A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 77: Kayla knows the truth
"Let’s get divorced."
Tolu froze. Had Mike really asked her for a divorce? It couldn’t be, right?
He would never say something as ridiculous as that. Or would he?
"I’m sorry. I didn’t get that. What do you mean? What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.
Mike’s gaze was cold and unwavering.
"You heard me, Tolu. Let’s get divorced," Mike repeated.
Tolu’s brows furrowed into a frown.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because I am sick and tired of this marriage. Let’s just... go our separate ways. You make me so exhausted and I don’t think I want to keep putting up with you," he deadpanned.
A bitter laugh slipped past Tolu’s lips.
"You’ve got to be kidding me. We are not going to get divorced, Mike. Whatever is eating at you can go to hell," she snapped.
Mike ran a hand through his hair, frustrated beyond belief.
"I am going to send the documents to you before the end of this week, Tolu. I do not want to hear any objections from you. You will sign it, and we will go our separate ways," he said firmly.
Tolu held his gaze for a long while before she spoke.
"Tell me the truth, Mike. Are you suggesting this divorce because you really don’t feel anything for me anymore, or because you’re nothing but a coward?" she sneered.
Mike’s jaw dropped open in surprise.
"Me? A coward?"
Tolu went on.
"Yes. I know you met with Curtis at work today. Don’t act surprised, I have eyes and ears everywhere. What did he tell you? What did he say to you?" she asked.
Mike ignored her. Tolu shrugged.
"Fine. That’s none of my business, I guess. But you are such a weakling and it disgusts me. Did he promise to compensate you with money if you break up with me? A car? A job promotion? Whatever it was that that man offered you, I knew you said yes. You sold me out, Mike. I am your wife and you sold me out!"
Mike shook his head at her outburst.
"You don’t know anything. Anything! I do not owe you an explanation though, so you are free to come up with whatever conclusions you like. That’s your bloody problem. That, however, is not why I am divorcing you."
Tolu raised her eyebrows at him and he went on.
"I am sick and tired of your bullshit ways. You’ve gone absolutely insane, and it’s high time I stop putting up with you. Leave me alone, Tolu. If you want to ruin your life, do it without dragging me down with you. You’re starting to turn into a dead weight," he snapped.
Tolu’s jaw dropped open. Hurt flashed through her eyes, and her chest tightened as Mike’s words floated in the air between them.
"I am a dead weight to you?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Mike’s expression didn’t change. He held her gaze, unwavering and firm.
"I’ll send the divorce papers to you as soon as I have them ready. Do not waste my time," he ordered and walked out of the kitchen.
Left alone, Tolu’s heart started to crack. Mike had referred to her as a burden. All she was doing, all that she has done, everything was for him.
He was the one who hated his wife so much that he had tried to destroy her womb and prevent her from not getting pregnant by feeding her a harmful tonic.
He was the one who had approached her first and asked them to work together to fight against her ex best friend.
He had also been the one who fell for her first, the one who made the first move sexually. Every single thing was because of him.
And now he suddenly wanted her to stop? Because he had grown cold feet and wanted to extricate himself from her?
That was totally unfair and insensitive of him.
But Tolu would not let him ditch her now. Not after everything she had done for him.
If Mike wanted to divorce her, he was going to have to do it over her dead body.

"I can’t believe you’ve been ignoring me all these while. That’s so unfair. If I hadn’t called you, I would not have known that you are sick and hospitalized. I thought we were friends, Lara. I don’t like what you did at all," Kayla said. There was a slight frown on her face.
Lara reached out to squeeze her friend’s hands.
"I am so sorry, babe. It’s just...things have been a whole lot. A lot of crazy things have happened and it’s just...I’m sorry. I am so sorry. I did not mean to zone you out," she apologised.
Kayla sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
"It’s fine. You’re okay now, and that’s all that matters." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
"Thank you," Lara smiled.
"You’re welcome. Now tell me everything. Who is this man you’re married to? You never did tell me anything, and before you ask how I know you’re married, it’s simple. There’s a big ass, ridiculously expensive ring on your finger. So you have no excuse. Spill the tea," Kayla ordered. There was a teasing lilt in her voice, and it made Lara smile.
A part of Lara was reluctant to say anything. She didn’t know how Kayla would respond if she found out that Curtis was the father of the kids growing in her belly.
Still she had to try. Kayla had been a good friend to her all these while, and Lara felt as though the woman deserved to know the truth.
"Okay so the thing is that, after the divorce with Mike, I decided to do an artificial insemination..."
And then she went ahead to tell her how the doctor had made a mistake and injected her with the wrong sperm instead.
Kayla listened attentively, and by the time Lara was done with her story, Kayla’s jaw was hanging open in surprise.
"Hold on. What you’re telling me right now is that you are married to Curtis Rodney? And you’re carrying his babies?"
Lara nodded. Before she could say anything else though, the hospital door opened and Curtis walked in.
Kayla gasped, and her eyes went wide.
