Chapter 1672: Chapter 1672: A Mother’s Heart Aches for Her Daughter

Jiang Yichun’s face showed a flash of panic, and the hand grasping Bai Ruozhu’s arm instantly let go.

Bai Ruozhu was still fuming and let out a cold snort, striding away. Jiang Yichun watched her back and opened his mouth, but eventually closed it again, his lips pressed tightly as if suppressing a great amount of anger.

Bai Ruozhu, still feeling indignant, went to the Female Physicians Institution to give some instructions and then left the palace to return home. As she arrived at the gate, she saw a crowd gathered at the main gate and heard the sound of a woman’s crying.

She frowned; what was going on now?

"My poor daughter, she bumped her head to prove her innocence, and even though she’s a bit dazed, she’s still obedient and well-behaved. Yet the Bai Family had her husband throw her out, what kind of justice is this? Everyone, please judge this!"

Madam Dou’s voice reached Bai Ruozhu’s ears, and Bai Ruozhu squinted her eyes. Madam Dou was quite bold, paying no heed even to the emperor’s words.

She got off the horse carriage and quickly walked over. Someone shouted, "The eldest lady of the Bai Family is here, make way, let’s see how she explains this."

Bai Ruozhu’s mood had been bad these days, all because of Jiang Yichun’s cold war with her, so upon hearing these words, her anger flared up.

What explanation did she need to give?

"Bai Ruozhu, it’s good you are here. You definitely don’t like my daughter and deliberately ordered my son-in-law not to take her away from the capital. Poor thing, newlywed and abandoned. Who knows how you tortured her!" Madam Dou cried out.

Bai Ruozhu glanced around, but surprisingly didn’t see Dou Ning’s shadow.

"Listen to your words; your daughter’s husband is a guard of the Bai Residence. Guards escorting the main household back home can’t drag along their families, wasting time, can they? And to clarify, no one forbade Muyu from bringing Dou Yun, but Muyu has his own duties and no time to babysit a fool along the way."

She spoke sharply, "Originally, Muyu didn’t want to marry your daughter, a woman who might play at hanging herself and lacks conduct. Who would dare marry such a person? Muyu’s misfortune is getting blamed for saving someone. If hardships weren’t enough, the duty can’t be properly done either."

"Isn’t it your Bai Family being cold-hearted? Knowing my daughter’s situation, couldn’t you not send Muyu on this duty? Do you really lack one guard? He could have stayed with her," Madam Dou said self-righteously.

Seeing Madam Dou speak so boldly, Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but laugh, "Your daughter clings to someone enough, yet you force him to give up his career to serve her? The Dou Family really has a big face! Besides, Dou Yun staying in the Bai Residence, wasn’t she cared for by servants? Our Bai Residence wouldn’t possibly maltreat a fool. For a man, the career is equally important, being clung to by your daughter ruins Muyu’s lifelong happiness, and you want his career and future ruined too by your Dou Family?"

"You’re talking nonsense! It’s just your Bai Family being harsh and not allowing Muyu to take my daughter there. With so many people returning home, how much effort is taking one more?" Madam Dou argued forcefully.

"Since you care for your daughter so much, take her home and care for her yourself. You mentioned our returning people are many; there’s always a chaos on such journeys. If someone accidentally goes missing, wouldn’t it be unclear again?" replied Bai Ruozhu.

At this moment, someone chipped in, saying, "Old lady, is your daughter really stupid? If she’s daft, she shouldn’t follow; it’s unsafe."

"Yeah, even common people may get lost, not to mention someone whose head isn’t clear. Besides, guards escort main households shouldn’t drag along families. Even officers wouldn’t necessarily take families when taking office," another person spoke fairly.

Madam Dou got anxious upon hearing this, crying, "Don’t listen to her slandering my daughter. How is my daughter silly? It’s just bumping her head making her react slower; it’ll improve gradually."

"Alright then, we can take her along, but if you really care for your daughter, aren’t you afraid we might abandon her midway?" Bai Ruozhu raised her eyebrow, suspecting Madam Dou’s intention wasn’t that simple.

"Of course, I don’t feel assured. A daughter should be cared for by her mother. Her situation is special; I’ll endure the hardship and travel along, taking care on the way. I’m a mother; how can I not care for her?" Madam Dou continued wiping tears, looking the part of a loving mother.

Bai Ruozhu almost burst into laughter, "What about your three sons? Don’t you care for them? As a mother, you shouldn’t favor one. Don’t dump all your family burdens onto our Bai Family either. Your daughter married our guard, not into our family; we have no obligation to support all of you."

"Listen to you, do you think our Dou Family would take advantage of you? I’ll just care for Dou Yun myself. Her major illness is just recovered; as her mother, I’ll prioritize her. The younger ones have their father. Once back in the capital later, I’ll care for them," Madam Dou explained with a comforting smile, "Luckily, my three sons are sensible, always telling me to take care of their sister."

At that moment, the onlookers fell silent, all staring at Bai Ruozhu to see how she’d decide. To say Dou Yun was dragging them down, but her mother was willing to come and care herself; could the Bai Family be that unkind?

Unfortunately, these people hadn’t thought Madam Dou wasn’t showing compassion for her daughter but was evidently unable to endure life’s hardships outside. Clinging shamelessly to the Bai Family under the guise of caring for Dou Yun for ease.

She remembered the banquet Bai Ruozhu arranged at Jiang Residence and the Bai Family’s wealth, eyes shining excitedly. Maybe even the Bai Family’s servants ate better than at the Jiang Residence.

Bai Ruozhu chuckled and said, "Alright, since you cherish your daughter so dearly, if I didn’t agree, it’d seem unkind. So, tomorrow morning, pack your bags and follow my parents home."

Madam Dou had been anticipating how Bai Ruozhu might make things difficult and how she’d feign pitiful, yet Bai Ruozhu agreed so simply that she felt a sense of danger, suspecting Bai Ruozhu had further plans for her.

She hesitated, distracted, while someone beside her reminded, "Old lady, why stand there stunned? Your daughter’s master family is merciful; you should quickly kneel in gratitude."

Madam Dou blushed instantly, realizing Dou Yun marrying Muyu equated to the Bai Family’s service, so she’d been lowered in status.

Bai Ruozhu laughed, raising a hand, "Forget about kneeling. Just don’t miss the time tomorrow."

"Good, good, certainly, certainly," Madam Dou responded excitedly, silently resolving to keep watch at the Bai Residence Gate before dawn tomorrow, ensuring Bai Ruozhu couldn’t find an excuse to leave her behind.
