back on the couch, tossing a small toy back and forth with Ashton, his laugh filling the room. Goldie hung around their legs, his tail wagging like crazy. Delphinia bit her lip, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

She muttered under her breath, arranging the plates carefully. "Of all people, why did it have to be his brother..."

The memory of her earlier outburst replayed in her mind like a broken record. She had swung a shovel at him, convinced he was trying to kidnap Ashton. How could she have known? Evander hadn’t mentioned Julian’s visit at all. It wasn’t entirely her fault! Ashton hadn’t seemed comfortable being carried by him, and with no context, she’d only acted out of instinct. But still...

"Don’t worry," a deep voice said from behind her.

Delphinia jumped slightly and spun around to see Evander standing by the doorway, leaning casually against the frame with his arms crossed. His eyes lit up with humor, and he gave a crooked smile.

"Julian won’t kidnap Ashton," he teased.

Delphinia scowled, placing one hand on her hip. "Well, maybe if someone—oh, I don’t know—you had told me he was coming, none of this would’ve happened."

With a raised brow and a wider grin, Evander said, "Are you blaming me now?"

"I’m not blaming anyone," she shot back, though her tone betrayed her irritation. "But if you feel like I am, then that’s on you."

He let out a quiet laugh, stepping away from the door. "Point taken."

Delphinia huffed, turning her attention back to the table. She busied herself with adjusting the silverware, though everything was already perfectly in place. She felt Evander’s gaze linger on her, and for a brief moment, the room felt smaller.

Once the last dish was on the table, Delphinia stood back and exhaled. Her thoughts drifted to the earlier apology she’d made to Julian, her words stumbling over themselves as she tried to explain. But Julian had been nothing but understanding.

"Don’t worry about it," he had said, waving her off with a warm smile. "It just shows how much you care about Ashton. I’ll take it as a compliment."

She wasn’t expecting him to be so chill, but it made things easier. She had been certain he would be upset or, worse, dislike her for the misunderstanding. Instead, he had brushed it off like it was nothing.

Evander’s voice pulled her back to the present. "Dinner’s ready?"

Delphinia nodded. "Go call Julian and Ashton. Everything’s done."

Evander gave her a small nod and turned toward the living room. "Julian, Ashton, dinner’s ready!"

Julian appeared moments later, carrying Ashton on his shoulders. The little boy giggled, his small hands gripping Julian’s hair for balance. Goldie followed close, her tail wagging like a maniac.

"Finally!" Julian said, setting Ashton down before taking a seat at the table. His gaze shifted to the array of food, and he let out an impressed whistle. "Did you make all of this, Delphinia?"

Delphinia nodded, sitting down across from him. "Yes. I hope it’s to your liking."

Julian’s eyes widened slightly as he picked up his fork. "You’re kidding. Evander, you’re a lucky man. Not only does she take such good care of Ashton, but she can cook like this?"

Evander smirked, leaning back in his chair. "I know."

Delphinia blushed, a small smile tugging at her lips. She wasn’t used to receiving compliments from... well... anyone.

Julian took a bite of the roasted chicken and made a dramatic "Mmm" sound. "Oh, come on! This is too good. How am I supposed to eat anything else after this?"

Delphinia laughed softly, her shoulders relaxing. It felt good to hear such praise, especially after all the earlier drama.

As dinner went on, the conversation flowed easily. Julian was full of energy, often cracking jokes that made Ashton giggle and even drew a few laughs from Delphinia. She found herself warming up to him more than she had expected. From what Sienna had told her, Julian was still in university and would be graduating next year. He lived in an apartment near his campus but frequently visited his parents or came to see Evander and Ashton.

He was kind, funny, and had an easygoing nature that made him instantly likable. She couldn’t help but feel like Julian had a bit of Evander’s weirdness in him. Who else would react so casually to their brother suddenly remarrying someone they barely knew? It was either he was super chill or just as wild as Evander.

After dinner, they moved to the living room. Delphinia sat on the couch with Goldie resting her head on her lap, while Ashton curled up next to her, looking sleepy. Julian flopped into an armchair, talking excitedly about what he’d do after graduating.

"So, do you have a girlfriend?" Delphinia asked, genuinely curious.

Julian grinned. "I do, actually. We’ve been dating for about a year now."

"That’s wonderful," Delphinia said with a smile.

Julian leaned back, his expression turning thoughtful. "I want to start my own company after I graduate. Inspired by Dad and Evander, of course. But it’s going to be something different—something fresh."

Evander nodded approvingly. "Ambitious, as always."

Julian shrugged, a playful glint in his eye. "Well, I’ve got to keep up with you, big brother." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Everything felt calm and easy until Julian’s look got serious, and he leaned forward slightly, looking directly at Delphinia.

"So," he began, "when are you two going to have the reception? Or a party, at least?"

Delphinia froze, her eyes widening. She hadn’t expected that question, and the sudden shift in topic left her momentarily speechless. "A reception?" Delphinia echoed, her voice coming out quieter than she intended.

Julian nodded, a mischievous smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah. You know, something to celebrate the wedding. Invite family and friends. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but it’d be nice, don’t you think?"

Delphinia opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. She wasn’t sure how to answer that.
