Chapter 1696: Chapter 1696: Treating Senior Fox

Bai Ruozhu was startled at the sight; was this truly her Senior Fox whom she knew?

He looked as if he’d been fished out of a blood pool. His handsome face bore several deep cuts where the flesh had turned outwards. That was not all—his sleeves hung limply at his sides!

"Huilin, how are you?" Meng Liangshen rushed forward, his voice choking. He reached out to grab Xu Huilin’s arm, only to find his hand grasping at an empty sleeve.

Meng Liangshen slumped despondently onto the bed’s edge. "Who on earth did this!"

Suddenly, like a trapped beast, he roared in fury, appearing as if he would tear the room apart, while Bai Ruozhu and the others couldn’t help but shed tears.

"Master, please don’t be agitated; we must first find a way to save the Young Master," the steward implored with tears.

Meng Liangshen’s rage abruptly subsided; he seemed like a deflated balloon, his countenance despondent, wrinkles deepened, appearing suddenly years older.

Madam Meng, slow of foot, burst into the room only after Meng Liangshen realized he should have stopped her. But it was too late.

Madam Meng let out a howl and fell straight backward.

"Madam, Madam, you must hold on!" The nanny quickly supported her, but started crying herself.

How did the Young Master end up like this!

Bai Ruozhu hurried over to check on the old madam. Her mind was in turmoil, recalling her first encounter with Senior Fox. Both wore masks, and she mistook him for Jiang Yichun, later realizing they all belonged to the Ministry of Governance.

Although Senior Fox was Jiang Yichun’s mentor, he was younger than Jiang Yichun and not much older than Bai Ruozhu. In a modern context, he would be a carefree university student. But now he was in grave danger, both arms severed. What would become of him?

Bai Ruozhu’s mind was a chaotic mess, recalling the shared secret among them: the killing of Li Yi, who bore the imperial grace token. Though Li Yi came back to life as Prince Saihan of the Turkic tribe, the incident had strengthened their bond.

She also thought of Senior Fox’s affection for Tu Ying, though Tu Ying favored her second brother. These chaotic thoughts triggered an uncontrollable flow of tears.

He was a martial artist; without his arms, even surviving held little meaning. Would he want to linger on in such a debilitated state? Bai Ruozhu’s thoughts were gravely pessimistic, even losing the confidence to save Xu Huilin.

Madam Meng’s health was fair; she’d fainted from urgency but revived when Bai Ruozhu pinched her acupoint.

Rubbing her eyes, she hoped it was all just a dream. But upon seeing the bloodied figure on the bed, she knew it wasn’t.

Madam Meng opened her mouth, unable to speak, her tears already flowing uncontrollably. Bai Ruozhu wanted to console her but was met with the old lady’s murmured despair: "I cannot collapse, not at this time. This family needs me to stand firm; my eldest cannot be burdened with national affairs and family worries."

She mumbled, as if brainwashing herself, soon regaining composure despite her trembling hands; her gaze sharpened.

Bai Ruozhu sniffed; her foster grandmother was even stronger than she was. She couldn’t let herself falter. The priority was ensuring Senior Fox’s survival. As long as he lived, there was hope.

Senior Fox managed to escape while gravely injured, demonstrating his strong will to survive. Who was she to deem his survival meaningless?

"Let me save him!" Bai Ruozhu spoke firmly yet softly, stepping toward Xu Huilin. Meng Liangshen, dumbfounded, instinctively stepped aside for her.

"Send someone to prepare clean white gauze, bring a clean pot of boiled water, and ginseng soup—increase the ginseng’s age as much as possible!" Bai Ruozhu ordered quickly, and the steward noted her instructions before dispatching orders outside.

"Everyone else leave; godfather, stay and assist," Bai Ruozhu added.

The old madam hesitated before cooperating and stepping out, while Meng Liangshen composed himself somewhat. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel-com

"What should I do?" Meng Liangshen asked, his voice shaking.

Having served on the battlefield and governed the Northwest for many years, not much could intimidate him. But at this moment, he trembled fiercely.

"Strip off his clothes; the wounds need treatment. Excess blood loss could lead to shock," Bai Ruozhu said, pausing. "Have others add some braziers to maintain his body temperature."

"Alright, alright." Meng Liangshen disregarded societal norms concerning physical contact between the sexes and hastily followed Bai Ruozhu’s instructions.

As he stripped Xu Huilin’s clothes, he couldn’t help but cry. Whoever said men don’t cry simply hadn’t reached their breaking point.

Some garments had fused with the bloody wounds, requiring the dagger’s edge to sever them. Halfway through, he uncovered four or five deep gashes revealing the bone, not to mention numerous smaller injuries.

"In the past, he at least survived. But now, upon acknowledging his roots, he’s become like this; as his father, I’ve failed him," Meng Liangshen muttered, his hands trembling uncontrollably.

Bai Ruozhu clasped his hand, meeting his gaze. "I will perform surgery on him; you’re now my assistant; you must remain composed!"

The tears in Meng Liangshen’s eyes slowly faded. "Alright, I will calm down."

With deep breaths, Bai Ruozhu swiftly cut away Xu Huilin’s sleeves, exposing the severed arms. She stifled her tears and continued, removing the other sleeve to reveal the second wound.

Currently, Xu Huilin’s most severe injuries were the arm wounds; following them were those deep gashes showing bone. Even after treatment, monitoring his temperature at night was crucial.

Bai Ruozhu dared not ponder further; she could only do her utmost, taking one step at a time.

Rapidly, she worked with the needle to stop Xu Huilin’s bleeding. Soon, servants brought in hot water and white gauze, which she used to clean his wounds, secretly retrieving suture tools and catgut sutures from Space to begin stitching.

Midway through, she administered some ginseng soup to Xu Huilin. By the time the procedure concluded, it was dusk.

After applying the final disinfection, Bai Ruozhu staggered, briefly supported by Meng Liangshen to steady herself.

She grimaced, realizing her current physical state made such surgery a stretch.

Determined, she wrote a prescription and handed it to Meng Liangshen. "Godfather, have someone prepare the decoction. I’ll rest on the soft lounge for now; if he wakes up, rouse me immediately. Otherwise, wake me in two hours—no negligence allowed."

Noticing Meng Liangshen’s bloodstained lips, she realized he’d bitten through them.
